elegant! I first heard Mr. Peterson in 1960. I have loved his music eversince. What a treasure his talant was, and his recordings preserved for posterity.
Immenso RIP.
I myself am a guitar player, but my favorite jazz musician BY FAR is Oscar Peterson. For me, no guitar player or horn player can come close to his level of musicality.
It's not about the instrument, but the man playing it. Oscar Peterson was a genius in so many ways Luckily for us, music was one of those things. He wasn't a pianist at heart, but a musician. One of the goddamn best musicians this world has ever seen.
All of me was not written by John Legend! It was written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons in 1931. Oscar probably recorded this before John Legend was even born.
Yes i actually agree, there is this phenomenon among young pianists that they all try to emulate and sound like either evans or jarret, its so "hip" i guess. Sad because if more people had looked to the sky many more would have reached it, this being the sky of course.
I suppose it's partly because that's what they teach in jazz schools nowadays, and partly because - let's be honest - it's so much easier. It really doesn't take much technique or skill to sound like Jarrett and you get that tick of approval from your resident hipster "critic". Now playing like Wilson, Tatum, Peterson, Garner & co is another matter. There are no easy routes, no cheats, no "quick results". It needs lots of drill, drill and ever more drill - and that's just the technical part. But the real genius of these guys is not so much their speed and virtuosity, amazing as it is. It's their phenomenal musical culture, their genuine, profound, unfakeable understanding of Music, from Beethoven to Liszt to Joplin to country songs (and if Tatum lived today, he would listen to and assimilate rap and heavy metal too!), which makes their playing so meaningful. You give a tune to Jarrett or one of his wannabees, they would do some more or less arbitrary runs over it, their fans will count the number of rootless chords and modal changes and be happy. You give the same song to Oscar and he will take you on a journey, with a beginning, a middle and an end, with many twists, shocks and surprises, laughs and tears along the way.
Well spoken. Since i live in Norway ,the country where the term law of jante was invented, real virtuosoism is almost seen as something negative. I have had two piano teachers which follows the jarret/evans «pack» and they were/are so demotivating and theywere always picking on why i used so little pentatonic scales and conventional chord progressions failing to realize or acknowledge my playing and the genres i like, as i play more fusion jazz related stuff. I remember that both of them claimed that chick corea is overrated. The hypocrazy is obviously that they praise two of the most overrated pianists ever to emerge in jazz history.
Very true. I had a similar experience with a teacher once. These people are not worthy anyone's time. Not that there is anything wrong with enjoying the "cool jazz" styles - to each their own. The problem is the inherent sectarianism. Personally I certainly wouldn't call Bill Evans overrated. His contribution to jazz piano is huge and everlasting, but a real musician should study it, absorb it - and then play the way he likes. When listening to Tatum I can hear lots of Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson in it, yet he's not sheepishly copying them. There are lots of things he did that they didn't, and lots of stuff that they did that Tatum never did. Good music is not defined by how often one plays a pentatonic scale, for God's sake. Duke Ellington, who knew a thing or two about music, famously said that there were only two types of music: good and bad. To which someone responded that the way to distinguish them was easy: if you play something and someone enjoys it, that means it's good :) Having said that, I agree about Jarrett, in my opinion one of the most overrated pianists ever.
Per commentare la sua musica bisognerebbe usare superlativi che non esistono. Tecnica, pulizia, espressività, equilibrio, fantasia e sentimento da super genio. Ci manchi tanto, Oscar!
I can’t get enough of his music. Nobody, nobody, nobody plays like him
Brilliant! Nobody comes close!
Oh man! What a treat!
Saw him in Chicago after his stroke - still equally amazing. Oscar Peterson = artistry.
