I've read that Phil Spector had a wrecked Ford Falcon parked in his front yard and had everything he produced sent through it's dashboard 3" speaker because that's how 90% of new music was first heard and we all know how many hits he produced. Nothing will beat that AM sound in glorious mono for me. I grew up with it and am used to it. Thanks for sharing these airchecks with us.
I know. Back when stations were simulcasting, I always listened to the AM. I'm 57, and can remember when AM was the ONLY game in town. FM was reserved, for the most part, for classical music, and I had no use for that.
Also, AM had the advantage of distance. I've lived in West Virginia all my life, and after dark pulled in all the clear-channel AMs from the eastern US and some from Canada.
NO ONE is the answer to Big Dan Ingram. He was the all time sharpest, smartest, coolest, funniest, quick witted radio personality ever. His voice wasn`t too bad either.(LOL) He probably made as much money doing voice overs than anybody.
Bob Cruz SOUNDED more like Dan Ingram. Dan Taylor THOUGHT like Dan Ingram...he had all the quips & comments the way Dan Ingram would have said them. Obviously, some of the quips were actually Ingram's LOL. Ingram was unique; Dan Taylor (& Big Jay Sorensen) were effectively replicating WABC's 60s sound in 1988 in The Time Machine. Props to all.
Indeed! In fact, one of the station ID's for WNBC, voiced by Dan Taylor, called WNBC "Musicradio." Where did they come up with THAT name, do you think? Heh, heh.
He came there directly from the #1 country station of (then, at least) all time, crosstown 1050 WHN. In fact, he had the last speaking part on WHN when it flipped to WFAN 3 months prior.

Even though you can't see the whole thing, I really dig the Time Machine clock in the video portion of this.
Do you remember 4 track carts for all the commercials ??
