He has to write his own lyrics to the theme and with the same rhythm/tempo of the piano…..and he does it wonderfully. (It’s like a chef making a dish with random ingredients instead of his own selection.)
For me this song came out when I was in my mid 20's. I was working class poor. I was working 50-60 hour work weeks and just barely getting by. I remember I heard this song one day when I was landscaping a millionaires house. It was 90 degrees out and was just like how did I get here? Wishing to get out of the situation. Through perseverance I picked myself out of that situation and eventually started to do better. Fast forward 3 years and I was vacationing in Paris with some friends and this song came on the radio in the cab ride to our airbnb. I was like guys, 3 years ago when this song came out I could barely afford to eat and now I am vacationing in Paris. One of the highlights of my life to turn things around.

It's hard to explain - but it feels like BoB's verses are just telling you a story; Eminem's is like he's putting words to *your* feelings/story. His flow & cadence, the way he raises his voice as the verse progresses, the use of more curse words - you can FEEL the frustration, anger, desperation that happens when you're trying to achieve your dream in his voice and hard delivery. I remember hearing this on the radio, and spending hours trying to find the song. The only reason why I searched for the song was because of Eminem's verses at the end of the song. Eminem's part in this song was the catalyst for me getting into Rap/Hip-Hop.

I’ve loved this song since a young boy, back then it was just a catchy tune. Now as a 21 y/o I know the meaning of Eminem’s verse. What if he never picked up a pen? What if he just made excuses? What if he just gave up? I find motivation in my own life with his verse. Those days when you don’t feel like getting up are the days when you NEED to get up and show up. What if you could live your dream if you picked up the pen?
Same! I was 8 when I heard this song and at 21, I appreciate the words even more; "It didn't fall in his lap so he's not even here/ he pretends..." Truly disarming if you've ever struggled with motivation or reaching your goals.
