I hope you may be still answering questions. When you drop a lower unit on a Mercury 2-stroke (1998 115hp) do you need to put it in neutral, reverse, or forward before you start undoing all the bolts?
Hi John, a good friend of mine has a 25HP outboard Merc. It leaks oil, but it isn't apparent until it's in the water and an oil slick appears. Prop shaft seal was suspected but it doesn't seem to leak under pressure outside of the water. Is there any other seal, that comes to mind? I don't think there is a shift rod in this motors lower end. Could it be the drive shaft seal? Thanks in advance.
Question if you don't mind, I have a 1997 Mariner 50hp 4 stroke that I will be replacing the water pump on. I don't see how to unhook my shift linkage or whatever the piece next to the driveshaft is. I've seen other videos where the lower unit just drops off without unhooking anything else and others where they unhook a shift linkage above but I don't see that possible on mine. Thanks for any insight you may provide.
1 First: are all of these videos for the repair on the Mercury 40hp oil injected 2 stroke w/ sn OG071472 applicable to the entire year spread, including 1994? Where can I obtain a puller like you used to remove the the lower gear shaft?

is this exactly the same engine as a 40hp Mariner by Mercury approx 2001 model ? It looks the same.
It’s a 2 cylinder mercury/mariner 30/40 hp came out in 1994 made till 2004
