Thing to keep in mind about Bluegills is they don't like hot sunny days anymore then people do. They look for shade and deeper water that's cooler then what's in the shallows. This means they aren't going to chase top water lures late morning or afternoon. Early mornings at sunrise or at sunset are the times for top water lures for Bluegills. Late morning means subsurface and slow. Boathouses, docks, lilly pads, surface moss and vegetation, weed lines, beneath fall logs, below surface hollow stumps, over hanging trees are the places to find Bluegills in late morning on hot sunny days. I've been a Bluegill fisher about 65 of my 70 years. There's only been a very few times when I didn't catch any of them.

@@PaintingOnTheCeiling First of all I don't fish period in temperature over 82. That's maximum, unless Catfishing on bottom. Which I don't do often. To hot and miserable for me. Most Catfishing around me is at night after 9pm. From the time Bluegills spawn in Spring and you can see insects in the air flying about it's top water time. Bass generally spawn before Bluegill so Bluegill hang near Bass beds waiting a free meal. Of course that's before top water season usually. So from that time till after Bluegill spawn is best time of season. That means early June here in the deep south where I am. So that's right on the verge of hot Summer. Bluegills are aggressive during spawn you don't have to use a retrieve at all. Just cast over top of their bed and they'll instantly strike. It's just after spawn as they are leaving the beds they slow activity. That's when you start retrieving. I'll let it sit till twenty seconds give it a nudge wait ten seconds give it another if they don't strike I pick it up and cast elsewhere. You'd be surprised how often they strike as you pick up the line. So don't pick up to quickly. Let the lure move ten feet along top of the water before lifting up. I'm talking Fly Fishing of course. Spin casting on a windy day Fly Fishing isn't possible I use a different method. I use weighted clear floats with no other weights on the line. They have enough weight to take the line out on casting yet still float. A leader of about eight to ten feet attached and floating top water fly or small popping bug. Straighten the line. Very slowly turn the crank handle pausing occasionally. Then start reeling again. Many times a Bass jumps it before a Bluegill with either type method. I never really go Bass fishing intentionally because I catch them Bluegill fishing top water regularly. Anyways that's my method. I grew up in the cool North before moving deep South and all this works the same up there also. It's just that it all happens a little later up there as temperatures bring on insect hatches. Hope that helps. Good luck fishing!
