Hey, here’s and idea. Instead of putting the Velcro on the bottom of your Mac mini, what about putting it on the top where the Apple logo is. This way, you can easily reach the power button instead of having to un-peel the whole mac whenever you need to do a hard restart? In addition, this will allow more airflow around the base keeping the whole affair cooler. After all, if you’ve stuck it on the back of your monitor anyway, it not like anyones going to see it. 🙂
Yes, it'll feel faster for longer (longer before an upgrade is necessary). Having said that, if you're not using all the power on offer - I'd just go with the base M4 and save the cash.
The Mac Mini is so tempting, and I've always used PC's and have fought the urge to climb into the walled garden. I need to replace an older Windows 10 home theater PC and the Mac Mini looks like a great deal
Thank you for clarifying near the end that you’ve benchmarked the higher specced M4 Pro mini, as it’s another $300 jump in price over the base M4 Pro here, meaning an overall jump of $1500 from the base M4 mini to that spec.
I want to make sure I understand the charts. Are the M4Pro numbers compared to the M2 or the regular M4? That is, are the numbers indicating the say +25% in an M4 pro category indicating 25% improvement over the M4?
The base model will be an excellent app dev machine. Would bumping up the memory to 24/32Gb make it even better for iOS dev? Or is that just not necessary?
The base model will do everything you need to. Logic is incredibly efficient with the hardware, AU plugins, etc… and it doesn’t require any GPU. With the processing power in the M4 chip, and with 16gb of RAM, you’ll be able to throw as many plugins on as many tracks as you want without an issue. And if you want it to go even faster, then switch to Reaper 😜

Is there something wrong with the M2 Mac mini? It seems to have issues finishing or even running some of the tests. It'll replace my venerable and very long serving 2013 27" iMac as my main Mac desktop, so I expect to use it for about as long. As someone about to ditch their Intel 27" iMac in favour of the M4 MacMini, I wondered what monitor you would pair with it if saving money and not going for the Apple display?
I would give up on M4 mini and a third party 27" and get the 23.5" M4 iMac, there are some concerns over the display scaling with third party monitors, although they tell you you won't notice, but when you've been using a 5k Retina for over 7 years, I doubt it. You will also need a iPhone 13 or higher for a 12mp webcam, a keyboard and mouse and a good quality sound system. You won't get centre stage and you wont get a 6 speaker sound system. I also have an issue that the mini might get clogged up with dust and other muck from being sat on a desk
I just moved on from my late 2014 27" iMac. It still worked perfectly but no longer supported I don't do anything demanding so I got the base M4 but I upgraded to 512GB to give me a bit of headroom over what I had stored on the iMac. (£200 'ripoff'? - I don't care!) I got the Apple keyboard and Mouse because I want the touch ID and I have no problem with them, plus rechargeable, so simple! Finally I got a BENQ MA270U display, which is very easy to set up. I run it at 1440 and I can't tell the difference in text sharpness compared with the iMac's 5k retina. Video looked a bit softer but that's more to do with the matt screen vs the iMac's glossy screen. Used to it now. Zero regrets and I like that I have now separated the computer / display future upgrade path.
I bought the maxed out m4 Pro Mac Mini, but am having two (possibly related) issues. 1. Time Machine backups fail when I put the studio display to sleep; 2. FindMy fails to update location when studio display is asleep. I have the Time Machine drive connected to the USB-C port on the studio display, but have also tried it directly connected to the Mac Mini. No difference. I also tried High Power mode in case it was trying to sleep/power nap or something. I also have 'Prevent Automatic Sleeping When The Display is Off' turned on in the Energy settings. Any ideas on how to fix both issues? My old Intel iMac 27" which I upgraded from didn't have any of these issues.
My iMac 27" 5k does not show if it is asleep, it just gives the last known position - I presume this is because it needs to be o,n to show where it is, or if stolen moved to?
Given that placement of the Mac mini on the back of your monitor, are you not concerned about the heat that would be being pumped out directly onto the monitor?
There is a migration built in.. You just [lug them both in and click the application. It move everything just as your old one. Nothing will change. Just be sure you upgrade the OS to the newest version on your old one. As it will make you do it anyways before it starts.. And you don't have to go back and install all your passwords again for your accounts..
I am thinking hard about an upper spec mini pro. But that is priced up where the studio max is. Think I need to wait to see what the M4 Max studio prices are before I spend $2600 on a mini.
Do you have experience running an offline LLM on a Mac Mini M4 and M4 Pro? Does the Pro have significant advantages over the standard M4 for this use case (given the same amount of RAM and storage)?

Not an unusual term. Just means the amount of carbon emissions to make a thing is re-captured in some other fashion, e.g. planting equivalent trees to offset the impact.

I have one since last week and I'm still waiting for my cinema display because UPS fucked up. I had a beefy (for its time) Ryzen 3700x and RX5700XT build from 2019 and a now almost 9 years old Ultrawide LG monitor 3440 x1440 resolution. I used that PC during Covid a lot for gaming, but since the PS5 came out I realized that I rather want to game in the sofa with my OLED TV. Since then my build was just for some Office work, some torrents downloading and watching movies/UA-cam videos and for just that it used way too much electricity. So I've decided to go with this one, after leaving the Appple eco sytem for almost 15 years after I owned a mid 2007 Macbook Pro for several years. I do not regret it, even on my LG monito right now, can't wait for my Studio Display.
Activity monitor M4 Pro Mini 14/20 - 64GB - 4TB is showing 24GB used of 64GB, I'm just running 2 tab safari, Norton 360, multi video camera streams and mail. The concern of future SSD failure due to TBW usage was a concern, zero memory swapping being seen with this configuration makes me feel better 😄.
I’m super happy with my Mac mini M4 Pro. I got the binned version, and it runs like a dream. It’s way faster than my M1 MBP 14”. I wish it had a 1TB SSD, but it’s way too expensive, and it wasn’t an option from my retailer. I do graphic design, and one specific high-intensity graphic caused my InDesign to ‘beach-ball’ on my Mac. But that was the only time I was disappointed. Other than that, I’m really enjoying it. Used Apple AI to rewrite that... lol.
For the past few days, I have been contemplating a switch from Windows and it was the cost of a MacBook (no interest in an iMac) with good specs that was giving me pause since I also need to finally update my iPad ($$) at the same time. I currently run a nicer Windows gaming laptop (but I don't game much) that I bought mostly because of how easy it is to disconnect and lock away when I am away from home for an extended period of time. I rarely take it out of the house. Yet, in my consideration of all of this, I totally forgot about Mac Minis, even though I had one of the very first ones that came out many, many years ago. If you can satisfy your mobile use case with an iPad, a Mac Mini seems like the perfect solution and I could certainly still travel with it if I needed to with a portable monitor (which I carry anyway since my current laptop is only 13"). Finally, they are so much less expensive than a comparable MacBook.
Consider the compact size of M4 MacMini, I am planning to buy the top spec pro chip with 48 gb ram and 512 gb ssd. I believe this is going to be my travel companion for the next 10 years 😅 I have my 12” MacBook since 2017, and I seldomly shut down the laptop unless I forgot to plug in the power cable😂, so I don’t believe the power button would be an issue. Even though it is so slow and battery can now last a bit less than 5 hours, I still love to carry it around for travel. I tend to always go for the highest spec computer I can afford for the longevity, not sure if everyone else would consider the same😆
Glad you mention the fan noise: There is some pretty contradictory infos on the internet from "dead silent" to "sounds like a vacuum cleaner", especially for the m4pro version: I am doing a lot of sound design and need a silent machine, I edit in davinci and would need there also silence for normal tasks. I dont mind the vacuum cleaner while rendering though, any experience on that? should I better go with a silent m4 and then upgrade to the studio version when it comes out?
Regarding fan control in the Pro versus the base model: TG Pro is an excellent app that allows you to control the fan speed and monitor temps of all CPU and GPU cores and much more. It's such a useful tool for anyone who wants to monitor their system and have control over their cooling.
Don't worry about the power button placement, Apple wants you to put the Mac Mini into sleep mode instead of turning it off completely. And why not, it barely consumes any energy running let alone in sleep mode.

Even if he can't see it, he'll know that the Apple logo is obscured and he won't be able to sleep at night! Just kidding, good idea.
Yes, this ought to be a much better mounting position. Same with under desk mounting… put the top against the mounting surface.
I would agree, not to mention that the heat from the exhaust fan and the heat from the monitor could likely loosen the glue on the Velcro.
Noooo the value will cut by half if u do that
Appreciate the observations - I’m guessing if one wanted to “future proof” ones set up, then the M4 Pro would be the purchase over the base, correct?
Yes, it'll feel faster for longer (longer before an upgrade is necessary). Having said that, if you're not using all the power on offer - I'd just go with the base M4 and save the cash.
The Mac Mini is so tempting, and I've always used PC's and have fought the urge to climb into the walled garden. I need to replace an older Windows 10 home theater PC and the Mac Mini looks like a great deal
Do it!
I replaced my raspberry Pi 4 HTPC with the mac mini m4 pro.
3:54 it’s a power bottom hahahahahahja😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for clarifying near the end that you’ve benchmarked the higher specced M4 Pro mini, as it’s another $300 jump in price over the base M4 Pro here, meaning an overall jump of $1500 from the base M4 mini to that spec.
I want to make sure I understand the charts. Are the M4Pro numbers compared to the M2 or the regular M4? That is, are the numbers indicating the say +25% in an M4 pro category indicating 25% improvement over the M4?
Correct. Each % is relative to the model left of it on the chart
The base model will be an excellent app dev machine. Would bumping up the memory to 24/32Gb make it even better for iOS dev? Or is that just not necessary?
I’d love to know what you guys recommend for running Logic Pro??
The base model will do everything you need to. Logic is incredibly efficient with the hardware, AU plugins, etc… and it doesn’t require any GPU. With the processing power in the M4 chip, and with 16gb of RAM, you’ll be able to throw as many plugins on as many tracks as you want without an issue.
And if you want it to go even faster, then switch to Reaper 😜
I’m getting one ASAP!! I have the Mac Mini 2023, but it does not leave the desk. My Mac Book Mini goes with me on the road. I see the new 5”x5” Mac Mini going on cruises and vacations. I won’t be destroyed if something happens because it will be the cheapest to replace.
Is there something wrong with the M2 Mac mini? It seems to have issues finishing or even running some of the tests.
I'm going to be getting an M4 Pro with a bump to the RAM in the new year after the whole crazy expensive Christmas period has died down lol. It'll replace my venerable and very long serving 2013 27" iMac as my main Mac desktop, so I expect to use it for about as long. Even the base model would be a huge improvement but I want to get as long out of it as possible! I have my custom gaming PC if I need some heavier lifting or my M3 MacBook Pro for on tho go stuff.
Just ordered the base spec. Could be the best deal in tech at the moment.
Is that a new Ikea desk which has replaced your old karlby?
Not Ikea - it's a concrete one I found somewhere else (I forget). Karlby did me well for years, though!
I just changed from my m2 Mac mini to the m4 Mac mini. I use it with my Samsung 100 inch QLED smart tv wall mounted onto my bedroom wall and pair it with my Harman Kardon studio 3 Bluetooth speaker. I use it for watching movies and listening to music. I left it on 24 hours when I’m sleeping up to the next morning listening to music and it have no issues at all. Used to use Asus desktop but it gave me lots of software issues and so I’ve changed to Mac mini and all my problems solved!! Same goes to using iPhones. No more issues. Having lots of issues when I’m using android Samsung phones. That’s why I will always use apple products as they never give me any issues. Used to use Logitech keyboard and mouse too but always have some glitches and issues. But after changing to magic keyboard and mouse, there literally no more issues! So I stay to all Apple products!! They are simply awesome! But this is for my own point of views and my own personal preferences only cos I love Apple products very much though!!
Could you recommend which the best connection to my monitor? Via hdmi 2.1 or usb- c
I'm using Logic Pro with this (lots of AUs/virtual instrument tasks). Which one do you recommend? Base M4 or M4 pro?
Bought mine at 6pm Wednesday Started using it Wednesday Morning Wheny TITS-UP 4:30 Friday. Black Screen. Get White Apple with Progress Bag for 2 seconds on Boot then BLACK SCREEN. New I should have Never tuched APPLE since my used Apple II in 1983. Now Geek Squad wants to charge me to Look at it. I have till 16 Jan to just return it to Best Buy.
Very clean, well-organized, elegant video! Thanks!
My M4 with 512 and 32GB is on the way
I consider the same... But wouldn't it be too small with 512 GB of storage? I think that 1TB would be perfect but it gets a little bit pricey.
@ my current iMac has 512gb and 220gb free. I just have my apps and mac os on the internal ssd. Everything else is on a m2 ssd with 2tb and my 8tb NAS
I had same case, cpu is already Great, 512 is double the speed of 256. I dont need more. Only thning i can not upgrade is RAM. Tost of the time today pc/macs are limited by RAM and sed/hdd. Cpu is already has gigantic speeds.
Omg my Mini arrivrd yesterday , that little maschine is superb. I used LR PS and C1 at the same time and was about 8-10GB away from using swap. I love this Maschine and its so fast compared to my M1 iMac
Thanks for the info. Looking to jump in and make the change to Mac Like others wondering do I wait for an M4 Studio in Spring or go with a Mini Pro now. No requirement for gaming, 3D rendering or even serious video editing. Primary use will be Lightroom/Photoshop with large RAW/Tiff files.
PTS need fast speed of RAM on M4 pro 24gb or more to do Al generator stuffs
It still worked perfectly but no longer supported
I don't do anything demanding so I got the base M4 but I upgraded to 512GB to give me a bit of headroom over what I had stored on the iMac. (£200 'ripoff'? - I don't care!)
I got the Apple keyboard and Mouse because I want the touch ID and I have no problem with them, plus rechargeable, so simple!
The twelve south backpack is a better solution
It is all sponsored, so probably not.
It’s a power bottom? PAUSE no diddy 😂 4:04
I think slapping it on the back of the display is not a good idea. Most likely the adhesive will melt due to heat.
@@noelmirando end then - boom on the desk and this thing can dent any desk easy
What hub do you like to use?
OK, I’ll ask, did you have to wipe your hard drive on your iMac? How did you set this up? I would sure like to know.
I’m right there with you. Once I bum specs up that $1000+ begins waking me up from my impulsive buying.
Yh but the studio display is only 60hz it's horrible to work on while the mac mini m4 is screaming i can do 120hz😭
Do you have experience running an offline LLM on a Mac Mini M4 and M4 Pro? Does the Pro have significant advantages over the standard M4 for this use case (given the same amount of RAM and storage)?
I haven't tried much AI workloads yet
What chair are you using now?
Hi great info, love to know how you connect the Mac mini M4 basic to the IMac, I have an old iMac 2017 with the Intel 5 which, runs great however not upgradeable any longer, ne great to use the 27 inch screen , rather than junking it
Thank you
What can you do with 256GB? Why would that do for most people?
Because you can plug in an external SSD if you need more
I'll get a M4 Pro, no doubt!
Any recommendations for a monitor to pair this with around the £400 mark?
Is this M4 applicable to other non apple monitor products?
I thought the highest M4 Pro version was the 12c/16c model? Where did he get the 14/20 from?
2:54 gigabits per second, not gigabytes
I've noticed that every single tech UA-camr makes this mistake. Very odd.
I know - i put text on screen highlighting the mistake
@@Thetechchapno, your text on the screen IS the mistake
@@UKTonyMagillyeah, they have no clue what it means, and how it works, unfortunately. Or... they just are paid to make this mistake to mislead people. 120GB/s is the bandwidth of RAM in base M4.
Some compile benchmarks would be of great use for some of us! Thanks!
Should I buy a laptop or maybe the M4 Mac mini with an upgraded iPad to use when I am travelling?
for travelling always go with a laptop
How does one determin which Programs Use Single Core And witch use Multi Core? i.e. Davinci Resolve Studio.
M4 Base Model Mac Mini can do 4K 120hz right via HDMI 2.1?
If the monitor can support it..
yes. Got it at 120Hz on my 4k OLED.
It's an apple TV case...why not leave it black? :(
Do you reckon you could mount the Mac Studio to the back of the display with command strips? 🤔
Big NO
No, try the Twelve South backpack
I purchased the Mac mini 4 base version , the vocal short or voice dictation doesn’t work. Did you face a similar issue ?
At 7:20 how do you measure "points". All the other channels I looked at compare how long it took for them to render the scene while you are sharing points. I'm confused. Would appreciate if you explain.
Its funny how we've accepted the idea of Carbon Neutral like that actually makes sense haha. Dope computer though might snag myself one.
Not an unusual term. Just means the amount of carbon emissions to make a thing is re-captured in some other fashion, e.g. planting equivalent trees to offset the impact.
@ yea, that ain’t happening lmao 🤣
I need a monitor what do you recommend ?
Actually i would like to know how a middle model 512/24 compares to the base and high end M4
I still have Imac intel 4.2 GHz i7 with 48 GB and Mac Book Pro i7 16 GB, which only works when travelling.
I mainly use Adobe Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and switch to Powerpoint, Outlook, Internet etc. I have a lot of windows open at the same time.
I had tested mac mini m2 pro with 16GB RAM. Didn't convince me. Sent it back. And waited for m4.
Now wanted to switch to m4. But desktop with Studio Display. Can't wait any longer for Mac Studio. My iMac is slowly coming to its knees ;-)
Mac mini Base with 32 GB and 1 TB or Mac Mini m4 pro with 48 GB RAM. What is the recommendation? I will definitely go for 1 TB. Time Machine runs on external 4 GB and archive on 2 additional hard drives.
m4 mac mini base model costs around $900 with all the taxes here in my country, is it still worth in this price range or should i look for any other option?
Hi, I just want to know if it's good for After Effects. because I don't think you mentioned it. I have a Legion 5 82RB, 64 GB, 1 TB, i7 12th gen. Is it a good replacement for that?
What monitor would you recommend to pair with that mini in that $600 range? For photographer
Dell S27
What cable do you use to connect the Mac mini to the display or iMac ?
It’s an apple studio display so he’s using a thunderbolt 3/4 cable that is included with the display to output full 5k
great video, thanks!
Do you know if I can use mi Imac (2021 M1) as a screen with the M4 mac mini, as the 4.5K screen is amazing and working great, I don't want to buy a new screen?
Thanks, cheers
Does Finder still suck though?
Nope, same Finder.
Same finder. Yea, it kinda sucks
Need to replace 2011 iMac as need to run Bambu Studio software for 3D printer anyone know if this Mac mini would be up to the task..
Pretty sure it'd be fantastic
@ thanks put it on my Christmas list then..
Loving the power bottom analogy
just ordering - should i go for nano glass display?
Yes!
Great review, will be picking one up
I’m looking to get the base Mac Mini with 256GB storage. I already have a 2TB Nas storage and enough iCloud storage.
512 is twice master and future Proof for macOS itself
I’m super happy with my Mac mini M4 Pro. I got the binned version, and it runs like a dream. It’s way faster than my M1 MBP 14”. I wish it had a 1TB SSD, but it’s way too expensive, and it wasn’t an option from my retailer. I do graphic design, and one specific high-intensity graphic caused my InDesign to ‘beach-ball’ on my Mac. But that was the only time I was disappointed. Other than that, I’m really enjoying it.
Used Apple AI to rewrite that... lol.
No one is having an issue with the power button on the Mac Mini, except for some youtubers....
Facts, it’s probably just a thing they all say to keep the content going
MOst of the complaints come from Windows users who can't comprehend having a computer that doesn't need constant reboots.
I don’t understand what does the M2 studio making on Apple website with its price and being ran over by the M4s
Is it just me but isn't putting another heat generator, no matter how little, directly on your monitor, a bad idea? 👀
I press the power button every day lol
Can the mini hook up to two monitors
even more than 3, using sonnet tech usb hub
Hey! You gave me a great idea about how to hide my MBP while using as a desktop. Thanks!
Consider the compact size of M4 MacMini, I am planning to buy the top spec pro chip with 48 gb ram and 512 gb ssd. I believe this is going to be my travel companion for the next 10 years 😅
I have my 12” MacBook since 2017, and I seldomly shut down the laptop unless I forgot to plug in the power cable😂, so I don’t believe the power button would be an issue.
As far as I have seen the Pro only kicks on its fan during export/rendering for long periods of time
@@chidorirasenganz Thank you, so good to know!
idle it is silent.
If you put it under load (e.g. gaming), you'll hear the turbine spinning up.
I plan on buying a spec'd out M4 Pro mini and it will be cheaper than anything I have bought in the last 10 years.
i dont know why here in brazil the monitor costs more than an imac. its just ridiculous
how can i connect a samsung odyssey g9 to a mac mini m4 if i already have the display port taken, can i get the same resolution with the hdmi port
Yes..
Does it shut down every 4 hours for 20mins to prevent burn in?
@@pantelistsiolas580 Not that I seen.. It might do it if your outside in the heat.. As they do have thermal protection..
Twelve South Backpack is a better solution mate!
Ooh I haven't seen this before - that's great!
