Thing is, if there were surviving specimens, they have certainly been wiped in last few hundred years with man becoming the apex predator of the ocean and causing pollution on never before seen scale over the ocean. As well we would almost never find any evidence of such a creature existed or lived up to recently, decomposition in the ocean would never meet conditions for preserving carcasses. In that example, and the person is pulling marbles out of a bag at a steady rate, and nothing is influencing the speed at which they draw marbles. First off TY for making this video and second I gotta say your pace of walking while steadily talking all around that seaside town and staying on point is super impressive lol.
Here's the problem with the collector's curve. It assumes that everything in the population is within reach of your hand, using the marble-in-a-bag analogy. Abyssal sea creatures probably should not be considered part of the same population as that which scientists have been making more frequent discoveries, and thus there should be different collector's curves for them.
I can't believe that a video of this quality has less than ten thousand views. This is the same quality as Tom Scott, it should be getting millions of views! I wonder how many other such videos are being hidden from me due to the UA-cam algorithm.
Can we just appreciate how on time he was to each location he needed to be to either make his point or point out a location. Well done and awesome video.
The most accurate collector’s curve for sea monsters, but still a typo on the word ‘frontier’ at the beginning. There is no better depiction of how the mind of a scientist works.
Imagine delivering with great precision a seven minute speech about science topics on a single take, for some neckbeards to keep pointing out a typo at the beginning that is barely even relevant

The production and presentation quality of this is amazing! You truly are a worthy successor to Tom Scott now that he has stopped making "Interesting Things/Places" videos. Amazing Talent!
I’m really glad that this didn’t come off as a clickbaity “top 6 missing sea monsters that are definitely still out there” type of video. You’ve clearly done your research and you sound like you know what you’re talking about. Good job, keep up the good work :)
"We're missing six sea monsters"
Well jesus Frank your only job was to keep track of them and you lost SIX?!
Don’t blame Frank man. Its not his fault they got lost.

Physically yes. Everything else...
Look. If you know, you know. If you don't, don't ruin it for yourself.

considering that deep sea creatures rise to the surface when in stress and pollution causes them to have stress, now it is the perfect time for them to emerge
Not entirely sure what this refers to, most deep sea creatures already ascend towards the surface every night as part of a common cycle. I guess their might be more factors but they already do it on a daily basis
I'm not really sure how much I buy the marbles out of the bag comparison.
In that example, and the person is pulling marbles out of a bag at a steady rate, and nothing is influencing the speed at which they draw marbles.
But the speed at which the sea monster curve has leveled over the decades is being influenced by how quickly our technology is advancing, the rate at which we are doing underwater exploration, and the increase in easy ways to document sightings or corpses of animals, using photos or videos.
