      @@rohitkochar9022 That's great. Looks like you have a good knowledge of SQL DBs. Learn concepts like leader election using Paxos or raft algorithm, replication, indexes, etc. I personally love the DDIA book which covers all these principles ( www.amazon.com/Designing-Data-Intensive-Applications-Reliable-Maintainable/dp/1449373321 ). Which are the teams in Amazon that you know have terrible WLB and which teams do you know have good WLB?

    • @theseattlecouple3746
      @theseattlecouple3746 2 роки тому +4

      Hello Octave 👋, This is an excellent question. Usually, teams with external customers like AWS S3, DynamoDb, SQS, SNS, etc., will have a lot of on-call loads and might have terrible WLB. On the retail sector teams which work on Amazon Search, Detail page (amazon website), Amazon seller central will also have lot o on-call loads. On the other hand, teams with internal customers (i.e., teams that provide services for amazon employees) will usually have less on-call load and good wlb.
      So the high-traffic external customer teams that I mentioned above do have an advantage that you will learn a ton as an individual contributor in just a couple of years. These are some systems that work on a global scale and handle millions of requests per second. These systems will have excellent engineering practices and designs that make them handle such high loads. As an individual contributor, you will learn a lot from these teams, even though they have a high on-call load. The decision to join external/internal-facing teams depends on a person's interests and career goals. There's no right or wrong approach here, but you should know what you are signing up for. If you are joining a new team, I would ask the hiring manager what their on-call load looks like and their deliverables for the upcoming quarter. I hope I have answered your question, and thanks for watching our video.

      @@theseattlecouple3746 Thank you! Such a tough decision to make. I want to join Amazon to learn and grow a lot but at the same time I want to spend time with family and focus on my health. Well, I will worry only when I get an offer haha. Current goal is getting the offer. So I assume promotion is harder if you work on internal teams since they have less visibility?

    • @theseattlecouple3746
      @theseattlecouple3746 2 роки тому

      No, not really. You can get promoted at the same rate in both places when it comes to promotions. Probably you can start with internal teams first and then move to other high traffic external systems after a couple of years, as wlb is essential to you. After a couple of years, you will be an Amazon veteran, and you will know how to navigate such teams. Again there is no right or wrong approach here. I hope you get the offer soon. I am wishing you the best of luck.

    how to prepare leadership principles with example??

    • @theseattlecouple3746
      @theseattlecouple3746 2 роки тому +2

      This is a great question. For leadership principles always have good multiple stories for each leadership principle. Use the STAR approach (Situation, Task, Action, and result) while narrating your story. If your story involved multiple contributors, then always focus on what was your contribution and emphasize that instead of the other people's contributions. If You are a senior engineer, then focus on aspects of mentoring and planning the project when explaining the story. While telling the result part of the story, please mention some quantifiable results. For example, my project helped to reduce the latency of our APIs by 100ms, etc. Do not use loose adjectives like "My project helped to reduce the latency of our APIs significantly." Significantly doesn't really mean anything. It's always helpful to provide concrete numbers so that they can get good signals for hiring you. Don't make up your leadership principles story. Interviewers are very experienced, and they can catch people lying very easily by asking counter questions.
      If you are interviewing for L4-L5 roles, then focus on these leadership principles first in the below order
      Ownership, Customer obsession, Bias for action, Deliver results, Dive deep, Disagree and commit, Earn trust, learn and be curious.
      If you are interviewing for senior engineer roles, then focus on these in addition to above mentioned.
      Invent and simplify, Hire and develop the best, think big, and Are right a lot.
      There's an excellent video about how to explain stories from a veteran amazon principal engineer. You can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/hU6BVxtGd5g/v-deo.html . I hope I have answered your question, and thanks for watching our video.

      Good question. This video is entirely from my personal experience and I haven’t met/was a part of any pip process. I don’t want to give information on something which I haven’t personally experienced. Again this does not mean pip doesn’t exist. It does but only a very few people are involved in that process and I didn’t want to generalize. Thanks for watching our video 🙏

    This guy is a liar. He left because he reached 5 years on his h1b and amazon didnt sponsor green card.
    EDIT: I didn't want to sound mean. I just wanted this guy to be honest about his immigration status. If you are honest, more viewers will trust you.

    • @darshnikdeep4650

      what makes you say that?

    • @Sanyu-Tumusiime
      @Sanyu-Tumusiime 2 роки тому +1

      @@darshnikdeep4650 Look at the amount of years spent at amazon. It is not six but more than 5. He 100% left just because Amazon didn't sponsor his green card.
      H1b has a limit of 6 years if they don't sponsor your green card. So he would have to return back. The only way to change this is to transfer your company. If you change your employer you can get 6 more years.
      You should be aware by now that Amazon does NOT sponsor green card for lower level software engineers. You should know that.
      Considering all this, the obvious reason why he left is immigration. He wanted green card sponsorship to stay in the US, but didn't get it.
