In almost all the wedding parties in Kiribati that I attended, decorations made of coconut tree leaves are lined up where you now see those dresses being hung. They are called “te bwerei”. This wedding took pace in NZ, I presume, so it would be impossibe to put “te bwerei” on. I may guess that it is the new “bwerei” for the Kiribati parties in their newly adopted home. It is very likely that those dresses were the gifts given to them by the famiies (from both sides) in Kiribati, several days before this event. The fact that they are hanging them there means they want to give it to all the invited guests (blood relatives not incuded) at the end of the party. When the party is coming to its conclusion, the MC will say something like this: “Dear honored guests, thank you for taking the time to attend this wedding party. Temoku and Eriteti, would be honored if you would help yourselves with those dresses hanging on the wall to take home and keep as a memento for this joyous occasion”. Having said all this, I must admit this is pure speculation on my part. The one who was in charge of setting up those decorations woud be abIe to give you a straight and correct answer to your question. However, I doubt he or she is watching my comments. Thank you and I hope my comments heIp.
