You’re wrong, as Casey has said ABBA had seven consecutive top 40 hits most of them reaching the top 20 and songs like Waterloo reaching the top 10. In the United States we tend to appreciate bands who actually tour the United States so we can see them in person. That is why Elton John,David Bowie, etc. became much more popular is because they came out and performed for the public in the United States😊
I remember that on a day like today, in 1977, maestro Casey Kasem announced this, one of the greatest songs all time finally at # 1 on Billboard Charts.
Casey was so impressed with the exceptional quality of this song that he did something he rarely if ever did on his show. When it debuted at #33 in late January, he predicted it would become a number one hit. "Watch this one go to the top." It took a little while but he was eventually proven right.
1977: Sitting on my bed. Listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40. My little white transistor radio from O.G. Wilson's is tight against my ear because "Hotel California" is supposed to be naughty and I don't want my mom to hear. Can't sit still when "Dancing Queen" makes #1 and jump up and twirl, Stevie Nicks-style, around my bedroom. I'm a homely, awkward, skinny kid with buck teeth and glasses, but for just a moment, I'm a dancing queen and Casey dances with me. Thanks for the memories, Casey. RIP.
Gail Choate What a lovely post! Casey's AT40 was broadcast on Ireland's Radio Nova so we could hear him across the sea in England as well! I loved the little stories he told about the artists. It was an hour longer than the BBC Top 40, so we heard all the songs and all Casey's input too. :)
I honestly don't know how you found this, but this is truly amazing. My all-time favorite song hitting #1 on AT 40. Never thought I'd ever hear this segment. A million thanks for posting.
Thank you for posting this. It brings back good memories, I remember this broadcast as well as the week they were #1 on American Bandstand with Dancing Queen.
Americans never appreciated the better music from Europe...
This American has been a giant fan since 1974. 👍

+Gail Choate , Wish I had a time machine.
I love ABBA! Been a fan since 1978....
I remember that red label 45 rpm single! The flip side was 'That's Me' and I wore both sides out. 😊
