    FYI, since a lot of people comment on it: I purposely landed way long. The runway is 11,000 feet, and if you land on the numbers on runway 15 you'll be taxiing a half hour to parking. Also, if you look, there's a white rectangle painted within the runway, it's a "simulated" shorter runway that we use for practice. I pretty much landed on the numbers for that one, which is what I was aiming for. Thanks for watching!

      @@garystewart3110 initially I thought the same... but it’s a big ‘ole tarmac runway. The terminal appears to be at the end on the right. In which case he’s probably aiming half way down the runway to begin with otherwise it’s unnecessary engine time taxying. I learned on 650m grass strips so learned to use every inch of the runway. When landing on big, long tarmac runways have to consciously remind myself it’s not necessary to put it down 30m from the threshold :-)

    A prouder moment of my life was landing a piper just like this in a sudden extreme 45 to 60 crosswinds. Ailerons all the way to the stop. I was completely perpendicular to the runway looking through the side window. Nose into the wind about 200 ft off center. Heavy on the throttle. Then backed off the power letting the wind push me backwards over the runway kicking the rudder to bring the nose around at last second to touch down. I was busy. First time in that airplane. I only ever flew 152 cessna before that. There like a kite. The Piper 140 is a faster airplane. My instructor a ww2 pilot (J Basco) said, some people have to work for it, and some people are born with it. You were born with it. My head was 10ft big. But I know that sort of thing kills you in an airplane. And reality will punish over confidence. Life and losses took me away from it. But this vid reminds me of what a wonderful thing it was.. @@davidplatt4737 Thanks for asking. We didn't know what the recorded crosswinds were, until we tied down and got into the office. It was a complete weather anomaly that went way beyond anything predicted. No SIGMETs, CWAs, or on time AIRMETS to know. If we had to consider a go round or divert. I think we would have been in big trouble. And with the sun going down, fuel for range limitations, I'm glad it didn't happen. The storm and ever changing front engulfed most of our state, and surrounding eastern states running N to S 800mls. In our area there was severe hail damage, and mass power outages and other damage throughout the state. As I look back now I think, my God, we could have been in the air as the whole thing erupted to its max. Frankly, I thought for sure we were going to have to abort, but with the sun going down, I had an abnormal determination to fly it to the ground to get down. And inspite of everything being adverse, it was controllable. Albeit with a lot of throttle and rudder dancing. Timing, luck, and the grace of God I guess. I couldn't imagine ever being able to do that now.

    Low time pilot here (~120 hours in PA-28 140/160/180s). I get it was quite the crosswind, also looks to be a significant headwind (ground speed looks very slow compared to airspeed, although videos can be deceiving), but what’s the reason you didn’t cut power when the runway was made? I did all my flight training and still fly out of a 2000ftx40ft runway, so I don’t have the luxury of landing at 1000ft markers, much less way beyond them. I noticed you kept power in for a good 1500+ feet down the runway. May be due to the necessity of landing where I was trained, but if the runway is made can’t you just pull power, maintain airspeed until you need to flare, then land? I would have been in the hill and trees with that landing. I’m always looking to learn

    • @IslandSimPilot
      @IslandSimPilot 5 років тому +1

      Great question actually. It's a 12,000-foot runway, and Charlie and Delta (where the FBO and the pumps are) are probably 60% of the way down if not more. So I kept the power in a good 4-5k feet down the runway :) If you see that white box about the 1:35 mark, that's what I was aiming for. That's my "mini-runway" when landing on 15.

    Its nice when you have over 5000' of runway. Otherwise, you would have had to go around. I had less than 5000' of runway, and landed in a crab. Normally, for a cross wind, I add rudder for line up , just before touch down, but the wind gusts disrupted my timing. The Warrior jerked sideways as I touched down, and I taxied back, after just once around the pattern. Should have taken the hint before take off, when I had to hold short for six arriving aircraft at the uncontrolled field.

      Hey Dean! That's for the trim, which essentially maintains whatever pitch attitude you put the aircraft in. You establish the pitch (up or down angle) you want, then instead of having to physically hold it there, you adjust the trim so that the airplane just maintains that pitch. That's sort of a layman's explanation.

      I did purposely go a long way down the runway, it's 11,000 feet, and if you land at the numbers on runway 15 you'll be taxiing 20 minutes to parking. Also, if you look there's a white rectangle painted within the runway, it's a "simulated" shorter runway that we use for practice. I pretty much landed on the numbers for that one. But I appreciate the comment!

    • @IslandSimPilot

      My hangar at that time was completely down the other end. If you land on the numbers you taxi for 25 minutes :)

    Assuming this was a short final, looks like you went straight for the numbers without much of a final approach. Maybe you're like me, in that you want to get out of that wind and on the ground asap, so no sense in a long final approach as long as it's stable and you can line up in time.

    • @IslandSimPilot
      @IslandSimPilot 5 років тому

      Hey Rick, it's actually a bit unique - our runway (KRME) is almost 12,000 feet long, and our hangar is all the way at the other end. So often on my last lap of touch and go's I'll basically aim for a spot halfway down the runway. So it's really a normal approach, just to a different point on the runway. Thanks for watching!

      Upstate Flyer Hey that makes total sense. Kinda boring and unnecessary having to taxi 5k feet when you can just land closer to your aiming point. Thanks for the reply and great vid overall. Safe flying!

      @@rickkimball6125 Funny story: a couple weeks ago I was second to land behind a Mooney. He put it down on the numbers and got off on Bravo, which is about 1,500 feet down the runway (if that). I put it down 6,000 feet down the runway, off on Delta, and beat him to the ramp by about ten minutes. :) It's very unusual having a GA airport with such a long runway. We were a B-52 base back in the day. Safe flying to you as well!

      The runway is 11,000 feet long. I was aiming for the painted runway within the runway. You can see the white rectangular outline painted on the runway. So basically unless you want to taxi for 45 minutes, you land midway.

      Thanks Kevin. I was actually adding trim. And the runway is 11,000 feet long (KRME). You'll notice a white rectangle painted within the larger runway, that's what I landed on. It's a "simulated" smaller runway that we use for practice. But thanks for the positive feedback!

      one false move and u just give it full throttle, go around and try again :) also you make sure you can handle the winds BEFORE departure. if its to windy for you that day, just dont go fly.
      also pilots still take instructor lessons just for fun long after they got their license. pilots play their game very safe :)

      I found it a little annoying at first, but you get used to it. What's really irritating is just the fact that it's not in one particular place, like a trim wheel, you always know where that is. This you have to go searching for (as you see me doing in the video).
