Colloids are known as plasma volume expanders because they increase intravascular space by pulling in water via oncotic pressure (also known as colloidal osmotic pressure).

Nurses may administer colloids for patients who experience hypovolemic shock, severe bleeding, burns, or low albumin levels in the blood.
Colloids are different from crystalloids because they are larger, expand the intravascular space very quickly, but they tend to cost more and carry a risk of allergic reactions.
As a nurse, you'll want to assess patients for allergies, monitor blood pressure, and follow other the other things mentioned in the video.
