I have worked in India, Middle East and now in Europe, I really wish if India can learn Europe work culture. Leaving from office on time is considered to be right and people don’t judge you on prioritizing work life balance..wake up and stop judging people based on the salary they earn, what package they hold.. the real sense of achievement is how peaceful you are and how good is the work life balance..
and that is the ONLY strength of these managers..Pit one person vs the other. A whole trillion dollar economy runs because population explosion of India. Lucky Indians Lucky the first world. Win win situation. Smart people have become billionaires thanks to the middle class educated english speaking population of India.
I previously worked at a top tech startup company in India. We were forced to work for 16 hours every day and even after reaching home at 1:00 AM we then have to colloborate with our colleagues for module integrations and complete the integration before the daily stand-up meeting next morning. This continued for several months during which a lot of employees started getting heart attacks, strokes, etc. A person in my neighbouring team had a heart attack after working for 72 hours straight. He died even before the ambulance arrived. A lot of us left the company after that. But I recently heard the same culture still prevails. Whom should we approach. There is no proper laws in India in this regard.
It's high time, the youth should. 1. Stop comparing yourself with others. 2. Understand materialistic showoffs like big car and big houses will only help financiers and won't bring happiness to you. 3. Don't chase after money, instead do what you love. 4. Don't work as if you are inevitable for the company. If you leave, the next one will take your seat. 5. Love yourself and enjoy being alone sometimes. 6. Be healthy. I took that hard call, resigned the 10x6 sales job which was taking a toll on my physical and mental health, to follow my passion. Yeah i am earning only 1/4th of what i am used to. But surprisingly, when you earn less, we will adapt to better living. No show-off, No comparison, No rat race. Just inner peace, calm, easy and healthy life.
I have a friend who used to work for EY but refused any and all promotions. She said it wasn't worth it. That becomes your life and the stress would kill her. She said all the perks being offered were not worth it. She left a year later. Smart woman!
India needs good labour unions. What's going on is modern day slavery, part of erstwhile colonialism. Europe has strong labour unions and people have a work life balance
I was wondering the same thing after moving to Canada where there are lots of unions. While I think they are not so useful in this part of the world because of stong labor laws. I feel countries in Asia can benefit from having well defined Employment Standards or Unions.
Europe and India are not same. You may compare India’s big 4 to Asia pac except Singapore. Developed economies would not open offices in India only to have comparable jobs/stress/salaries. PPP is important.
@@anuchugh31 PPP and stress has no relation. Not hiring adequate employees required to complete a particular project is the main reason for increased stress
That's what he is saying. She died in July, and there was no pressure from the management to reply sooner due to good work-life balance. They already got 1 evidence on their side.
I remember that it happened in Romania a few years ago. A young woman Raluca Stroescu, worked for Ernst&Young as an audit manager passed away at age 31 due overworking.
@rubbish9231 it's definitely an issue. Do you imagine how bad we students have to grind ourselves in order to meet deadlines, study, manage side hustles and maintain a good attendance ? Your comment is illogical.

In Japan, they call death by overwork as "Karoshi". Now, it has come to light that this does not only happen in Japan. It has gone international. Worker's rights should be protected by law.
@ronaldgosiengfiao9663 - I am Indian working in Japan. Japan has better work conditions. Like I get to be flexible in my time, I get mandated holidays national holidays and weekends, a lot of a lot of work benefits. In India I had none and I worked 12+ hours everyday even weekends and no overtime pay and bare minimum pay (peanuts). I would love working here life long and never again in India.

My brother is a CA and I have seen him work for 16-18 hours. He is losing health and peace.. It’s high time that govt of India should set strict guidelines against all these blood sucking companies. We need the govt to create a portal to investigate and submit their petitions for all IT employees..
I agree with you my uncle was in army he overwork too.. and I work as civil engineer.. we don't have holiday and even construction workers works almost 6 days per week... that too in extreme weather like hot days.. we cant stop the work else project will get delayed.. nor we have previlaged to work in AC office.. with good fat salary..

As a resident doctor, i am used to being overworked but up to a certain extent, its a little bit justified in my field since I'm saving lives but why is a CA being so overworked??? For the company's greed for money. Disgusting.
Sir overwork in all field is not justifiable. A typical CA and almost every other profession also have such commitment you currently have towards your field. Say No to OVER WORK sir
Strict labour laws are needed in India. Also people like Narayan Murthy should be given hard time for glorifying overtime and longer working hours. These kind of selfish people are murderers.
Labour laws are their but it's only on papers. Capitalist like Narayan Murthy will keep exploiting working class if working class keeps breeding more workers for the capitalist.
And we are saying there is unemployment increasing in India. If each employee started doing work only for 8-9 hours vacancies will increase. There is lots of job opportunities in India but companies don’t want to hire more employees. They want people who work 15-16 hours per day on less salary.
Exactly. Instead of hiring 2 people with a package of 4LPA each, they hire 1 for 6LPA. People get fascinated by money and these companies smartly cut their costs. Then even if they put double pressure on the employee, he thinks that they are offering such a high package so he continues to work at the cost of his health, family-time, sleep etc.
True! People should take a stand and demand normal 9-5 work hours. Companies need to understand that they should pay for experience/skill and not the time we spend sitting in front of computers.
this is US culture exported to India in the recent years and since Indians are willing to do whatever they are opening 2nd headquarters or offices there.
I agree. We work more than 90 hours a week in govt. hospitals where there are barely any resident rooms or washrooms for doctors. The hierarchy in the field is insane. We can’t even take one day sick leave without sending other doctor as replacement, which most of the times is not possible. So, we end up even working while we are sick and our leaves for the year lapse as we dont get a chance to use those. One resident is doing the work of at least three. The govt. saves money that way but our mental health is fucked up.
My daughter worked in an MNC company. Her work hours were from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. ( I.S.T.). After 10 p.m. the team leader used to come on video conference call and talked for hours together. Sometimes it goes up to 1 a.m. or 2 a.m. No break, no evening tea, and no dinner also. It takes her to a depressed mood. After my compulsion, she resigned from the job. She were relieved only after paying 3 months salary. Now she is happy. My suggestion is to those working in MNC companies, not to resort to such action. Inform your parents and take advice from them. My suggestion to Team leaders in India, not to harass your subordinates and from the team leaders working in foreign countries, how they behave.
In Hyderabad, primary school children go to school for 7 hours and in middle school they have to go to school on 2 Saturdays as well. Plus, tuitions. All the parents I know are completely fine with this. They think that it’s a way of making kids tough. In reality , our society is preparing the young to consider constant work and minimal rest, a normal way of life. When they grow up they will be ideal employees for Amazon, Google and Big 4.
Yes I agree and on Sundays all relatives drop in , so there’s no time to bond with our own kids. Saturday and Sunday should be mandatory off for everyone to rest and rewind
In India, overworking is glorified. If you are a housewife, you should be a superwoman who can multitask and work from dawn to midnight with a smile. Of course you won’t be contributing to the finances, so your needs are not important. If you are a working woman, you should go to office and work and then come home and work. You have money but then you are called proud, arrogant and what not. If you hire a maid, then you are not living up to the age-old standards of the motherly duties towards her home and kids. Same stands for men, if he doesn’t have a high-end car or a house worth crores, he is branded as a loser by his own family. What is wrong with us? Students are pressurized to get through NEET/JEE because so and so’s kid made it through and is in USA/UK/EUROPE now earning a lot of money and sending it back home to his parents and they around showing off their luxuries. How many more innocent people will lose their lives before this stops?
I am in IT sector for past 12 years...Something that I have learned...you should know how say No to your Boss when he gives unrealistic timelines...Even that means lower performance ratings...Otherwise you will struggle a lot...I have seen many guys leaving the company due to Bad Managers...In Early years of my career , in a company I was working...there it was culture that if you are leaving by 7 pm means it was very early...9pm and 10 pm was Normal..many ppl worked till 2 am or 3am. and then it was expected that you come to office by 10 am -11 am...Health and family are very important in life apart from ur work..we should remember that...
Well said. I think young employees are usually afraid of saying a No (sometimes also due to lack of experience), and management usually take advantage of this. As people gain experience and seniority, they learn how to deal with these issues smartly.
some people whove OCD cant sleep if their work is pending they feel extremely nervous, no matter they loose sleep they try to overwork, but new work keeps increasing and energy keeps decreasing even if they work without sleep ,telling from self experience.
In CA things are different 1. Articleship if you refuse they will simply ruin your career with a simple sign. 2. People join big4 audit to switch to FP&A, treasury roles in industry or F&A dept. In financial co. And if you leave before a yr, your career is indirectly over in the corporates

I am an Indian who worked in the middle east for over 12 years in the financial sector and initially had bosses from Europe and later from India. Working with European bosses was a great experience. Unfortunately when Indians came into the organization with their fancy degrees from IIMs and XLRI the culture changed drastically. I had a steadfast rule in my department that my team come on time and leave on time for which I was blacklisted by my bosses and denied due promotions and bonuses. I was stressed out and opted for early retirement and living a healthy and happy life now. .

I watched a very good young worker driven to a nervous breakdown by overworking on the job at a big company in the USA. Abuse of employees (in this case a general laborer) is a big problem in America too.
I used to work at EY at one time. They have a terrible culture and if you do not over work they will kick you out. Their expectation is that you are at their beck and call 24/7. Anything less than that is frowned upon and you will not get a good review. Just say NO to such companies.
That's true. I tell my colleagues that my sister is unwell and had to be rushed to emergency for fever. They didn't even care ask how was she. Horrible work culture here

My brother is a CA and work for KPMG. Since the beginning of his career , I see him working 14-16 hours every day and even goes to office on weekends to work. During Audit time, he doesn’t come home as the manager provides them a hotel to work day and night - he sleeps only 3-4 hours for 1-2 months continuously. Last year , he faced chest pain , severe headaches and exhaustion due to this, god saved him. There is always pressure as these companies keep less resources and one person does the work of 2-3 person. These corporates are only after making more and more profit on the verge of employees sweat and blood. This work culture for CA profession is almost in every company . Where one should go for work? Our labour department doesn’t take any action even after knowing all these and corporates can run away bribing them. I think only solution is social pressure on these companies and government.

Smart work is a euphemism for a$$ kissing, chamchagiri, taking credit for someone else's work and in this case burdening juniors with too much work all in the name of learning while some smart a$$ manager walks away with a bigger paycheck.
Working smart is popularized by Gurus who sell the dream of working few hours a day and a lot money. Also the people who work less have leverage either from years of hard work or they are born into a lucky situation, like wealthy or inheritance.
I can understand competition, zeal to prove oneself best, Toxic work culture, Inhumane work demands, and many other things corporates put in front of employees, but this new workforce should understand that nothing is more important than health and mental peace. You will be replaced at work, but not in your family, so just walk out from such places, and for sure, you will do something good.
Being an ex-Ey staff I have experienced how demanding and squeezing the work environment is. It’s a lot of learning and very very stressful environment. You reach home after midnight and again start very early in the morning next day during year end audits. One wants to prove his/her worth and earn a good reputation and hence people join Big 4s. They hire fresh graduates and pay is not compatible with the amount of hours spent working. Rest in peace Anna. Praying for her parents.
This is way to normal in big 4 not just in India everywhere. I felt the very same in India and even when I moved to Canada it was the same with big 4 or even a scale worse. Finally had to notch down and join a mid sized firm comparatively way better. Big 4 is as toxic as you get especially in early days when you are learning work. At times when stars like SRK and Narayanmurthy speaks rubbish about working 15-16 hours a day they don’t realize what shit they are saying and what standards they are setting.
I just went through this last year. Working under that manager was very difficult, but I kept my health on top and left that company. even after that one other team member also left his team. That was a really bad phase, I was suicidal at that point but I thank god that I left that company.
Work culture has become so demanding that people can't spend enough with their children , their aging parents, or even during the sickness of the dear ones
More than work pressure, toxic work culture is even more hard-hitting. I have suffered enough from dirty politics, favoritism, personal biases led appraisal systems and unethical practices domination. Working in this kind of environment requires a very strong and bold person with high Emotional quotient.
Work exploitation with a meagre salary should be taken heed off.....this is devastating....as nurses we too are overworked and underrated.....most die trying to save others. Nurse- patient ratio to render holistic, comprehensive care is never followed.
I was a software developer at a mid cap MNC. A 12-14 hour duty was normal at our office. They would schedule meetings even at 12 AM. I joined the company as a fresher and they didn't even give any proper training and just poured work on us. After a few months I left the company as for me work life balance was more imp than a handsome salary. I had heard from people that some employees of the company have experienced critical health issues due to workload. But after all this I don't understand y r we all ready to give up our lives for some money. If everyone deny to work beyond working hours, companies wont ask u to do so. They are putting pressure becoz there are employees who are ready to do this.
Similar situation in all corporates. I have also slogged for 14 yrs but now I have firmly drawn the line. If my boss says resign and go, I say plz terminate me and be prepared to dive in a legal soup.
Sorry for the loss of a young life, but work life balance is a joke globally; bosses are not trained to identify anxiety and mental stress but direct correlation is not easy to demonstrate or prove
Immediate managers know everything, but they don't have a say in this regard. The pressure comes from the top. It's the top C-level executives who bring the culture, not the lower-level managers.

Young professionals have to understand that we need to maintain work-life balance .. here life is your own .. employers can’t define what your life is … so I agree we need to set boundaries.. please learn to say No.. any work which is sent just at the end of the day .. is not to be finished on the same day.. if you will discuss the delivery timeline, superiors do reply back that you can do that work in the morning.. most of the time it’s a way to delegate the work, so that you have your task list ready for next day.. sometimes there might be something super urgent .. however if it’s daily, then it’s not
It is a very sad situation that most youngsters are caught in India. Getting gaslighted for prioritising health, lunch dinner time and sleep is considered almost a crime nowadays. Nothing can be achieved comprising one’s health. This situation should be highlighted in a big way and taken seriously by companies not to push people beyond human tolerance. That's the way to tackle. Big 4 is a hell hole when it comes to working hours.
India needs good labour unions. What's going on is modern day slavery, part of erstwhile colonialism. Europe has strong labour unions and people have a work life balance
Unions are counter productive. All you need is basic labour laws and strict enforcement of those laws.
I was wondering the same thing after moving to Canada where there are lots of unions. While I think they are not so useful in this part of the world because of stong labor laws. I feel countries in Asia can benefit from having well defined Employment Standards or Unions.
Lack of extensive Labor Laws and Unions in this industry. Infact some could disallow Unionization in the Employment Contracts

In India, overworking is glorified. If you are a housewife, you should be a superwoman who can multitask and work from dawn to midnight with a smile. Thank you for picking this story up. CA Students and employees are pretty shaken by this. Toxic work culture in CA firms is sadly too normalised. CA Articles and CAs at junior levels get the worst of it, especially in the big firms.
I sued my boss and got out
in 2022 my friend got a job in wipro..first they said salary is 5.5 lpa..after 6 months they said they will only pay 3.5 lpa..Bcz of job crisis these private companies demanding us to overwork for bare minimum salary..and these private companies have audcity to ask us if we can be able to overwrok or not??for just bare minimum salary..

They have said “only 4 months”, Torture of 4 months is not “only” 4 months, it is “a long 4 months of torture“.
This is an Extremely Sad story for the loss of this Woman
Sending this Woman’s Family My deepest Sympathy and Condolences, and My Thoughts and Prayers are with her Family.
CA in the big4s as well as in mediocre firms CA and articles are overworked no one is talking about it i dont know why
Actually just the prolonged sitting by itself can cause insulin resistance for just two weeks and this was a real study with completely healthy subjects. When you add to it the stress response, the lack of time to take care if yourself, yes I believe it can happen in four months. Very sad...valuable message from Palki as always
It requires 10-12 hours study per day to become a CA which is one of the most toughest course of the country.
And then even after becoming CA we have to work for long hours.
CA takes money for tax evasion.they are responsible for decreasing national income ..

@@Revati5070😂 yes
Working smart also not now a days whoever close to TL or else MD those peoples will get easily increament and promotion and also they will not fire 😂 it's reality of corporate
This is slavery .... Modern day slavery !!
India needs working hours restrictions for any kind of job
And job securities to be enhanced even in private sectors.

This overwork culture is also reason for low employment.instead of two employees at 30k they hire one for 40k for doing both their jobs.

Immediate managers know everything, but they don't have a say in this regard. The pressure comes from the top. It's the top C-level executives who bring the culture, not the lower-level managers.

I got so sick from overwork I had 4 doctors beg to quit my job. I was pulled off the train twice and carried to emergency room. So not worth it. I encourage everyone to refuse to work so hard. If you die they will replace you next day
Even with the private firms in the US, if you complain, you are out next day: Employment at will. That is what they say.
People who work in the corporate world will never speak out about this as the repercussions are...as we all know. Yes this is true in the work place , across my years I have personally known people who have passed away due to work exhaustion.
I felt the same at Amazon IT so what did I do I just simply moved out .
Life vs money. You have to decide, what is more important?
I completely get this.. I am currently taking a career break. I worked in telecom. They now expect sales and service assurance from the same person. They make the product unsaleable, no investment on research, cutting off service people, and not investing on channel pr. They expect managers to be magicians. I used to have regular nightmares. Would make Excel sheets and do reconciliations and follow up emails in my sleep 🤢🤢

It’s very sad that nobody cares.
This is the reason I had to leave my job at one of the Big 4s last year. They torture and gaslight sincere and hardworking employees. Some managers torture many young girls in these type of corporate companies. The top management may not be aware of it.
Well that's another angle. Except the family did not report it. This young lady had been in communication with her mom all the while, and her complaint was too much work and stress. Not abuse.

why Labour law is not implemented in India??
This is EY's response??? These big4 companies have no shame and all they have is overconfidence.
@firstpost I hope now you have better perspective of exploitation at individual level & why some employees prefer 'quiet quitting' instead.
All over the World, corporate work is the same: If you have stress or you think it's affecting your mental health, quit your job and go for a hike or just relax.
Govt. Of india should come up with new corporate and organisations bill limiting weekly work load or work hours
I've worked in a Big4, they ask employees to charge only 8/9 hours per day not the actual working hours which is usually 12+ hours.
A lot of people have been dropping dead in Japan from overwork. They even coined a new term for this; I think they call it 'karoshi'.
