Although I did the Trent in my boat last year it was great watching your video! I loved it but there was always a sense of vulnerability on that big river. Hi Robbie and wow I've always wondered what that bridge looks like from underneath. I must have crossed it in trucks hundreds if not thousands of times.

A tale of the Trent and crap weather: Several years ago me and a mate were on a NY Moors hike when the heavens opened. A van driver pulled over and gave us a lift. The driver said he was himself a regular hiker since retiring from skippering a Trent gravel barge. His last job and the barge's, was at Nottingham, moored alongside the riverside concrete ware house at Trent basin, during demolition. This was to catch debris which would otherwise fall in the river. I see from your vid that this area is undergoing gentrification where the warehouse stood and found a pic of said barge on station at Connell Brothers website.
That morning light at 07:00 on the last day was intoxicating - and the mist on the river, truly great scenes, only available (to me) on this channel! A technicality: "Holm" is "small island" in Norse (think Stockholm or off the coast of Pembrokeshire Grassholm) and I have a very special own reason for having to point that out (*searches for blushing smiley but can't find one*). About the engine: surely you could get a second-hand (reconditioned) replacement with 25 hp fitted? The engine would be cheap, it wouldn't use any more fuel than yours, it's just the fitting, really. Oh and I really liked that cricket pub, it has the flair of a wirtschaft here in Munich.
Kilometers, Miles, Nautical Miles, MPH, KPH, Knots, we have the full set on the canals and rivers, its ok if you have a good conversion app. Glad to see you on the move again,
Robbie, you definitely have a knack for putting together canal videos, your cruising footage is consistently the best among the leading canal vloggers. The early morning misty scenes approaching Nottingham were exceptional. I recall you travelling the other way with Lou. Are all of the River Trent Locks unmanned at this time of year? I seem to remember that one of the locks last year when manned with lockies told you that you should have pre-warned them of your arrival in advance - presumably that would only apply to the busy season? How would you know in advance if you were supposed to pre-warn certain Locks on the Trent? Interesting how you handled those very deep 'push button' locks travelling solo. Useful to see how you controlled the flow into the lock. Mike
Well remembered Mike!!! I’m impressed, yes Gunthorpe lock was the one, except at this time of year only Hazelford seemed to be manned (by a lady lockkeeper no less). If I was going again at any time of year I would first ring the CRT (or any one of the locks if I had the number) and ask as they are always very helpful in that respect. Thanks for watching glad it was of some use! 8^)
Robbielad! Another beautiful vid! LOVE the early morning mist on the river, but not a fan of the cold (AND damp!), I'm afraid! Thanks for another great installment, and looking forward (as always!) to the next one! Best! John
@@RobbieCumming it's looking like I am going to have get my boat out to get the boat plate. Over played in places. Will be going down to sharpness for this. We dis go down the river Severn this time last year. It was nerve racking but did reach gloucester docks in a day from tewskbury. Envious of you at the moment. How's your refurb going. Ie your toilet
Before I start, I recommend you try my very favourite sandwich. You have to try it. Strawberry jam, banana and crunchy peanut butter. This video was excellent especially the end bit where the mist and shadows made for some lovely pictures. Well done Robbie to get us to the end of our journey
Don't know why the canals have KPH instead of MPH but if you want to convert KPH to MPH just times KPH by 5 and divide by 8 it doesn't work in reverse . ( kilometres being 5/8 of a mile ) .
@@RobbieCumming pmsl....remember the deaf old boy who flipped is lid at Lou's dog outside sainsburys......he was so close to being thrown in the cut....lol
That was interesting! Gorgeous mist toward the end. I moved up near the Chesterfield canal a couple of years ago, I'm very slowly getting more interested in everything to do with canals. I've not seen locks that size up close, lol! About the power issue with the current, I see you're often out in the middle of the river, but from what I've read, you might be better off nearer the edge. The current can be slower near the edge, and sometimes there are even eddies which help you along. Just something I've read. I'm not sure the Trent has that much in common with the Niger, ;) but it seems to make sense to my inexpert mind.
You’re quite right about that, although I don’t know these waters very well so I feel I’d want to avoid tree roots/branches and any rocks or banks that can lie on the bends in particular. But I’ll be thinking about getting over as close as possible the next time I venture back out on the river so thanks for the reminder!
@@RobbieCumming Welcome! but I guess you do need to be careful. Since I wrote that, I read something about flatboats on the Mississipi in the 1830s, before paddle steamers. With a good boatman, they could be all right, but if the boatman didn't know what he was doing, they could run aground often.
You made it Robbie that's what matters. Didn't like the Beeston Cut, but liked the rest. Holme to Bardney Lock in a day. With a breakdown, how about that.
@@RobbieCumming Still proud of that on a 6mph boat. Actually from the pub a mile downstream, however got through Newark, moored at pub topside of Cromwell. Radiod lock keeper to find time in the morning. Said I could go if I come now. With the tide so fast trip to Torksey. In the lock found my cutlass bearing had come off. Plus, typically I didn't have a full can of petrol for my reserve outboard. Chugged to Saxilby. Enough petrol for outboard to get to Lincoln. Walked over Pelham Bridge to Tesco for petrol. Outboard to Bardney, wasn't easy because it was weedy. Started 6am moored just gone 10pm.......not a bad days boating eh!
@@RobbieCumming LOL You seen the flag? In many of my videos. Now, when I started boating, flying the scull and crossbones was actually still a hanging offence. True. Law was repealed a few years later.
Some nice chem trail shots Robbie at 2:18 or of course they could just be exhaust vapor if we want to be boring. I do love your optimism of "Cranking it" with 13bhp......would those horses actually be my little ponies? btw , I quote the answer to your question.............when you read it, you will see another selling our identity situation : Although the British government obtained from the EC a derogation from metric directive 89/617 for road and pedestrian signs, it omitted to exempt waterway signs meaning that, to comply with EU law, canal and river signs must give distances in kilometres and speeds in "kph" (kilometres per hour). As a result, the Environment Agency has switched to kilometre signs on rivers within its Jurisdiction...........
Thanks for that, very interesting. Not sure why they use both on this CRT river though? Ah. Perhaps I’m seeing private mooring owners signs as well as the more “offical” ones...
As I hea many years ago some of the rivers stayed using km for the tourists and its gradually spread over the rest of the uk system. If your going onto the river trent after Nottingham enjoy the 6knt current
I have scoured the entire width and depth of the Internet and came to the alarming realization that I have seen ALL of Robbie Cumming’s travel logs and the well has run dry. I have clicked through all the likes, enjoyed every minute, only occasionally suffered through low points. Now what? What am I to do? The next log is yet days away! I know. Start all over again, pretending not to have seen it before. Still, there is a nagging worry that I have missed one in a dark corner.
Hello there, good veiwing n Very interesting, coming down to my home Nottingham, for passed 70 years (on n off?) now town is a bit sad? (sorry) Really nice to see Trent from narrowboat Thank you for sharing your video cheers take care see you soon
When we have to moor against harbour walls, we find a good trick is to use "angels". These are weights that we drop over the fore and aft lines and they keep the lines near the wall and have the secondary effect that if the boat drifts away from the wall, they pull it back in. Perhaps you could adapt the technique for occasions when you have locks like the one in this video.
what a shame I am not there in notts as I could have shown you around and treated you to a good nosh and a few pints.cant wait to see the next blog.ok my duck oya all right.
On , I think it was, the July 10th 1967, New Zealand changed from pounds and pennys to dollars and cents. We changed weights measures to metric December 14th 1976. The UK started it's change in 1965, but Brits don't like change much, is the only answer.

Lovely vlog again 10/10
Cheers Steve!
Good luck then matey. Yeah if you click on the ‘Shit job’ video somewhere you’ll find out all about the toilet!
A one finger salute to the party boat and a pub breakfast, who can ask for anything more to end a video.
He he thank you, glad you liked it!
Before I start, I recommend you try my very favourite sandwich. You have to try it. Strawberry jam, banana and crunchy peanut butter. This video was excellent especially the end bit where the mist and shadows made for some lovely pictures. Well done Robbie to get us to the end of our journey
Nice thank you xx
You’re welcome thanks for watching 8^)
Peanut butter and banana is great but peanut butter and dill pickle is better!! Thanks for the great video.
Are you winding me up?! Dill pickle? Alright I’ll give it a go! 😜
Nope not kidding always been one of my favorite sandwiches
Don't know why the canals have KPH instead of MPH but if you want to convert KPH to MPH just times KPH by 5 and divide by 8 it doesn't work in reverse . ( kilometres being 5/8 of a mile ) .
Can't really beat a Wetherspoons breakfast for the price. Some absolutely beautiful photograpy Robbie. It's given me an idea. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Dave v glad to be able to inspire you!
if you carried on more into nottingham, sainsburys is right next to canal and if your leaving your boat theirs always other boats there
Already wayyy ahead of ya! And thankfully still 2 week winter mooring instead of 48hr. Woohoo!
You’re quite right about that, although I don’t
know these waters very well so I feel I’d want to avoid tree roots/branches and any rocks or banks that can lie on the bends in particular.
That’s pretty good going Malc!!
Hang on... you’ve got a cutlass?! Malc you Pirate!!
@@RobbieCumming LOL You seen the flag? In many of my videos. Now, when I started boating, flying the scull and crossbones was actually still a hanging offence. True. Law was repealed a few years later.
Say Hi to RetroRestore & all ...
Proper boater 👍
Some nice chem trail shots Robbie at 2:18 or of course they could just be exhaust vapor if we want to be boring. I do love your optimism of "Cranking it" with 13bhp......would those horses actually be my little ponies? btw , I quote the answer to your question.............when you read it, you will see another selling our identity situation : Although the British
government obtained from the EC a derogation from metric directive 89/617 for
road and pedestrian signs, it omitted to exempt waterway signs meaning that, to
comply with EU law, canal and river signs must give distances in kilometres and
speeds in "kph" (kilometres per hour). As a result, the Environment Agency has
switched to kilometre signs on rivers within its Jurisdiction...........
here is the link for the fully cop out : www.bwmaonline.com/Transport%20-%20Waterways.htm
Thanks for that, very interesting. Not sure why they use both on this CRT river though? Ah. Perhaps I’m seeing private mooring owners signs as well as the more “offical” ones...
Personally I blame 'The Units of Measurement Regulations 1995' but in its defence it still allows us to call a 'pint' a pint
GREAT PINT I mean point Martin! Cheers 🍺 (forced to use a litre stein emoji🤦♂️)
TBI and the best cricket ground in England 👍👍
Ha ha thank you Paul really appreciate the dedication!!
Hello there, good veiwing n Very interesting,
coming down to my home Nottingham,
for passed 70 years (on n off?) now town is a bit sad? (sorry)
Really nice to see Trent from narrowboat
Thank you for sharing your video cheers take care see you soon
Going to watch your very first Vlog now. Bye4now. 🤞👋🏻
Interesting- I can’t quite picture it but sounds like a great idea
@@RobbieCumming - I will send a link to you email address
Superb vlogs Robbie subbed. liked and belled
Awesome! Thank you and welcome aboard! 8^)
Trent lock is an awesome place to go
Yep! The Lister is still tapping like a Lister. No harm there then. 😂
15:51 pretty much what I think of those type in any envirment. :)
did you say 13.5 HP? wow you do live on the ragged edge. enjoy your videos.
Ha ha yep this is eXtreme narrowboating?!! Cheers!
Four fifths of the square root from the bow to the crest of the firs bow wave in feet, equals the speed in knots
what a shame I am not there in notts as I could have shown you around and treated you to a good nosh and a few pints.cant wait to see the next blog.ok my duck oya all right.
Ah that is a shame but I was grateful to see it without bias through a visitors perspective! What would be your choice for Pub of the Week?!
@@RobbieCumming Try the Pit and the Pendulum in Nottingham city centre.
@@exileinderby51 pit n pendulum????......can think of alot better pubs in town then the pits.....rather go in the Thurland and that's bad enough lol
On , I think it was, the July 10th 1967, New Zealand changed from pounds and pennys to dollars and cents. We changed weights measures to metric December 14th 1976. The UK started it's change in 1965, but Brits don't like change much, is the only answer.
