    I had bloodwork done and my vitamin D level and B12 levels were VERY low. I was having the WORSE brain fog, dizziness, anxiety, and numness in brain so went out and just bought a B12 vitamin that's methylocabinal. Doctor, minutes after taking that 1 1000 MCG of B12 vitamin helped me feel SOO much better I can't even describe it. The anxiety was gone, the brain fog decreased, and i felt more alert. I am so thankful!

    Just a small thing I feel helped me is making sure your B-12 source is Methylcobalamin and not the others. It made me feel better in less then an hour. I was getting bright spots and felt light headed and had a sharp pain in my head. I feel so much better now. I use the sublingual and a spray just to be sure.

    Good job, Doc. I have watched several videos on this topic and yours was the best.l You covered all the bases, posted the necessary terms for outlining, and kept your delivery succinct. Hint: But if you spoke a little slower, it would aid note taking. I had to back up the video several times to jot down the main points. And thanks for the information!

    Why do the Doctors not warm you of this if you take proton inhibitors! I've been on them for years and was just recently diagnosed with B12 deficiency. So I'm thinking I may have been deficient for years?!

      Lori Lee because they want to keep you coming back. If they had told you, you probably wouldn't have taken the ppi's and possibly turned to a more natural approach. Then they wouldn't be able to treat your b12 deficiency down the road.

    I stop eating red meat since 1992 about five years ago my hair started falling out in patches, I was also prescribed Prilosec for a long time. If I start taking B12 and go back to eating meat again will that help? I have many of the symptoms, except for the neurological symptoms. None of the doctor that I visited ever mentioned b deficiencies. I am using a topical treatment for the hair loss with no improvement, and I am using an expensive ointment for adult acne, not much help. I am 65 years old and I find that doctors just put everything down to age. I just started the keto diet two months ago and notice some small changes in my hair loss, tiny hair growth. This is such an ahahaha moment for me.

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  5 років тому

      If you're not eating red meat and also are on proton pump inhibitors, supplementing with B12 is probably a good idea. Many things can be involved in hair loss. If you're eating a HEALTHY version of keto (which emphasizes good fats) that should lower inflammation in your body which may help with hair loss. Thyroid issues can affect hair loss. Too little protein or poor protein absorption may contribute to hair loss. With keto your protein is somewhat limited (but shouldn't be INsufficient if you're doing it right). Proton pump inhibitors may effect protein digestion. You may want to consider adding some digestive enzymes to help digest protein.

      Most would do best on a methylcobalamin or a methylocbalamin/adenosylcobalamin mix. Sublingual liquid or drops are preferred since they will be absorbed directly into the blood stream, not through the stomach. Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune attack on intrinsic factor, which is necessary for B12 to absorbed through the digestive tract. make sure there are no fillers or other additives containing any type of gluten

    Hi there Dr Brian.
    I was recently told that i have a b12 deficiency. After watching this video i come to think of the fact that i had ''Peptic ulcer'' (I think thats the termonology) a few years back, so i took medisins to reduce the production of acids in my stomach (somac/nexium). It has now gone 2-3 years since i've used any medication like that. will my bodys ability to absorb b12 improve?

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  7 років тому

      Sorry for the delay - vacation. If your stomach acid levels return to normal (no guarantee if you're on meds for an extended period of time), or if you take betaine HCl, your ability to absorb B12 from the diet may improve.

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  6 років тому +1

      Cannot say for sure however, B12 deficiency can have a significant effect on the brain and nervous system. B12 deficiency has been linked to anxiety. I would assume panic attacks and agoraphobia may have similar etiology to anxiety, although I'm sure there are other factors involved as well.

    Can high RDW and low MCV on my recent blood test be an indication of b12 or folic acid deficiency ? I have slightly low hemoglobin but I feel tired all the time , cold hands and feet , dizziness at times

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  5 років тому

      Sorry it took so long to reply - I didn't see your question. It's difficult to properly diagnose an anemia pattern off of just the information you gave, however, in general, a B12 or folate deficiency usually exhibits low MCV and a HIGH RDW. Low MCV and LOW RDW is often suggestive of early stage iron anemia, anemia of blood loss, anemia due to chronic disease or inflammation. I would recommend that you ask your doctor to run an expanded anemia profile to get to the bottom of the problem.

    Dr. smith, can I just take b12 supplements without knowing if I'm b12 deficient? I have all the symptoms but the hospitals and labs in our city don't have the lab test for b12. it's ridiculous, I know. It's stressing me more. My symptoms started when I was diagnosed with GERD and started taking PPI.

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  7 років тому +3

      Most people can take a B12 supplement with no problem, even without testing (testing isn't always that accurate anyway). B12 is a water soluble vitamin, and the body tends to eliminate excess levels of water soluble vitamins, unlike fat soluble vitamins which are stored and can possibly become toxic if levels become too high. If you take B12, pay attention to how you feel, and if you notice any negative side effects, discontinue it.

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  4 роки тому

      Definitely possible to cause swollen & sore tongue, not completely sure about lump in throat or burning mouth. B12 deficiency can contribute to neuropathy which can cause symptoms of burning, pain numbness or tingling.

  • @turboesther36
    @turboesther36 6 років тому +6

    Animals don't create their own B12, naturally it comes from bacteria in soil and water. Because of the sanitation level of drinking water, the bacteria that create B12 are no longer present in refined sources. Additionally both the crops fed to animals and people lack the B12 producing bacteria because chemicals added to the topsoil destroy the bacteria, and fruits and vegetables are also cleaned in a way that it kills the bacteria. It's now necessary to supplement B12 even in farm animals, so it's ridiculous to think meat is necessary for B12 when it can just be directly supplemented.

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  6 років тому +1

      Can you meet your requirements through supplementation? Yes. But meat is a source as well, and for those that eat meat, proper digestion is necessary to liberate and absorb the B12

    • @tickyul
      @tickyul 6 років тому

      Turbo Esther Ruminant-Animals do create adequate levels of B12, in-vivo, through the conversion of the dietary-cobalt. Nearly all B12 that occurs in the environment comes from fecal-contamination or decomposing flesh.

    Dr can vitamin b 12 help with sciatica and hairloss , and fat around my stomach i est very healthy but i store fat

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  6 років тому

      B12 helps with energy production in the body and is very important for the nervous system so it can help make your nerves healthier but I wouldn't say it's going to specifically help sciatic pain. There are SO many things involved in hair loss it's difficult to say if B12 would be helpful. Regarding fat burning - B12 is involved in energy production at the cellular level. If your cells aren't efficient at producing energy, it is difficult to burn fat, because the reason you burn fat is to produce energy. I often recommend B12 for weight loss patients' general health. That being said, I would not consider B12 to be a supplement that is a 'fat burner".

    • @DrBrianSmithDC
      @DrBrianSmithDC  6 років тому +1

      It's very possible. Deficiency in B12 and / or folate affect the maturation of red blood cells which in turn affects their size. There are several other things that can affect MCV beside b12 & folate as well. Also, a SLIGHTLY elevated MCV can be a normal variant.
