Ironically, duct tape is horrible for use on heating ducts (and against building code) as it quickly dries out, hardens and cracks.
I've wondered if it isn't a myth that it was used on ducts. I can imagine some homeowner doing so, but there is tape, as you are obviously aware, made for ducts that actually works. I expect that "duct tape" was a mispronunciation of "duck tape" and one that might have led to someone actually trying it for the purpose for which it is so ill suited.

@@gussnarp it is more likely that cloth tape for sealing ducts was made first, and then the cheap plasticized mass market version came later.
During WWII, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese was made with grated rather than powdered cheese
Depending on packaging and cooking instructions, that might actually make it better. Oh, and storage.
NO! Duct tape is a completely different thing. Duct tape is made of metal foil (hence it's silver color) and an adhesive tolerant of temperature fluctuations. Novice use of duck tape on ductwork results in eventual seal failure due to the adhesive's and material's inevitable breakdown as seasons change.
HEPA filters were invented to filter out particles of radioactive materials (like plutonium) during the Manhattan Project.
... and there is also Duck brand duct tape.

This is very interesting. Instant coffee was also officially created for the military. The military wanted to provide coffee to soldiers, but the soldiers didn't have time to stop, boil water and wait for the coffee to brew, so instant coffee was created.
TLDW: All good things were invented in or around 1943. Before that, life was pure hell.
Ah, yes. The famously pleasant years of the early-to-mid-1940s. Wherein no major complaints could be lodged about the state of the human condition on a global level.
Wrong! What about sliced bread? Invented in 1928-1929, I believe. And Betty White was born shortly afterward.
From the googles: Duck Cloth sadly has nothing to do with waterfowl or their feathers and instead takes its name from the Dutch word doek for 'cloth'

lol i already knew the slinky, silly putty, and cheetos cheese dust already. Two history channel docuseries covered those. The toys were on Toys that built america and cheetos was on food that built america

but don't use duct tape on your air ducts, use aluminum tape.
I worked on a lot of ducts that had neat white outlined square grid marks from the dried out adhesive, and the backing hanging off.

So, if you have a dislike for needles, like I do, then you should avoid being exposed to nerve agents...lol

What, I know as 100mph tape isn't duct tape. It's a flexible aluminum tape. Used by the AF to patch holes in aircraft from small arms and fragments of antiaircraft shells.
The superior choice for actual ductwork. Bless those military engineers and scientists.
