While the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) was once a formidable force in American railroading, some criticisms suggest it had significant shortcomings. For instance, despite its historical significance, the ATSF's extensive and sometimes outdated infrastructure struggled with efficiency and reliability compared to its competitors. Issues such as frequent service disruptions, delays, and a lack of modernization in its rolling stock and facilities contributed to operational challenges. Additionally, the ATSF's aggressive expansion strategies led to financial strains that occasionally overshadowed its operational successes. These factors combined might lead some to view the ATSF as one of the less effective railway systems of its era, especially when compared to more innovative and adaptable railroads of the same period.
Both Southern Pacific and Union Pacific had (or in the case of UP, have) some of the most interesting locomotives ever built. Obviously, in terms of paint schemes, Southern Pacific wins because they had at least three (Daylight, Black Widow, Bloody Nose), whereas Union Pacific has kept their Armour Yellow since the 1930's. Both of them, of course, had their share of iconic steam locomotives; some of them thankfully still survive such as UP's Big Boy and Challenger, as well as SP's Daylight and cab forward.

Carolina Railfan Productions I forgot to mention from my comment that I wrote for you and this video, as you know I love the Southern Pacific steam locomotive 9994. And I am totally upset of how they set up the train for the steam locomotive, where the passenger cars are mixed up. And I would see some Amtrak cars connected with it and so forth, instead of the orange stripe daylight passenger cars. Like I said before I really hope if the Union Pacific who now owns the Southern Pacific, I hope that they will realize that and try to recreate the old-school Southern Pacific daylight passenger train. Specifically for 9994, but first I hope they'll try to have that steam locomotive to be coupled to their vintage Union Pacific passenger cars. They did that before, so I hope they can do again. And I hope that they can have Southern Pacific 9994 to be part of their Union Pacific heritage fleet, because the Union Pacific now owns the Southern Pacific nowadays. And I hope they could have 9994 to be part of the collection of their heritage fleet. And I hope that they'll do their best to repaint some of their vintage Union Pacific passenger cars, with the orange stripe daylight style of the Southern Pacific. Made specifically for 9994. I really hope they will do that someday, I'm going to have my fingers crossed on that forever if they actually do it someday. And I hope my wish will come true. I also hope it will satisfy railroad enthusiasts and other people that love trains so much throughout America. Because as I said before the Union Pacific really needs to recreate and bring back the old school Southern Pacific Railroad and style, because the pride of America Railroad now owns the Southern Pacific. And is in complete control of all of the railroad lines of the Southern Pacific, and nowadays there are more Union Pacific diesel locomotives throughout those lines. And there's hardly any Southern Pacific diesel locomotives throughout those lines. So anyway I really hope that they will realize that a lot of people miss the Southern Pacific trains, and I hope the Union Pacific will try to bring them back. And if they do for new diesel locomotives throughout those Southern Pacific Railroad lines, including the Union Pacific lines. I hope that the diesel locomotives will he painted with the Southern Pacific Black widow style and Southern Pacific daylight style. I also hope that the locomotives will also carry the Union Pacific name and logo on the sides of the locomotives, so people will be reminded that the Union Pacific owns the Southern Pacific nowadays. But most important of all I hope the Union Pacific will have Southern Pacific 9994 to become part of their Union Pacific heritage fleet, and hopefully they could try to recreate the Southern Pacific daylight style specifically for 9994. And her future excursion trains, from Cheyenne Wyoming to northern California, to Southern California. To the other Southern Pacific Railroad lines, and hopefully to go throughout the Union Pacific Railroad lines. Not only for special excursions provided by the Union Pacific, but to also be part of special events for the Union Pacific Railroad lines and Southern Pacific Railroad lines. Someday I hope the Union Pacific can do that, because they now own and operate the Southern Pacific. And a lot of people including myself Miss the old school Southern Pacific style, from their locomotives and trains that we used to see as kids. I hope the Union Pacific will realize that, because the Southern Pacific is very important to Railroad enthusiasts and other people that love trains in America. And if all this comes about someday, I think it would be cool if Union Pacific 844 and Southern Pacific 9994. First of all they had met together from before, including pulling a big excursion train together before. So anyway I hope they can do that again someday, however if they can have two of the locomotives to pull a big excursion train with Union Pacific passenger cars and Southern Pacific passenger cars together
Depends, better at what? Paint schemes? Sp. Locomotive power? Up. Freight and passenger service? Sp. Surviving steam locomotives? Up. Unique locomotives? A tough tie, but i have to say sp. GIGANTIC locomotives, steam and diesel? Up. Surviving a merger? Sp, including the attempted southern pacific-santa fe merger. Stealing their merger-partners name? Sp, or "Up" as theyre called now. Having an absolute BANGER of a song? Up(the real Up). Building the transcontinental railroad? Up(I guess you can count Sp as well if you consider them taking over the central pacific). I'll admit, I'm a little biased in favor of southern pacific, since they had a big hand in developing my hometown, but there really is no wrong answer to which railroad is better, so my answer is "yes".
Well in my opinion I think both southern pacific and Union Pacific are the best. Sp has there famous engine still alive GS-4 No. 4449. Up has there famous engines that are alive as well FEF-3 No. 844, Challenger No. 3985 & Big boy 4014.
From what I read, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific merged in 1996 because they were all of a sudden dwarfed by the new Burlington Northern Santa Fe merger. The purchase of Southern Pacific gave Union Pacific the most direct line between Los Angeles and Houston, therefore more efficiently connecting the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. The many booming industries and natural resources in Texas is also the reason why Union Pacific bought Missouri Pacific in 1982.
