    Thanks for checking this out. As an old fart (60 yo, I started out with electronics in the 1970s), I have quite mixed feelings with these devices. Remember the 1980s/1990s when we had these massive, well-built, calibrated, ultra-exact and ultra-expensive units from Fluke, HP, Keithley and others that nobody could afford? They couldn’t do too much but what they did was _perfect_. Now with the advent of microcontrollers, cheap parts and chinese clones we tend to get devices that seem ultra-functional but often have cluttered, unusable user interfaces, unsafe and questionable construction and are far from exact. But incredibly _cheap_. Hobbyists and sometimes even EE’s start to rely on what I’d often call real bad/faulty measurements.
    The old German saying "Wer misst, misst Mist!" (roughly: "Who measures, measures crap!") is more true than ever.
    I wonder how my lab will look like in the future. I still have (and buy) 30- to 40-year-old devices like old Fluke, Hitachi, HP/Agilent gear and try to fix them and keep them running but I somehow fear more and more will be replaced by these new el-cheapo (and el-imprecise) devices, since of course I don’t have endless funds. I always feel there’s kinda gap between "ultra-cheap, multi-functional" and "ultra-expensive, real good". Wish there was more gear in the "a little more expensive but okay-ish" range for those whose job moved on to a hobby and those who are just starting out.

      Back in the day 70’s & 80’s there was no way in hell I could afford any of that fancy test gear.... An old Simpson meter, massive Weller soldering iron, and a knock off Bird wattmeter was all I had..... Now in my 60’s I have loads of this old test gear that I could only once dream of... Tektronix scopes, Phillips scopes ( they were made in Holland) Hewlett-Packard signal generators and Multimeters once used by the military. Motorola service Monitors, Bird Wattmeters and still to this day my trusty old Simpson meter!!!! Sure, not as flashy or Bells and Whistley as today’s modern stuff..... BUT they were built to do a job, they were built to last, they sent us into space and to the moon.... Put together better than the finest watch costing 20 times as much... And are still around for people like me to use and enjoy..... Used pro industry standards gear or today’s bell and whistles knockoffs? Give me that Hewlett-Packard or Tektronix every time...

    The power supply board is the same one that's used in a million cheap DVD players and uses a viper switching chip. Nothing could go wrong with it and if it does just open your Speller DVD player and swap it out. It outputs 12, -12 and 5 volts at about 2 amps or thereabouts.

    I looked in your video library and I didn't see a video with this signal generator , hooked up to a 2 way radio..... I sure do miss my HP signal Jenny ... Will this unit go down to uV ?? Such as tuning the recieve on a Cobra 29 , 25 ETC ETC Injecting a signal of 1KHz with 30%modulation and RF output level of 1.0uV , I don't think the unit will go down that low , Like I said I miss my HP rf signal generator . I am looking at the Junctek 80 meg generator but I don't think that one goes down that far either... There is a lot I can do with it but I need to make sure before I dive headfirst into 150 dollars US and then needing to get another HP... I would like to see you tuning a radio with your Feeltech and see how much it can actually do with a CB ... Thanks again for a great video...

    I have just purchased the new FY6900 version of this. It's really not bad for the price. I don't find that buzz when using with a radio with modulation at all and 100% modulation only just a hint of over mod.
    My main moan about it is the SMPS. It radiates all over the place, almost impossible to use at low levels as the SMPS is picked up by almost everything on the bench, even when not connected to anything.
    I think the next project will be to replace the SMPS with a linear power supply. Just got to find out how too open it, sadly not a screw in sight, like yours.

  • @JAKOB1977

    Thx for the video and yep not a bad unit, just as long as you keep having the price in mind.
    Also got one, though its the newer model FY6900 60mhz and it is surprisingly packed with features for a unit that I could purchase from EU for a tad over 70USD. (74USD delivered)
    at 74USD for a 60mhz DDS AWG, the threes don't grow into the sky, but that goes without saying for such sums..
    gonna pimp it a tad, with a solid metal rotary knob, cost a few bucks.
    remember to turn it off, after use, the standby is pretty aggressive, at a few watts.
    The software works as a treat and connects without any bells and whistles, font not ideal, but make the interface way more manageable, and its more or less instant in reply..

    I think the amplitude issues were in the main your scope bandwidth -3dB down and incorrect termination. Be interesting to see the harmonic Distortion on the DDS generator output at various frequencies. It looks very useable to me. Is the display as bad in real life as it is on the video, looks like it should be back lit. I assume the transformer at the front of the PSU is actually a common mode choke. Oh just heard the DDS noise errrrrrr however not necessarily and issue for radio work. I have always found the most annoying thing about these cheap signal generators is actually the lack of screening and noise escaping from any port. I could find a place for that with all the features and low price point. Show us the FFT on your scope. Interesting review thanks. Best regards Chris

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  5 років тому

      The scope is rated for 100MHz, I actually went back into its settings to make sure I didn't have its bandwidth filter turned on, it wasn't. I think lack of termination could possibly be the cause of the rolloff, I will set the unit back up at some point to confirm if that was the issue or if it is really gradually dropping off above 20MHz.
      The display is small, readability is better in real life though, part of the issue is that I have so much lighting going on it tends to drown it out a bit.

    • @allthegearnoidea6752
      @allthegearnoidea6752 5 років тому

      The Defpom's Repair Channel That kind of surprises me, but interesting my 200mhz keysight also reads bang on at 200mhz. incorrect termination at lower frequency like 60mhz normal reads high as the signal generator has 50 ohms internal resistance and the dial is calibrated for 50 ohm load. Most signal generator don’t actually measure the output power as it’s difficult at high frequency and with very low signal levels. Out of interest what is the impedance on the Outputs on the signal generator meant to be. Nice test if you measured it.

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  5 років тому

      I just tested the output terminals, they are loaded with 600 Ohms, its output voltage does jump around when loaded with 50 Ohms, when set to 5V it is doing at most 2.8V pk-pk at 40MHz, at 60MHz it is only 1.4V pk-pk. I did find though that you can set it to do 20V below 20MHz (but only does about 5V pk-pk at 50 Ohms)

    • @allthegearnoidea6752
      @allthegearnoidea6752 5 років тому

      The Defpom's Repair Channel well that makes sense if it’s designed for 600 ohms. Obviously that’s still fine for most none rf application. I don’t hate it. It’s good for the price.

    I bought the same unit thru Amazon and channel #2 would only generate a sine wave. Channel #1 worked OK but no matter what I did, I couldn't get channel #2 to generate a square wave or any other wave besides sine. Also, it was DOA out of the box. After removing the cover, I could see the ribbon cable was undone from the display. Plugging it back in got it operational. I returned that one for a refund and bought another one which should arrive this week. Hopefully it works OK.
