Hey G. Great tips! MrHarborFreight here. I have the HF 12,000lb. winch and I also picked up this remote. It works great 4 me as well. I'm going 2 go w/ your advice & get a Duracell battery along with making a lanyard! Digging all your vids Bro. Have A Super Blessed Week!.....Gus (aka MrHarborFreight).
Thanks Gus! A better battery is working well for me. The lanyard is another great thing to use. With what I'm using the winch for, it's always right were I left it. I'm glad you like my channel. What do you think of your 12k winch? And what do you use it for if you don't mind me asking? Take care, G.
+ghostses, I actually use it identically as u do LOL! I winch logs onto my trailer for firewood processing. I've pulled fence posts out of the ground w/ the concrete attached. It works great for pulling Crete myrtle shrubbery and the likes. I also have a 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ so I use it for minor tasks in the woods. I really like it! I'm going 2 buy another one so I can leave one on my Jeep permanently. Have a great one G!..... Gus (aka MrHarborFreight)
TheWoodWerker Like minds think alike I guess...lol. Having another dedicated to your YJ would a nice thing to have. Plus you'd have a backup if something happened to one of them. I'm loving mine and it's taking tons of work out of the work. Take care Gus, G.
My remote control box keeps blowing fuses when I use the remote. Do you have a suggestion as what the problem could be? HF seams to think it's something in the winch control box. I also added a lanyard to my remote. I rigged a parabolic booster to the remote to extend it's range. Thanks for any suggestions you might have.
4x FORD I don't really know. I'm assuming you're using a HF winch as well. Did you exchange the wireless control for a new one- and the new one is doing the same thing? If not, I would start with an exchange. Past that, I guess there might be a problem in the control box on the winch- possibly how it's wired or a loose connection or two. For reference, my wireless unit has a 3amp 250V fuse in it. If it pops the fuses right away, it sounds like some sort of a short or the winch wiring is not matching up with how the wireless is wired. It might be as simple as loose connections in the winch controller. I looked at the wiring on mine so you can reference the wiring in your winch if you like. If you look at the end of the wireless plug you will see a large gap in-between two of the pins. I calling the pin to the right of the gap pin 1. The rest follow a clockwise direction. Pin 1 is output 1 Pin 2 is not used Pin 3 is output 2 Pins 1 and 3 control the direction of the winch. Pin 4 goes to ground Pin 5 is the 12v that feeds the controller. You can verify these line up with the control box on the winch. If not, you can try to make the wiring between the two match. Hard to explain, but hope this helps, G.
Hey G! Extremely thorough review of the winch and this remote. Did watch the whole long one...whew...but actually learned some stuff about winches and liked some of the pulls you did, Thanks! That 4x4 was pretty impressive. Haven't used them much except for pulling quads out of some tough places, but have been considering a baby one for lifting my sons pontoon fishing boat into the rafters and using a slide rail to move it to the side. Interesting design challenges in that project. I downloaded the manual for the HFT baby and was surprised at the current draw...yours must be horrendous. Is that a second group 27 in your truck? The dual terminals are a nice bonus for this kind of add on. Thought I might be able to run it from a big wall wart but that's not happening, even with some compound pulley arrangements and the duty cycle kind of sucks for a light but long pull. Have to rethink this to some other arrangement. Thanks for Sharing and the great video as usual! ~PJ
Yeah, it was really long for sure. They do sell several electric hoists of varying capacities that might work for your project- anywhere from 440-2000lbs. Being able to plug them in would simplify things somewhat. You might check them out. My winch supposedly draws 300 amps at 12k. I looked up the specs on a comparable Warn and it was closer to 400! I've used it all day for a few days and never hit the duty cycle on with my use, even with re-spooling the entire 65' of cable. I don't know what a second group 27 is? Take care, G.
***** Your battery looks like a 27F...its the battery group number for trucks and big cars/motor homes typically. Was just wondering if you have dual batteries in it to support that big draw and not hurt the alternator (50A?). Ultimately the 120VAC Hoist style would be the right thing on this project but choked on some of the pricing, And the HFT ones seem a bit fast to me. We bounced around the idea of the 12v ones because then he could put it in the truck and pull the boat up then remount it on the wall when he got home and pull it up. The boat with motor and battery and all the gear is about 350-400lbs but need to distribute that with a bar or 2 and 4 points to keep it level and balanced but pull it up enough to get close to the trolly & clear the cars...so I would like to use a 800-1klb for a comfort factor. Hemingway thanks for all the great tips & info on winching...really great G! ~PJ
pjsalchemy I see. To be honest with you I don't know. When I replaced it several years ago, I told them what model I had and that I wanted one with the most CCA they could offer me. No, I don't have dual batteries. I leave the truck idling while using it to help with the draw. I'm only doing short pulls so I've not had any problems yet. The alt is a new replacement but I don't know it's output. 50 is probably about right. By guessing, I've probably only drawn a couple hundred max so far in short bursts. I know I've not pulled 12k with the winch since I've not yet used it on the 1st layer or snatched back to the truck to gain a 2:1 advantage. I should stick a probe on it to get an idea, but I don't have time for play right now...lol. Dual purpose with a winch makes sense. Figuring out a power supply would be a problem like you've noted. Maybe a deep cycle battery could be the ticket but it would need to be charged frequently plus at an additional cost. I looked at the specs on a couple of their hoists and see what you mean. The single line speeds on them fly for sure. Even at double line they're still moving a fair clip. Slow and steady would be what I would want as well. G.
Thanks Jason. The connector matched the HF winch, so it didn't occur to me to show it in any detail. I don't know if it's a common connector that may apply to other brands. Take care, G.
It will work fine for 3-6 months, then get a new one. You can change the batteries, and still won't work after that time frame. Mine was kept in the truck when not in my hand. Keep the original controls. You gonna need it
if you know you wont use it for a while, take the battery out of remote, store remote and wireless module in safe dry padded place when not in use. Mine has lasted 6 years following these suggestions. ALL electronics are delicate, especially cheap chinese made electronics. They are not waterproof. i dont even leave the winch on vehicle, i have receiver mount for mine. Again, 6 years so far with periods of heavy use (summer time as an offroader) and light use (winter use, usually only on bike trailer or car hauler). No complaints so far. I define heavy use as 5 times a week @500' or more of cable in and out. I define light use as 1 use every other week. I have never gone more than a month of non use.
Adding wire to the antenna will not make your range further. The wire is cut to length to match the frequency/wavelength that it receives on. The best way to get more range is to make sure the antenna is as straight (up or down) as possible, and not near any metal.
Jared, here's a link to a site that shows the connector. Hope this helps, G. www.overlandbound.com/forums/threads/mod-harbor-freight-wireless-winch-remote-on-a-warn-m8000.1235/
That's a tough question. Unless the control wiring on the winch is low voltage (12vdc I believe) and is used to close a contactor- it would say no. If so, one might be able to be wired in and made to work. I don't know much about ac powered winches/hoists but I would imagine they would be using line voltage for the motor control. Even with line voltage control it might be possible, but it would require a power transformer, proper contactor, and of course housing the components and wiring it up. Take care, G.
Mine is not working either, mine doesnt have green wire, brand new, exchanged it still doesnt work, winch is practically brand new also, you ever get it fixed?
Hmm I'm just finding that out also.Winch is practically brand new, bought the remote, didnt work, exchanged it and it still didnt work.Doesnt make sense, same pin connection. Also in the reviews of the remote on Harbor Freights website people have said this remote works with the 5000 winch,so something changed

You can extend the antenna so long as you make it precisely twice it's original length. I've done this many times with RC equipment.
Work with warn vr8000?
