- (Please note: This podcast heavily spoils the original Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, and Remake itself. It DOES NOT spoil Rebirth, which I [Colin] haven't even played at the time we're recording.)
It's me, Colin. This episode was originally supposed to be a KnockBack; or, I should say, I replayed FFVIIR in preparation for that particular show. And maybe I over-prepared a bit, with 10 pages of typed notes amounting to 3,900 words. But here's the thing: Dagan doesn't have time to finish the game because he picked up a new animation gig, and yet, I don't want my unnecessarily thorough preparation to go to waste. So instead of KnockBack this week, you're getting a second Sacred+ episode, and I drafted three fellow Final Fantasy nerds to assist me. As such, please welcome Summon Sign's Brad Ellis, Punching Up's Gene Park, and LSM legal analyst Rick Hoeg for a three-plus hour convo all about 2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake. I'm now finally prepared to play Rebirth!

I hated him in the beginning lol he talks so slow and sounds so uninteresting but what i mean to say is that Dustin is cool and I love to shake his hand. I believe he is a good man ..... For me i'm the opposite of hogg. The last 5% of remake and rebirth is my favourite thing square have ever done.
Rebirth, i loved all the way through but i was thinking it was around a 9 for most of the game, until i got to the ending and then i think its easily a 10/10.
And as all of this thing unfolds it only makes me love what they did with remake more as well.

As someone who never beat the og, my uncle had it and I was in awe when I saw it in person in 97, I absolutely loved remake. I may not have caught on with all the og callbacks but it is my favorite jrpg (apart from rebirth now, which I’m in the middle of) and I still plan on going back and playing the original. I’m also playing crisis core, so seeing this game universe in a weird order is still totally enthralling. Fantastic show gents, all star lineup.
Yeh I don't think it matters playing the remake first as long as you plan to play the original. It will just make it even better when you replay remake/Rebirth after you finish the og, and get you really hyped for the 3rd part

Edit- after listening to the episode, I'm suprised there wasn't any discussion about sephiroth and what he's doing, and also a big change they made to his physical appearance.
And also Scarlet/Barret/Dyne happened in OG originally

46:35 you actually could go back, thats how you got Tifas best weapon, in wallmarket - you need the key card to enter the city again which was dug up over at Bone Village. The woman outside the wall even hints about dropping her key card there. Might be for disc 2 or 3 though- forgot when you could.
Cloud is a better and more human an nuanced charachter in Remake/Rebirth than OG, but as for his personal behaviour in OG game Hamaguchi said It was a 21 years old guy that had been 4 years in stasis or coma, sufffered from social isolation and was shy to begin with, he creates annarmour around what he thought was confidence and toughness as he saw in Zack, his personal reference. And after Hamaguchi the comfident , joyous and over the top personality of Zack ...thats how a person with social isolation would tru to do It.

Hard mode is where the gameplay really shines. It’s a little annoying you need to beat the game to play hard mode though. Normal is a little too easy.
And Rebirth’s hard mode is even better with perfect guards, more parry options and better dodges, which opens the option to “brute force” hard mode in a more skillful/reactive way.

Final Fantasy VII Remake certainly does have the best RPG systems in the modern day series and I think they should use it in all FF games going forward. I fucking love it that much. I really enjoyed XVI as well but going from Remake to XVI’s combat system felt like a substantial step back.

I literally just finished FF VII remake yesterday. Very good game. Probably gonna take a break before starting Intermission.
I’m kind of a XIII liker too with the combat, but even if you hate the game I feel like VII Remake owes a lot to lessons learned from XIII. I think a fair amount of the Remake team worked on XIII too.
They're both made by the same team. FF13 is all over FF7 remake. I've played them both deeply, and you can really tell. I don't love FF13, but I think it's decent.

At 2:43:00 Colin kinda brings up an interesting unasked question of "should Remake, Rebirth and the third one, be played back to back to back as one whole game, since they are technically one game, and not viewed as three games?" I don't think the ending of Rebirth is as mysterious as some people are making it seem like as to me it felt pretty straight forward. But even the end of Rebirth felt like we didn't get a solid ending enough to be a "cliffhanger" and felt like we were missing another chapter or two before the end.
The only thing I did not like about the rooftop fight is that the heroes just let the turks walk away at the end
Just remember, Colin is the type of guy that played TLOU2 *twice* before playing Remake.
Tlou2 is an incredible game. It has some of the highest production values in the industry. The gameplay is amazing.
And the story certainly insights alot of strong emotions in the player. You will feel Ellies anger. And it takes you on a journey and it will likely get you to go on the same emotional journey ellie does.
And hopefuly come to the same revealation of letting all that hatred go and just what the cost of the endless pursuit of revenge is and how Ultimately it achieves nothing. And if anything just makes you feel worse when its all said and done.

Actually speaking of how Shinra could get away with everything as they discussed - Rufus in the OG ff7 said his father used money to control people but what needs to happen now that he has taken over is rule people with fear, he says. very creepy but reliable. Rufus was definitely a much darker person in the OG.

For some reason they replaced Cait Sith with Yuffie on the plate drop scene. Maybe they were trying to do Cait Sith DLC and changed their mind.
The Materia system had a legitimate son in the sephith system of the Trails series.
The way to remember the expanded post-FFVII universe, before Remake, is that it’s AC BC CC DC and recently EC continued this.

Remake/Rebirth play so amazing it really makes me dislike how 16 plays even more. As far as story goes, I like the the idea of it but the look of the manifestation of fate looking like kingdom hearts crap really bugs me. Also, the fake out barret death in remake is so fucking shitty and now sets up no one ever being dead.
I actually think square are doing really well in this ps5 era. Ff7 and 16 and ff14 are all amazing.
It just a shame that they missed with forespoken. I feel like it had a lot of potential it just lacked a certain grounding that made it engaging and interesting. It all just seemed a bit generic. Its odd to say but i actually think the thing forspoken lacked was that nomura touch. That could have made all the difference. In how the story and characters were framed.

If only these dudes knew what was really going on with the story 😂 the meta-narrative is so awesome and way beyond some representation of the fans and the remake. All I’ll say is this isn’t a remake, it’s a sequel.

Currently in chapter 13 of rebirth. It feels like such a slog.
Speaking of wallmarket, it would've been well represented in the Remake - if they didn't have fucking Mario Galaxy music playing on loop the entire fucking time. It's supposed to be this seedy shitty slum and they completely fucked up the tone with the new music.
A long discussion about a flop game
The biggest problem with this Remake trilogy so far has been the whole Star Trek 09 Requel of the story. I’m just not on board with this requel story, what is the point, just remake FF7, stop with this multiverse alternate concurrent timeline Kingdom Hearts crap.
right, but as someone who finished it back in 97 and feeling somewhat like you- it is exciting knowing that we have no freaking clue what will happen in part 3- I mean, rebirth was "expanded" but also cut content. clearly it builds up something big with Wutai in part 3, we get that... but beyond that?
I bought Rebirth, and put about 20 hours into it.. But honestly it feels like a clunky mmorpg with good graphics. To a degree that I said hmm perhaps another time and I went back to Guild Wars 2, since that's how the combat should feel. I find that I'm fighting with the Camera on big bosses and have to resort to playing as Aerith for the view/extra healing/range. When I'm melee with Cloud I just get thrown around like a rag doll. I'm likely playing it wrong to a degree, but I've had this with all bosses.. I finished remake, but that was years ago.
I really don't like Gene Park anymore, the TOTK preview stuff was my last straw, not watching this.
I mean, this guy claimed TOTK was a locked 30fps at 1080p (none of which are true), like you look at any gameplay from the preview event and it was always running poorly. What's really strange is when people brought this up to him all he said was "uh, recording problem, it wasn't actually like this when we played" and lo and behold, game came out, runs just like that. It's one thing to not know and say you don't know, it's another to straight up lie.
Interesting reason as to why you'd dislike someone so much. You said last straw, what else makes you dislike him?
Grow up
The FFVII Re-trilogy may be good games at the end of the day. I'm sure they are well-made based on the praise I hear. But as someone who at this point has only played the original 1997 game and is resistant to the idea of remaking games in ANY capacity, I'm still put off by playing something that is still so inherently linked to the story of a game I've already played. I want new and original art over something familiar, always. FFVII is like one of my top three games ever, but I'm just not that interested in remakes, even ambitiously updated ones. I don't care about nostalgia. There isn't anything about the original that I WANTED changed, anyway. I even PREFER the original's visuals. More realistic visuals don't make a game better, only different.
Also, I'd need to get a PS5 to play them, which would be expensive AND require playing with a brown paper bag covering the PS5 to hide its hideously ugly form at all times. I don't know if that would cause overheating issues or not, but I certainly couldn't bear to have a naked PS5 in front of me, that would be out of the question. Hence my hesitancy to buy one. That and the overall lacking game library compared to every PS console that's come before.
Rebirth justifies splitting the game into 3 parts. The amazing quality and attention to detail present in each part wouldn't be there if they tried to remake it one game. I'm so stoked for the final installment.

13 has a wonderful soundtrack. Gran Pulse, Oerba etc was also well done. But yeah not a 13 fan.
