- In the first of a 2-part video series for History Hub to mark 1000 years since the Battle of Clontarf, historian Dr Elva Johnston (UCD) talks about Brian Boru, the battle in 1014, and how the story of the battle was shaped by Brian's descendants.
The video is funded by UCD School of History and Archives and is a Real Smart Media production for History Hub.

Part 2 of the video series - Commemorating Clontarf: 1014 through the Ages - is here historyhub.ie/c...
Why a movie has not been made on this great history/story, it has everything for a great script.
I am fasinated by Brian Boru since a boy.
Hollywood isn't full of smart or intellectually curious people. In this day and age they would just make Brian out to be a sexist/racist predator.
There will be a series made from this story for sure. Just give it some time ;)
There is potential to make a tv series about Boru given the success of Vikings and Game of Thrones.

High Kings would be a great name for series
Ok, bloody hell, I find too many parallels between Polish & Irish history.
In this case both Brian Boru "the Bold" (941-1014) and Bolesław I Chrobry "the Brave" (967-1025) are each others parallels.
Both among the greatest Kings in the history of either country, both Warrior kings, both badasses, both won themselves a crown.
Bolesław - first King of Poland, Brian - High King of Ireland. Damn :D
Polish history is awesome. Your involvement in the siege of Vienna inspired JRR Tolkien when writing the battle of pelennor fields in lord of the rings..
Europe owes Poland a debt . Only for their intervention we would have been overrun by muslims.....I will leave it at that . History has a habit of repeating itself though.
That’s right🩸👊🏻
@@conlaiarla same with the Frankish king Charles 'The Hammer' Martel who defeated the Spanish Muslims at the Battle of Tours.
I thought it was miezko of the Polan tribe that united Poland
Irish history is not looked at much and had the greatest warriors to ever live in earth if they made braveheart about William Wallace they have to make one about Brian boru or around that time I don't understand the Vikings one of the greatest warriors defeated by the Irish that would be a good film
💯 percent ,Exactly 🩸👊🏻Right on
I been saying this for about 4 years. Why the fuck is king Brian boru not more famous. We hear about king 🤴louie, king Richard, king Charles, king George, but nothing about king Brian boru. It seems like he was a genuine king. He really helped out alot. Only things that I hear that was negative of him was that he had several wives and when his people didn't listen to him he punished them severely.
Mostly because nobody can pronounce their names.
@James Furey Ad Hominid arguments are never valid.
we shud of let them help us instead of fighting
I’m proud to be descended from the Ui Neill who ruled over Ulster for centuries and held the Kingship of Tara. They also fought here
Hey dont forget your nabours who fought beside you 😂
My Grandma was a Kelliher, and the surname Kelliher was first found in County Clare (Irish: An Clár) located on the west coast of Ireland in the province of Munster, where they held a family seat from very ancient times. They "derive their sirname from Ceileachar, son of Donchuan, brother of Brian Borimhe [Boru], the 175th Monarch of Ireland.
@Maelmordha Uí Raghallaigh Awesome, I would love to go there to trace My Grandma’s side.
Dr Elva Johnston is an amazing source of information, and a great speaker.
2:25 sorry if you think it's silly, but I'm French, and not used to your pronunciation. my subtitles tell you speak of "email", am I correct in translating to Ui Neill?
Me too I’m French haha
Top notch! Remarkable that this Battle and Ireland's High King passed in 1001 years time just this weekend. God Bless Brian Boru and love sent to his MANY MANY Surviving Kin. sláinte mhaith! K.O'Brien
A lucid, understandable and illuminating account of the political circumstances of the time in Ireland.
Greetings to all my Brothers and Sisters
Clearly a historic landmark in history but I can't help thinking it also sowed the seeds of Ireland's misfortunes. It's clear that Brian Boru shook up the political landscape and rocked the boat, setting the scene for regional power struggles that followed among protagonists who would otherwise have been accepting of the High Kingship in the hands of the O'Neills, who were still the dominant clan. And it is that in-fighting between the Irish which left them more vulnerable to predatoryi incursions from abroad. I wonder how history might have unfolded if the Irish kings had all united behind the O'Neills before Henry VIII began to pull the carpet from under their feet.
Learned this fact from an old movie called Darby O’Gill and the little people. First time I ever heard of this king who drove out the dane.
As a Munster (Limerick) man, I'm proud of Brian Boru, the first true King of all Ireland.
👑👑👑 🇮🇪
I'm a descendant of Brian through his daughter who married the Viking Sitgrygg Olafson. I've been thinking about writing a screenplay about his life but it seems I've been beaten to it. lol. Have to think of another angle
Write it anyway!! Stay true to the material, present it to every filmmaker there is this story needs to be told
I went to school in Ireland from 2000-2014 and never learned about Brian Ború. Catholic schools were too focused on teaching us about Patrick and Brigid.
What school were you in? I did history for 6 years in secondary school and we hardly did anything on Patrick and brigid....
I remember we learned a little bit on him in Primary School in the late 80s.
@@mango2005 In the 1950s/60s We certain learned all about him. Perhaps because there was a pub next to the school call the Brian Boru (The Man's House for Men Only was its motto, i.e. no women allowed! Imagine that nowadays. there'd be a revolution).
My Grandma was a Kelliher, and the surname Kelliher was first found in County Clare (Irish: An Clár) located on the west coast of Ireland in the province of Munster, where they held a family seat from very ancient times. They "derive their sirname from Ceileachar, son of Donchuan, brother of Brian Borimhe [Boru], the 175th Monarch of Ireland, so Brian Boru could be my Ancestor.🤔
There is an ancient grave yard, in Co. ARMAGH, TOBEYHOLE , IT is off the Moy Road, I was at it once, very ancient, In that grave yard there is a stone slate slab of Rock lying flat on the ground and inscribed on that stone, is Brian Boru, It is roughly inscribed, The graveyard can be entered by a wee iron gate of an old country lane road. I saw this for myself, is this the true buriel place of Brian Boru, The old song, The Boys of the Country Armagh, states and buried in the heart of her bosom is the ashes of Brian Boru, This graveyard would lie in the heart of Co. ARMAGH. INTERESTING if someone else knows more about this. Greetings from Northern Ireland.
He's buried in clare where his from
One of our storytellers presented the tale of Clontarf live last night. If anybody is interested in giving a listen it is available at: ua-cam.com/video/-3lKXjrMz6k/v-deo.html
This historian needs a history lesson. This was clearly a battle between the Irish and the Norse powers (Vikings) the Norseman rule ended after the Irish victory at the battle of Clontarf. The fact Sitric could call on other Scandinavians for support demonstrates the clear ethnic distinction. Modern day attempts to promote political correctness should never be allowed to influence history. Just because the Vikings were based in Ireland and perhaps born here doesn't mean it was an internal struggle, it was a struggle against increased foreign occupation.
I think you overestimate the Danish powers in Ireland, the vikings never got further than founding small cities that were quite often burned down or forced to pay tribute to the gaelic rís. The rí of laigan mael mordha enlisted the help of the Dublin norse gaels in his revolt over brian
The vikings by this time were little more than mercenaries fighting for both dides
@@diarmaidgallagher8299 that's entirely my point. They were never considered to be Irish and the conflict between the Irish and the Norsemen/Vikings was never considered to be an internal conflict. The author of this video is trying to reconstruct Irish history according to his own feelings or agenda, not fact based.
Dr Elva Johnston - brilliant, erudite, enjoyable. If there's a movie, she's consultant for sure.
For sure. And great speaker as she regales the history here.
I am enjoying reading Ireland The Arising by Edward Rutherford learning so much history of the beautiful emerald island.
I was there when O'brien and Bashir battled this out on the holosuite.
Thats what brought me here 😆
I have a serious question for Dr. Elva Johnston: every account I've read of Máel Sechnaill suggests he was alive CC 845, was the one who drowned the Viking Sea King Throgest in the Loch Owel, and was the first High King of Ireland. Is this not true, or is this a different guy than the one in your flow-chart (+1022) 4:12 ?
That was mael sechnaill the first, this was his great great grandson
All my dad's side of the family are from clontarf. Beautiful town
Excellent video
Glad you liked it
It's 2020, and I'm still waiting on accurate subtitles. Sometimes the subtitles are so wrong, that it's ridiculous. I understand 90% of it, but occasionally there is a word here or there, where I'm lost on what is said because of the accent. I'm still not sure what Brian broke the monopoly of at 2:16, but I'm pretty sure that it had nothing to do with "email" like the subtitles tell me. IF so, Brian Boru invented email in 1014! A fact that is just as impressive as defeating the Vikings. Who knew?
All joking aside, Dr. Johnston has made me interested in reading up on more of early Irish history. The line she said that jumped out at me was that aristicratic women could have been married 3 or 4 times. That kinda blew me away, I always thought divorce was a modern thing. Yeah, I figured marrying your daughter off to the most up and coming member of nobility, was a one time bet, but not in Ireland. Your guy is either upwardly mobile, or he gets divorced for a guy with deeper pockets and more ambition. Haha, nothing is new, we just think it is.
@ 2.16 she mentions the Ui Neill... these were 2 clans and kingships that were in power in counties of Dublin(north)/Meath/West Meath/Louth/Monaghan/Cavan and inland to Roscommon (Southern Branch) and then the more powerful Northern Branch, which held all of Ulster. The Ulster Branch was still in power up until 1607 - this was effectively the end of ancient Celtic Irish Aristocracy, and the start and acceleration of the Plantation of Ireland by English+Scottish/Protestant settlers.
Hope that this helped.
@@stevendenny7260 Thank you so much! She said Ui Neill, not email. LOL Now it makes a LOT more sense. According to the subtitles, Brian Boru was heavily involved in a lot of email related things. haahahha I appreciate that Steven, I really do. Thanks.
@James F I had an issue with one term, one term only. I understood the rest of the video, all I missed was Ui Neill. I'm old and don't hear as well as when I was younger. And for that minor issue, you've crawled out from whatever rock you have been hiding under, to spew forth your vile insults and hate. Do you feel better now? I hope so.
@@stevendenny7260 Thank you again Steven, after being raked over the coals by the charming James F, I appreciate your reply even more. I hope you and your family are staying safe during this pandemic. Your answer not only told me the term I had trouble understanding, but even added in the historical context....something I really appreciated. Thank you for being a decent human being. Sometimes it seems the internet is full of James F's.
Its all here, the drama, the pathos, the incredible impact this period of time if not the battle itself....The High King Brian, his son Murchada, Gormlada, Sitric, Its the Gaelic Iliad when you think on it....And on Good Friday no less.....One of those who drowns in that tide is Brians grandson, Murchads son Toredelbach....
There is sooo much nuance here....Murchada himself, from whom the surname Murphy supposedly springs, kills in hand to hand combat several Viking champions before succumbing from loss of blood...Brodir in despair when the battle is lost cuts his way to Brians tent and slays him before being himself slain....One of those drowned is Murchadas son, Brians grandson...Just incredible...
There are Vikings fighting FOR Brian and Gaels fighting AGAINST him.....Brians daughter is married to Sitric !!!
There is a LOT here from which a beautiful tapestry could be woven....
AND, within a hundred tears the Vikings have become Christians...The impact on European, especially Irish history is immense..only the battle of Tara has as much significance....
Im amazed no one has done a movie or series on this period of time, though imho Ridley Scott could do this..He is to my mind, the cinematic heir to David Lean, in terms of Epic sprawl, so to speak
Sliante !
Areally good read if you are interested is a book called Lion of Ireland its by Morgan Llewellan
Erin go bragh
Johnny Cigarettes you suck
I like this woman. She has spent a lot of time in these Celtic/Gaelic studies
Your so inappropriate
Brian's early life is very interesting and only in Ireland could he rise from that to a Great Leader at that time in history
Listening to her description, with all the family squabbles behind it, this sounds like a Hatfields/McCoy fight writ large. I may have a connection, as the chief of the Kelley clan fell by Boru's side at the battle.
I would bet money they are related. King Fearghail/King Fraley. lol
My ancestor Sigurd the Stout, Jarl of Orkney, was killed by some paddies at the battle
daveyorko, he should have stayed home and minded his own business. And maybe he wasn't fit enough for battle being too "stout."
Great news
I wanted to be in Dublin for Good Friday 2014, but unfortunately couldn't... beside, little question, At the beginning, when you mention, and show the Book of Armagh, I notice the signature, because it's in red, but the letters are very strange, what style of writing was this?
That s why my son is named Brian - we have this irish blood but from Tahiti ! Nevemind ! No distance at all ! Love is your arm
I'm proud he's my ancestor :)
Hey, wait wait wait... Those interviews with the lady... At the beach... Why is the water not moving? Anyone else see that?
???
Odd. Did they not want her to be seen in whatever area she was in?
GOOFY LUCK that’s not water. It’s sand. Low tide.
Oh. Ha! Thank you.
GOOFY LUCK dope
theres no water fool its black sand after tide gone out
Well done . The conflicted and perhaps fickle gormlaigh.
I am a direct descendant of Brian Boru, feels good man

I hope you're no relation of that auld Diarmuid Mac Murchadha? The man who brang the Normans here in the first place lad?
@@antseanbheanbocht4993 Well, id love to be related to the High King Brians son, as we know thats where Murphy comes from...Him and his son Toirdelbach, Brians grandson died that day as you probably know...Unfortunately I dont know much about my own lineage because I was born out of wedlock and my father was born on a reservation....His father was a Murphy but his mum was Blackfoot..My own mum was raised in an orphanage by Irish nuns, so tracing my family tree has been more of a challenge than otherwise
Cheers
I have to admit that, while I utterly hate war and hate commemorations based on war, I still find this battle very inspiring. It's one of those battles where you really feel that there's one side that's actually evil and in the wrong, in this case Viking oppression of the Irish, and one side that is fighting for what's right, in this case freedom from conquering invaders. The reason why this battle in particular, though, is that it resonates a lot with Irish independence and freedom from British colonialism.
Did you even watch this video 😂
Quq Balam there were Vikings on both sides and Brian married his daughter off to sigtrygg silk beard.
Hail the O'Broin..🔥
To be fair, Sigurd the Stout(Jarl of the Orkneys who participated in and died at the battle of Clontarf) was forced to convert to Christianity by Olaf Tyggvasson at the end of the 10th century, along with all of his people. I'm sure many of the other Norse and Norse-Gael rulers in Ireland were forced to convert as well. And while they continued to be nominally Christian after Olaf's death for largely political purposes, that wasn't necessarily the case in private. After all, we know that Sigurd flew the raven banner in battle and on his ships, an overt symbol of Óðinn. All I'm saying is that the portrayal of Brian Boru as a Christian king fighting against the Pagans isn't completely ridiculous. Great video though. 👍
I need the song at the beginning. It is fantastic

I am doing research on my family, and I figured out I am a decendant of Murchad and Brian from my dad and my mom respectively. I thought that was cool and all until this video showed me that they are already related :/
So your parents are related?😂😂
I wouldn’t be too worried, genealogists now estimate that every Irish person is descended from Boru. Sort of like ghengis khan and Charlegmane. Unless it was super recent ancestry there’s nothing to fuss over.
@@kadenelijah9329 I wasn't really upset or anything, I just thought it was a weird coincidence. But if Boru is really that big then I guess that makes sense.
