As a newer rower I find this really useful to keep in mind when doing steady-state. The power transfer when I get that flexion right seems so much better. Your point on compressing like a letter C is spot on for what happens when I get tired and lose concentration.

Appreciate your videos! I’ve probably watched a dozen or more and learned a lot about heart rate zones, understanding training intensity, structuring UT2 training and more. Love to see new content

Thank you, very informative. Could you make a comment or even better a video on the breathing pattern and how it should or shouldn't be entrained with the strokes? I've always followed the bunch that says you should exhale all through the drive and inhale through the recovery until your lungs are more or less full at the catch, but have always suffered from reflux from my stomach (GERD I think is the medical term) due to the high abdominal pressure when you get into the catch with full lungs. This has got so bad that I nearly thought of quitting rowing altogether. Then, recently, I started to do the exact opposite (in during the drive and out during the recovery, getting almost empty at the catch, I think the former Olympic Xeno Mueller is advocating this). I don't know if this affects my performance, but it seems to reduce a lot the reflux issue. Do you have any thoughts or experience on this problem?

Xeno has it right. Breathe out as you compress so your lungs are empty at the forward direction change. I use a two breath cycle with one longer exhale as I complete my compression into the front end and a second quick exhale at the release. I don't really think about the inhalation. That takes care of itself for me.
I have trouble imagining what a long exhale through the drive would be like. Sounds pretty absurd (and as you note, uncomfortable). Where did you get that guidance from?

    What is under your seat?

It is a CORE Perform seat. The modern version is called an A.R.S.E. set. It has a lateral axle so the seat will drop slightly to the right or left if your weight is not centered on it when rowing. I consider it an invaluable accessory for rowers that are training for on the water performance. For indoor rowers it becomes valuable at higher skill and performance levels due to it's function reinforcing symmetry and balance. There is a link in the video description for the product if anyone has an interest in learning more.
