  • Here we use simple form of aihanmi katatedori nikyo as the basis for our study. This type of study is essential in building the groundwork for fluency and effectiveness.
Kaeshi waza is reversing an opponent's technique. In most aikido practice kaeshi waza is the practice of reversing your opponent's aikido technique. That is certainly a useful study. However, our opponent is not confined to aikido techniques. To introduce basic reversal principles we look at an opponent who pushes back, pulls away or attempts to twist out of our technique.
Henka waza, on the other hand, means changing techniques. One case for this might be to open with a technique intended to misdirect our opponent and when they react we immediately switch to another. Another case might be when we begin to execute one technique and our opponent stops us, forcing us to change to a different technique.

I really enjoyed part 2 Kaeshi Waza and pressure testing focused on Nikyo. Again, Greenwood Sensei and the NASA crew do such a great job at being master technicians in Aikido. We've been focusing on Nikyo for some of our new students, so it will be interesting to try out some of these Kaeshi Waza once they become more familiar with the basic technique. Thanks for the great demo and video, Sensei. -Jeremy-

Thank you for the great insight. Now i can understand my nikyo better and the possibilities of doing the same with the other basic techniques.

That's great! You can continue with this idea. Over time allow your partner more freedom and intensity. It's important to allow your techniques to fail in order to understand them better. So let yourself "lose" more and you'll "win" more!

Thanks for the advise. I totally agree with you. It is in losing that learning and growth happens. I will continue to practice with this thought Again thank you Sensei.
