Adjara has been part of Colchis and Caucasian Iberia since ancient times. Colonized by Greeks in the 5th century BC, the region fell under Rome in the 2nd century BC. It became part of the Lazica before being incorporated into the Kingdom of Abkhazia in the 8th century AD, the latter led unification of Georgian monarchy in the 11th century.
The Ottomans conquered the area in 1614. The people of Adjara gradually converted to Islam in this period. The Ottomans were forced to cede Adjara to the expanding Russian Empire in 1878.
After a temporary occupation by Turkish and British troops in 1918-1920, Adjara became part of the Democratic Republic of Georgia in 1920. After a brief military conflict in March 1921, Ankara's government ceded the territory to Georgia under Article VI of Treaty of Kars on the condition that autonomy be provided for the Muslim population. The Soviet Union established the Adjar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1921 in accord with this clause. (Untill 1937 the name was Ajaristan). Thus, Adjara was still a component part of Georgia, but with considerable local autonomy.

@@nignig719 yep
This is a 'potpourri', or mix of songs. We sing a version of the first one in the Georgian choir I sing with in the UK (in fact we sang it on Georgian TV a couple of years back). We just refer to it as Nardanina, which is the nonsense word in the refrain.

Great music! I just have to wonder why several of the images of religious figures had Ethiopian Ge'ez writing under them?
It´s not ethiopian. It´s in old georgian, asomtavruli alphabet.
@@westasianmusic Wow, that is incredibly similar to Ethiopian Ge'ez alphabet!
@@sambaaxe There is a theory that Matthew the apostle travelled to Ethiopia with a Colchetian entourage (in Colchis they used Asomtavruli alphabet since about 10th century bc) so it's possible they spread it. Even though Ethiopia didn't convert until 3-400 years later, Matthew was the first one to preach there, and the earliest findings of Ge'ez script actually appear around that time. So there is a possible connection though there's not enough evidence to prove it.
@@brettervonkanada6102 that is not a crazy theory as there were Armenians in Ethiopia for a long time and there was actually an Armenian diaspora until the Derg in Ethiopia.
@@sambaaxe Yes except Colchis was a Georgian civilization, not Armenian, and the Asomtavruli alphabet is also exclusively Georgian. Georgians and Armenians are unrelated despite being literally the worlds oldest neighbors (and they share the border to this day). Also the Armenian diaspora in horn of Africa came much later than apostolic missions obviously. But in general Armenians are very diasporic and have been throughout history which is the opposite for Georgians who have been extremely insular and isolationist. Which is why you'll find a lot of connections between Armenian and other civilizations and it's pretty much expected, but finding connections between Georgians and others (Ethiopia, Euskara, Corsica/Etruscans) is much more rare and mysterious for anthropologists around the world, partly because these mysteries can never be uncovered, we can only have theories.

As far as I know adjaran people are Müslim and georgian.
Some of them are but most of them are christians
Yes, they are, because the ottoman empire forced they to convert to islam, but many of them refused and were killed by muslims. Now a lot of adjarians converted to Christianity
@@cercvacercva8954 And I hope all of them will turn to christianity again. I am a Kurd and we were torched by Ottoman so many times and now the New turkish government goes on torching.😓
@@cercvacercva8954 Especially the Adjarians living in the west converted to Christianity. Adjarians in the east are mostly muslim, because they live mostly in the mountains, which had a huge impact on religion.
