Its a Haldex system. It uses a clutch in the rear diff that is turned on electonically when awd is needed, sending power to the rear. The rest of the time it freewheels in fwd mode.
Astonishing stuff! Really! Was the endcap to adapt this system custom or is there a company that makes these things to be able to add a Haldex system to an existing FWD transmission?
I tried googling around and, unless I'm not searching the right keywords, I couldn't find anything.
You won't find anything online... I have designed the parts and made the system fit and work myself. It was an engineering challenge to say the least. I use a volvo AWD gearbox and have made the foreign Audi/VW AWD system fit that with custom parts.
Volvo T5 Golf oh wow! So the Volvo gearbox can handle all that power? I thought you were using an Audi transmission as well. My mistake!
Porsche Duésnburg. The volvo gearbox seems to be doing very well authough I did shred 3rd gear last time out. I have since rebuilt the box with a stronger 3rd gear which should be an improvement. Will soon find out. The volvo gearboxes are very strong.

Yes, the radiator has been In the back since 2010, It was in the front to begin with but I didn't like how hot the engine bay used to get plus it was very tight.

Scenario; if that were mid-rear mounted, with the stability control need to be recalibrated because what used to be the front wheels are now the rear and vice versa for the front wheels?

colleague did you cut the tunnel in the middle and whether it was factory synchronized will it become normal without synchronization to assemble without cutting the tunnel
Awesome build, lots of engineering to make that work. How are you controlling the haldex, aftermarket controller?
I don't know much about the mk3 body, but for a mk4 swap to awd they all say to get a TT floor pan and replace. From other comments, you custom modified the rear to make it fit. Do you have any build log of this? I am wanting to awd swap my Jetta but getting a TT quattro floor pan is next to impossible where I am from and would love to see your implementation of getting it to fit. cheers.

Hello, please can you tell me what rear anti roll bar setup you are using? I have converted my vr6 to 4motion, but still using the old Syncro rear anti roll bar, would like a setup like yours
KL Autos It's a custom bar I have designed and had made, the reason I wanted something other than the the original bar is because I hated how every other setup runs the exhaust under the antirollbar which makes the exhaust far too low to the ground and look rediculous from behind. Some even have to run more ride hight because of this which I wasn't prepared to do. I can have a bar made for you using my pattern that I still have in house. It would cost £450 then you need to fabricate some mounts. Handling is excellent, it's just right. Not too soft or stiff.

Did you need a 4motion floor pan? Or how did you fit the rear drive shaft in?
The propshaft? I modified the tunnel for it to fit where I wanted it to run.

Does this stilll have a cat or is that a resignator near the front of the exaust?
Russell Middleton, It's a very small resonator, actually half of a very small one seeing as I halved it in length to get it in. It's only there to take some of the pipe noise out. It doesn't make it any quieter but it does sound better. Also it stops the system droning at cruise which it used to do on the old exhaust without it.

Excelent build, the exhaust is 3.5" to the end with one silencer and one resonator? I am building something similar, but Audi 5 cylinder :).

Hello! Du you have a project page? Would like to know more about your rear radiator mount. Do you use the original waterpump? How you get air In and out? 😄 Have an rwd t5 project with rear mount rad self.
Hi, I use the original pump with a Craig Davies EWP 80 to boost the flow. The radiator sits in a cowling so it's separate to the cabin an sucks air in from behind the right side of the rear bumper, up into the cowling then is sucked down through the radiator and to the left so the warm air is not recycled.

On the back of the head is the radiator bypass for when the thermostat is shut. I don't run a thermostat so it's not needed. Also with the radiator in the back there is not much cooling without the fan running so you don't need a thermostat to keep the coolant temp above 80°c. You must blank the recirculation port if you don't run a thermostat or coolant will go round and round the bypass instead of around the radiator.
The main reason I removed the thermostat was so the system bleeds instantly rather than waiting for the thermostat to open. Coolant just goes round and round all the time which for a complex system like this I prefer. Less risk of an air pocket somewhere

The cost of parts wasnt too bad. Most parts are available cheap from a brakers yard. The labour cost would be collosal if you paid someone to do it though. The cost of this is man hours

What kinda back break kit do you on that golf?
It's Audi S3 Vented rears with custom caliper mounts on the syncro rear arms. Fronts are also S3 when I'm not running 15" drag tyres.

Is that a 2wd MK3 shell? Did you have to enlarge the transmission tunnel?
2wd yeh. The mk3 tunnel is quite large but a few places needed a little more space

Yes that's exactly what it is.

@@donjholio2894 both are volvo shafts. Yes you wont break that transfer box but you need the rear haldex diff to match.

The vw and volvo drive ratios are different so the full system has to match or it wouldn't work. Viscous couplings are ok but haldex is far superior. The viscous needs some front wheel slip to engage where haldex is a proper clutch and can be controlled. Any awd is going to be a huge improvement whatever system it is.

@@VolvoT5Golf okay I have seen people sale a kit to make it Haldex so you use a mk3 beam And the rest was off the s3 like the arms and wishbones ? Thank you for all your help
@@jordanaustin2932 You need a full syncro axle then graft the haldex into it with custom shafts as they are shorter

Hi what volvo t5 block is this?
It's a very late 2.3 RN Block out of a 2005 S60. The crank and piston/ rod ratio comes from the 850. The newer block has more meat at the Base of the bores and cools better than the 850 block. Mine also has a few other improvements with bore supports
