  • Hearst Castle, on Pacific Coast Highway, has many different tours you can take. We did the Grand Rooms Tour for our last video ( • Hearst Castle: Grand R... ) but for this video we wanted to try something different and went with the Upstairs Suites Tour. We both really enjoyed it as it gave you a lot of historical information about the house and the guests while letting you see many of the lavish rooms. Check it out if you get a chance and be sure to visit the Neptune Pool which was just reopened.

I've been on a tour once when I was about 19-20 years old with my family.. it's unbelievable how much wealth, history and extremely amazing architecture is in that place. Only a handful of people in the history in human existence have ever lived in such extravagance. It's astonishing.

Yeah, goodness, I've been here several times over the years, since the 1960's, and this place never gets outdated. That being said, I've never taken the upstairs tour; so now I have another reason to visit again, amazing. I'm aware the Neptune Pool recently underwent a massive restoration and it looks fabulous.

Yea, I had been many times over the last 7 years and had never seen the pool filled. I was glad to finally be able to see it!

I have taken the standard tours several times but it looks like the upstairs tour would be worth doing just to see the celestial room and library. Glad you got to see the Neptune Pool; it was being remodeled when I was there last year. One tip: the new movie about Hearst Castle featured at the Visitors Center is the absolute best video of its kind that I have seen at a historic site. Well worth viewing.

Yea, this was my first time not taking the Grand Rooms tour and I can't wait to go back and check out some of the other ones. It was also my first time seeing the Neptune Pool and it was pretty epic to see. I will have to check out the video next time!

Thanks for sharing this part of the Hearst Castle Tour!
In the early 90’s my Mom, older brother, & I took the tour that didn’t include the bedrooms, so that was very neat to see!
After our tour( that included the cool indoor pool!), I was browsing the books in the gift shop, as I always liked to buy a book from a place I’ve traveled to, my Mom recommended I buy the book that Marion Davies wrote, saying the perspective of
“the Mistress” might be more interesting, than the typical books written about WRH & San Simeon etc. And it DEFINITELY was worth it! Such a fun read!
I still remember there was one line in the book where she made mention that William Randolph Hearst seemed to have endless “energy”, and often the parties they hosted, would run into the wee hours of the morning, she remarked, “ He was always rearing to go, while the rest of us were dying on the vine” Lol, I definitely recommend people check out the Hearst Castle if they are in the area, it’s a bit pricey for obvious reasons as maintaining that historic property has to be costly, but it’s worth every penny, and the views of the ocean from up there are breathtaking!

As I recall from my visit in 1983, all of the art, statues, ornate ceilings and part of the exterior was the original piece of work. Seeing The 3 Graces standing casually on the grounds was fantastic.

The Hearst castle is a place that many architectural students visit! Julia Morgan is one of the first female architects, she studied in Paris FRANCE. She was beyond her time in skill, she retrofitted the castle for earthquake's, and suspended the ceilings on wire's, to help with movement from earthquake's! I have been to Europe and by far the Hearst Castle is my happy place I grew up going to the Hearst castle, since I was 4 year's old! I know a ton of stuff about it, I love History because of it! You can't go wrong, with going here, trust me! It is a rare GEM!

I did the Grand Rooms Tour 20 years ago and will be visiting Hearst Castle again in December. In your opinion, does the Upstairs Suites Tour better than the Grand Rooms Tour (this time I will be visiting with my wife and my 14-yrs old daughter, while 20 years ago I was visiting alone). Thanks!

It’s unlikely anyone in this time and economy could pull something off like this. Following the 1950’s most countries enacted strict export laws so that these describe items could no longer leave their native shores and were preserved for the nation. Hearst had the luck to be wealthy at a time when the First World War decimated Europe and their governments were willing to part with their treasures at wholesale.
