You guys broke down this "conversation" between Prince and Dyson perfectly. I doubt very seriously that Prince would call his early work "devil music". Prince said he never regretted any songs he wrote throughout his career and referred to his songs as his children. It's funny how people say things about a person AFTER they've passed but never said it publicly while the person was living

I remember seeing Prince in an interview after he converted and he was saying how he couldn't make the type of music he once made when he was younger bc how can he go out and tell kids to go out and have sex. I took that as he had matured as an adult.

From my pov, it feels like Dyson going on a public platform and sharing this story, was essentially his, "I don't have a problem with the LGBTQ community, and look how I stood up for you. " I'm still trying to figure out why he'd be on drink champs and also he barely seemed to remember some of the base level things about Prince, but could recall that story, but then again I'm a fan.

Michael Eric Dyson has been suspect to me, for decades.
At one point he was known for being a "Tupac expertise".
He wrote a book about him, and was on a BET Round Table.
Suge Knight just so happened to be on the round table, with Michael.
Suge asked Michael, " how can you write a book about somebody
      you never even met"?
I thought to myself, "he's right".
Writing a book, with a slant, with propaganda in it.
But in the last 10 years Michael, has turned up
the dial, and show that he's nothing but a puppet.
So I'm not surprised with him & the lgbtq story.

Forget the stuff Dyson couldn’t remember & why he’s on Drink Champs. We all know it’s been said there was indeed some friction between Prince , Wendy & Lisa over this very topic, which is Ironic in every sense. We also know Prince did change A LOT once someone arrived on the scene with his bass guitar. Put a lot of crap in Prince’s head. Same “bass guitar “ we ain’t heard a peep from since Prince passed. 13:50 This is the critical point made, arrived to, that there needs to be a LARGER all encompassing discussion-conversation about 'stories' irregardless of whom discusses Prince encounters, work, run-ins, etc., especially POST-Prince death. 'Logically you'd have to say that about EVERY CONVERSATION ever said about Prince'. ABSOLUTELY. (I'm using ALL-CAPS as a form of visual keyword emphasis)
This isn't just about what Mr. Dyson relayed which I agree with BigSexy in terms of accuracy and possible changing, obscuring other elements of his claims, or his conversation, I beg to differ very much in his 'not necessarily' to this logical conclusion.
Think about it, Prince is NOT here to counter, put a stop, offer his recollection of that discussion, the context and time period even. The very SAME THING should be said about ANY and ALL stories, which should be approached with HIGH skepticism, from former managers, former associated artists, BAND members, not all but most, especially the more ahem... ambitious-payback kind... and even ENGINEERS and so called/self-professed "Prince SCHOLARS". You should question not only the motives but also the potential for revisionist retelling of, and even re-shaping of events and work. Question even incongruent supposedly factual data such as what song was recorded in what studio at said date even to whom songs were written for and about or compteley fictional.
In my view, it's so, so important, so critical not to just take what's said, even written, even if Prince's OWN WORDS were 'completed', POST his death. In writing that last bit, it hits me how crazy we're talking IN this period, but it is now a period.
Prince when he was alive said something about a lot of stories being said, written, that have become facts about songs, albums, work, his personal relationships, even perhaps his religious and political views that were either fabricated and or embellished, revised, rewritten, etc. and having clearly NO time to put any energy into clarifying them, but they know who they are. Something along those lines. Well, here we are. It's a constant discussion to be had now.

Yes, he should've kept this to himself because we all know certain groups can't be talked about with any hint of negativity otherwise it's game over. People keep saying Prince can't be cancelled - well a lot of his own fans don't even like him & only care about 5% of his music which is the only music the media focuses on so of course he can be cancelled. This is a fan base that's full of fanboys who like to hate on him. When do his fans ever have his back en masse? All those people he worked with - names we'd never know if not for him - when do they ever have his back?
Also wonder if this needed to be highlighted since no one else talking about it? Now that long winded hater pretending to be a fan on lipstick alley has taken it there, so that's more attention. Frustrating that people don't give the full facts like when they want to run with what Wendy said about comments he made but completely ignore the fact that both her & Lisa performed with him again after.

In an interview with Jay Leno, he said that his concerts (musicology at that time) were family shows.
I think he just changed as he got older, like we all do.
Also, he lost a baby in 1996, and that kind of thing has a profound impact on a person. It was after that time, and Mayte had a miscarriage also, that he went to JW religion. I think he was searching for answers - why did he lose a baby, and why couldn’t he have a family - so easy for some, and yet not easy for P. I’m sure he was looking for answers. Losing a baby is soul wrenching. It changed him obviously, as it changes anyone who goes through such emotional trauma.

This conversation isn't the first time the subject of Prince's later 'deliverance' and homophobia has been discussed, although it has mostly been swept under the rug. I disagree, it should be explored. Prince was personally responsible for an entire generation of men feeling comfortable expressing effeminacy and gender ambiguity then later had the gall to denounce homosexuals. Irony and hypocrisy.

    • @serendipitouscomet
      @serendipitouscomet Рік тому +2

That’s a pretty big misconception. A man being effeminate doesn’t at all equate to them being gay. Whenever someone sees a black man that’s anything other than super macho tough guy, that’s always the first assumption. Prince also isn’t responsible for how people feel about his music. You misinterpreted his music being about something it was not; because there were always religious undertones, even as far back as 1999.

  • @behavioristbusiness7372
    @behavioristbusiness7372 Рік тому +1

If this was after the conversion, it probably happened. But I imagine it was a much more nuanced conversation from Prince's point of view. Remember he told W and L if they wanted to work with him they would have to stop being lesbians. Thankfully, he relented on this stance and worked with them anyway.
But I think it is important to take a few things into consideration. Prince invited a preacher with strong pro-LGBTQ beliefs to his house to discuss matters. Think about that. Most religious homophobes just find other religious homophobes to hang with because there are plenty of them (or if they are inviting the dudes over for other reasons, they just avoid the subject.) I wonder if he was grappling with the issue and wanted to hear a well-informed counter opinion. Dyson gave him a beautiful description of God's love for everyone but it does not sound like he supported it with an interpretation of the scriptures...which might have led to their little argument. The scriptures unfortunately have anti-homosexual passages. I think Dyson told the later part of the story about Prince saying he is a good speaker but "can he dance: as a way to brag of course but maybe also as a way to state that Prince was indicating that Dyson's words didn't fall on deaf ears. there are a couple other stories like that--Bilial for instance talked about a conversation with P where he stated that Islam and Christianity had lots in common. He thought P was peeved because apparently he didn't say much (and Questlove later warned him against talking to P about religion). But flash forward to 2010, and Prince writes the song "Same Page, Different Book" which is about the very thing Bilial believed.
Prince was inconsistent about homosexuality and not just publicly. Of course, he had Wendy and LIsa working for him, there are rumors about Sheila as well. But he also had Earl Jones as his hairdresser who was gay and whom Prince apparently liked. One of his preferred photographers was Mike Ruiz (who once kissed his partner on stage when Prince invited him up there). Prince still worked with him later. he performed with Elton John. His Camille voice was based off a french transsexual from the early 19th century. He was all over the place. When he told Oprah, "whatever floats your boat" in reference to folks thinking he was gay because he said he thought he had two people inside of him and wasn't sure of the gender of one of them. The man just had duality. Not hypocrisy (because that would indicate a consistent view in one setting that contradicts another view in another setting) i suspect his mom was much more liberal than his religious father and this might have led to a confusion of beliefs. There are also theories about him being bipolar and even non-binary.
Back to Wendy, she stated after P died that P told her that her son with her wife could call him "Uncle Princey"... Talk about a different stance on the issue.

Could Prince be seen as a hypocrite? I don't recall Prince voicing in his music or anti-LGBTQ statements. I enjoyed Big Sexy's point of view; his words are similar to how I would articulate them. @@MrBKings I see "The Rainbow Children" as one of his most experimental albums. The title track is a nice jazzy flow; it has that swing that I like; the lyrics, in general, are nice but dives into JW doctrine. However, we can turn some of the lyrics around as a statement on the music industry. "Muse 2 The Pharaoh" seems like a jump into Egyptian mythology, "NATO spelled backward is ATON." When I listen to "Digital Garden," it plays in my mind as this dreamy landscape scene, this paradise of music freely expressed, but it has a sprinkling of JW doctrine. Still, I also see it as a metaphor for the music industry filled with lawyers and music executives looking to rob artists. "The Work Part 1" I take the duality for what it is, it takes work to have your freedom, but it is also JW doctrine about going door to door. I can go on and on about each track and enjoy that, but time is the limiting factor. lol When Prince cursed, it was because that is what he was feeling, and to me, if that is the emotion in that moment, go with it and let it flow. What would have been more interesting is if "Rainbow Children" was a commercial success such as Diamonds & Pearls, it would have been interesting to see a wider public reaction to it.

Thanks for sharing guys. Mr. Dyson never heard of him. But it was rude to say something like that about prince. We want receipts, who else over heard this? Prince said to Stephen that his earliest music "was where he was at the time". One thing we know about prince is he didn't apologize for his music. Prince told Chris that a song was about the devil, because in 83' you couldn't say the word "devil" on the radio. Sounds like the man wants some support from a group of people. He needs to be careful what he says, because they might make him prove his love to them. It could be taken out of context, starting a rumor. I know, he knows the name of the palace he was in, because he stumbled on reference several times and wanted to get it correct, like someone said the name. I agree that if Elvis or M.J. invented him over, he would know the name of their palace. Too bad he couldn't find another story to tell about prince instead. I think prince always believed that a love union is between a man and a woman. SO?? A lot of people think that way. He thinks prince thought he was smart? I'm sure prince figured it out. prince might of asked him why he supports LGBT?, because all the bibles he read has a man and woman together. Maybe he could of thought of a different story to tell, like what did you two eat together when you broke bread? Unless he has an agenda?

I also believe that Prince invited him to PP i can see Prince wanting to discuss that topic not because he was a homophobe but because of his (J W religion) not all religions believe or acknowledge the LGBTQ+community since Michael Dyson is affiliated with the church Prince simply wanted a better understanding or was curious to hear the pastor's view on the topic that's all. I'm not sure Prince referred his earlier music as the devil but, there is an interview with Morris Hayes saying Prince was ashamed of his early music he wanted Morris to remove all the swear words, thank god Morris didn't go through with it, because his earlier stuff made him who he was. That being said, there was no need to bring this up. That's how i can tell he's not a fan or even had respect for Prince you honestly think if Prince was his idol he would throw him under the bus like he did here. That's why he doesn't care to remember details.

Dyson is always looking for the chance to flex verbal theatrics. It has been tired for years. His religion is Democratic party talking points. Notice his words fall absolutely in line. He can author and quote Hip-Hop culture all day long and still nobody is checking for him. Maybe except the people who book him on CNN.

It’s just that we don’t want people disparaging him. It’s going to happen sooner or later, especially after that Netflix documentary comes out.
They’re going to have him as a homophobe and a groomer of young women. Watch and see.
We know isn’t the first time he’s been accused of being homophobic but people evolve.

Firstly he didn’t remember where he met up with Prince!!!🤔Most people remember where they went but often don’t remember what was specifically said. Secondly Prince may have said “I hear you defend gay people” but I doubt that he argued with Eric because Prince was always respectful towards LGBT. Also JW ain’t Conservative and they openly accept LGBT into their religion. Prince showed real respect to Ellen on her show and he welcomed Elton John onto stage at the O2 Arena in 2007. This definitely ain’t Conservative behaviour.Thirdly I doubt that Prince referred to his early music as the Devil’s music because he never spoke much about this, he lived in the present day and he also defended his early music and it’s sexual lyrics when he was in his late 40’s onwards. Prince went Kingdom Hall but was he ever really 💯 percent JW because I doubt that.

Art Full, that performance on Ellen was great. I loved it when Ellen and co. kept begging for another song and the fourth was "Bambi". Prince was too cool. And he did show her respect, asking her audience to clap for Ellen, when he was doing the work.

@@saa9099 Yes! was a fab show and Prince went out of his way for Ellen😄
I don’t believe this Eric Dyson. Prince wasn’t Conservative, he never held those kind of religious beliefs. Prince was always honest about his wild days, he admitted he was wild and he said “you don’t have to do that”. The only track I doubt he liked was “Dance with the devil” lol for Batman I think. JW is big in the UK. One of my colleagues at work is JW and he always says some of Prince’s music was too rude for him but he loves 1999 and Let’s Go Crazy. I guess Prince followed much of JW religion but I’m not sure if he believed all of it, he always made his own mind up.
