Machine Shop Tours: Always Sunny in the Shop

- Machinist and UA-camr Aaron Durda (@AlwaysSunnyintheShop) gave us a tour of his neat shop and showed us some of the most recent restoration projects he's been working on.
Located in the hot and sunny Phoenix area, Aaron approached the machining trade in 2017 and has been hooked ever since.
Ever since he discovered his passion for the metalworking, Aaron has been spending his time building his shop. In particular, he focused his efforts on buying, restoring, and selling vintage pieces of machinery such as vises or drill presses.
The star of his shop is a Monarch Lathe series 60 featuring a powered compound, a quite uncommon characteristic that makes this model pretty special.

I have to say I am extremely impressed with what you have been able to accomplish in such a short time. As an engineer who has been involved with machining for 64 years, (yeah you read that right) I am glad to see someone interested in the trade. I have owned my own shop for 37 years and I love machinery. That Monarch lathe has features that I have never seen before and it is a great piece. Most of the equipment in my shop today is CNC, but that would fit right in. You've managed to compile a nice group of machines, and your restorations are beautiful. If you ever decided to open a shop I think you'd do well, but if you decided to open a museum you'd probably do just as well. Thanks for the tour!

G'day Aaron, everything about your shop is a credit to you. The first time I saw your intro I was really impressed - clean lathe, and everything organised. I was particularly envious of your drawer full of drills with dividers. I'm pleased to say I now have a long desired set of drawers, with drills, taps, cutting tools, etc. all organised and labelled using the same trays that you used. Keep up the great work!

My suggestion,
1)Air tank keep outside building-safety first.
2)Keep cutting tools in the box piece by piece or keep vertically to avoid cutting edge damage.
3)All storage tools and equiment need to have a tag so they know where is it.

Thank you for the shop tour. We purchased a Sharp knee mill in the mid 1990's to upgrade from a Bridgeport Series II. I was down on it for being an import machine, but it proved itself very well. Fit and finish was very nice. Repair was infrequent and I found that the areas that I worked included impressive engineering. Parts for it were sometimes challenging having to source from west coast distributor and parts coming out of the Pacific rim. I grew to think that Sharp was a class act.
Burr King are class machines. I tried to get our shop to upgrade, but we were deeply committed to Kalamazoo and/or Baldor for that size machine. We had Wilton and some others for our 6" belt and belt and disc machines. I managed to get one if those Wilton's for $100 for my home shop when we did some shop equipment liquidation. We repurposed a 3 phase power cord plug to use on a repurposed 3 phase branch circuit. I suspect that most of the home shop buyers steered clear of the 3 phase equipment. Being the maintenance man insider, I knew what I was buying!
I suspected that you were in industrial tooling/supplies sales from hints you have previously dropped. I worked for the same shop for my entire career, which honed me into "our shop" expert, but limited me on what could have been gained by being in and out of others shops. Our shop philosophy was to purchase designed for the purpose equipment and my philosophy was to repair and maintain to OEM specifications. We had a panoply of brands throughout the shop, but were vastly loyal to Mazak for milling and turning. Mazak CNC inventory was around 22 machines. The other 20-30 major machines were a smattering of other brands. When I started in 1982 we still did lots of manual machining, but CNC was the future. I was already a skilled electrician. The company needed my skills for CNC troubleshooting and for maintaining facility power distribution. I learned my precision mechanic skills on the job, having no previous machine shop experience. I was just a young buck in my 20's and I grew up with a company that expanded from $8M to approaching $200M annual sales before I retired.
Watching you take such a rapid deep dive for a home shop is a lot of fun.

I have spent plenty of time after a project and just kinda enjoyed sitting at the welding table, looking at the lathe. Functional and beautiful.

BTW, if your grinder takes a long time to wind down, it typically means the bearings are dry. If they start growling, it’s time to replace them.

Hi Aaron, just found your channel, same as you been into machining about 3 years but could restore and make things, Abom69 is very inspirational
Two of the major commandment for any shop, one is to protect your floor space... every piece of equipment should pass muster as far as usefulness, capability vs floor space. Obviously this is less of an issue in a 10,000 square foot facility than a thousand aquare feet.
Second key commandment is capability. I am very impressed with your choices. There is probably no better lathe built by human hands than your Monarch. The shaper with auto downfeed and universal table, and the original vise.... what a score. I would suspect the panagraph, is a cool machine but one day it will succumb to the commandments and be replaced by a laser engraver/cutter.
You spoke of wanting to be able to cut large stock.... build a blade holder for the shaper, turn it into a once in a while power hacksaw, you'll be able to cut I-beams if you desire or rail iron. Slow yes, but a power hacksaw is almost as mesmerizing as a shaper use.
The Rollin saw, the only saw I have seen better is the one Fireball has, an auto feed Marvel .... which takes up a lot of space.

Good eye! That is the first ever Rucker straight edge, ground and scraped by the man himself. I was the lucky winner at the Summer Bash last year and got to bring it home along with a Vintage Machinery embroidered apron.
You got a deal on those strong hold cabinets. I would love to find something similar.
Yeah buddy they are fantastic. Be really good for a shop like yours where I’m sure dust is an issue with the big door open and everything you have is super sized and heavy.
I like the shop tours, but I would like it even more if the videos started with a slow pan of the shop showing the overall layout, etc.

I live in parker az and was wondering how you find business closing or where is your favorite place to look for deals? I like how clean your videos are i get new organizational tips all the time.
Mostly Craigslist. Have to be the early bird on good deals- I have a CL app to send me alerts on a few things, and otherwise just check it a few times a day in Tools, Heavy Equipment, and Materials. Have to get lucky, but being on there frequently is key.

I would like to purchase the Deckel if you would have any interest in selling it. I understand that in is worth a lot more than what you purchased it for. Very Nice shop, question about your cut out shapes for your cabinet with the mic's and stuff, how did you do the cut outs ?
You can use a machining center for a lathe much easier than you can use a cnc lathe for a mill. Just put a lathe tool in the vise and put the stock in an ER collet in the spindle. ,touch off the stock like you would a tool . set y as the tool is centered on the stock and make simultaineous moves in Z and X , Instead of G17 use G19. it's good for short parts sometimes.
LOL I spent half a day on a construction job as a teenager looking for the board stretcher my foreman told me to find

How much did it cost to ship that?
I just purchased a lablond lathe 19 in swing 54 inch center. I have never done anything on a lathe or a mill but can’t wait to get started. Should I be thinking of buying a smaller chuck and a smaller tool post to work on smaller parts like 1/8 in diameter.
Not necessarily a smaller tool post, but larger chucks won't usually clamp down on a part 1/8" in diameter. You can also look at getting a collet chuck- it will be more accurate and you can get collets down even smaller than 1/8".

Santo Pezzotti, I have three LeBlond lathes. Two 13's and one 17. I have completely restored one of the 13's and the 17. I will be working on the other 13 as soon as I get my house rebuilt. Danny Wilsher Thanks I am 70 years old never ran a mill or lathe or surface grinder I just purchased all three expect delivery at the end of October I’m working on my shop to be able to except them so I’m looking for all the help I can I will definitely take advantage of Your offer. Are you in Machinist or a hobbyist how long have you been doing it. I could see that there’s so much to learn but I’m excited about it and looking forward to it

You got it made in the USA, try having that in your home garage at home here in the UK? here in the UK youd be considered a freak, a pariah if you admitted to folk you like machining, but the UK is an absolute dump going from bad to much much worse! my younger brother lives in Roseville California and hes told me to get and join him there, but at 61 with my shop here im way too old and skint to! ;-)
I wondered why people were looking at me funny.. not that my garage has a lathe as big as Aaron's; in fact I'm not sure a lathe as big as Aaron's would fit in my garage! So I make do with a little Myford ML7 :)

Lot of nice machinery, but I'm more interested in what you can do with them. This channel appears to be more oriented to collecting and fixing machinery, not so much machining and fabrication.
