    Thanks to SMCO for their professionalism and love for MINI. The car was a mini rover from Japanese market 1995 year model. Automatic Transmission. Ive had it since 2011 and it was leaking oil like a beer keg. Once I had saved enough money, and found SMCO, I made the decision to get the conversion done. Would highly recommend anyone else who has a passion for minis to work with SMCO. They are profoundly amazing at what they do !

    Awesome car, love the fact that it actually seems usable and retains most of its "Mini-ness" while adding some reliable power. When you consider the cost of extracting 130hp from an A-series and making it drivable and reliable enough to last more than a few hundred miles, it feels like this kind of conversion makes more sense for a road car!

    I have a fairly spiced up 85 bhp mini with 3.44 FD. It is lively and already makes traction in 1st and 2nd difficult, even with 165 tires. I drove a sorted out 1380 with 286 cam, rollers, high CR, big valves etc... And with a high FD, even third with full throttle unsettles the car. So 130 bhp, if not much by modern standards, is enormous in a mini, particularly with all that torque lower down. I'm a proponent of "spec it honestly regarding your real world usage". My choice was a tame 268° cam that takes full throttle in 4th as early as 1500 rpm with little vibrations. It still revs to 7000 rpm no questions asked (but there's not really much power to be had over 6500). I saw crazy engine build that makes me salivate, but really, a good race engine will make you smile once a week, while a good, well behaved and torquey fast road engine will make you smile everyday.

    Nice build. Really nice integration with the stock Mini systems. I've been running one of the first D-series conversions that MiniTec did since 2009, and apart from some electrical issues at first it's been a great car. It had some torque steer at first but MiniTec fixed that with some new steering arms. It runs nice and straight now. My biggest complaint is that with 13 inch wheels and a reduced turning radius, I can only dream of auto-crossing my car. I've been following John McGee's work since he started working on his kit, and if I was going to do one now I would definitely use his stuff.

    • @Stevestonmotorco
      @Stevestonmotorco  3 роки тому +1

      Mini-tec has been making good stuff. I wish they had options for arms that weren't heim joints. Too bad about that turning radius! Pretty much have to use the late model steering rack limiters to not rub tire.

    • @Stevestonmotorco
      @Stevestonmotorco  3 роки тому

      Hi Jorge, yes as Jason commented the mini engine was an auto and this Honda engine is a manual gearbox. Costs depend greatly on needs and parts selection, but all said and done they usually fall somewhere between 25-45K CAD for the conversion and refreshing critical components like the electrics, suspension, brakes, and tires.

    • @Stevestonmotorco

    This is exactly what i want :/ just renovated the mini chassis and the bodywork is done... i planned to build it with d15z6 as it is my fav engine (i used to have it in my civic and i simply love that engine)... i have one in here... unfortunately i thought i will have to cut a bit from the floor of mini so i changed my mind (the side wings are already out)... another thing is, that it is not legal in my country. But even though i am thinking about that. Did you have to cut anything? I think not. But the difference maybe is, i have LHD. Did you use honda transmission? I guess so...

    Hi Phillip, is the stock brake enough to stop the car with this extra power or did you upgrade the calipers to 4 port and any modification on the master? McGee recommends a D16Y8 motor, from your observations working with the kit will a D16Z6 fit the same kit with 0 modifications? What peddle kit and clutch setup did you use since i'm also having a automatic mini and this kit is for manual. I'm searching for a engine locally and will reachout if i find one to go ahead with the conversion about the ecu stuff u had tapped in to. It would greatly help if you can share your experience on the above since you have hands on feel after the conversion. Thanks in advance

      Hi, this car uses 7.5 Cooper brakes, and they are enough with good pads and good fluid. The Z6 would work as well. And the pedals are factory mini pedals.

    Hi...did you have to change the final drive since you used 10" wheels?

    • @ExtremeScampi
      @ExtremeScampi 3 роки тому +1

      The rolling radius of the tyres is generally close enough that it doesn’t effect it. I’ve compared 13’s, 12’s and 10’s and they all give similar speedo readings, not different enough to worry about.

    • @Stevestonmotorco
      @Stevestonmotorco  3 роки тому +1

      The budget didn't allow for a final drive change this time, but the ratio is still fine for the road.

    From a budgetary perspective, forgetting the cost of the D16, how much should one save in order to do this, and what might be a reasonable cost for a used D16 in good condition.

      The auto transmission is physically larger. It has been done but it requires extensive fabrication of the body and subframe.
