In August 2023, the Symphony "Kūkai", jointly presented by the Beijing Thunderdrum Culture Media Co. and the China Philharmonic Orchestra, embarked on a tour in Lanzhou in China, followed by Kyoto and Tokyo in Japan. The performance received extensive coverage from Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily Online, Sohu, and Japanese television channels.
Kūkai, an eminent Buddhist monk during the Heian period in Japan, risked his life crossing the sea to study under Acharya Huiguo, who was the seventh patriarch of the Esoteric (Shingon) Buddhism of Tang China, and the imperial preceptor for three consecutive Chinese emperors. After returning to Japan, Kūkai spread the Esoteric Buddhism and widely benefited sentient beings, bringing advanced cultural, educational, and technological aspects from Tang China back to Japan. He is regarded as a founding figure of Japanese culture.
Supported by a sizable team, the tour spanned across two countries and three cities. The performance, which blended choir beautifully into the symphony, has vividly portrayed the magnificent life story of Kūkai, and marked the millennia-long cultural exchange between China and Japan.
