The Reptile Super Show(link below) is here. My last item on the to-do list before I leave the states and continue my reptile projects overseas. The show is BUSY and BIG. We don't have a ton of animals for this expo but what we do have is quality and most of it is difficult to find at most expos. Don't forget to check the website available page for updates. Thanks for watching!!!

I agree with you there are way to many ball pythons out there. People think they can get rich quick and that’s messed up because your supposed to breed animals you enjoy or need help and not just for a quick buck. I know not all of them are like that but 90 percent are. I have a few ball pythons because me and my younger brother enjoy the species but we don’t breed them any more. Yeah we could sell them but I believe when you get a pet your supposed to care for it it’s whole life not just give up on it because you lost interest or it doesn’t make you money anymore. These keepers nowadays 🤦‍♂️ everyone seems to want cheap disposable pets and they forget their living creatures. Sadly the pets pay the price and those people just move on to the next money making fad 🤷‍♂️. Sorry about my rant but it drives me nuts. Honestly wish you and Apple all the best and hope you both have a great day keep up the great work bud 🙋‍♂️✌️

I totally agree. I think many breed ball pythons because of its polpularity and because of all the morphs, it's fun and exciting and they hope they will get that one special snake that will make them rich even if it isn't that easy. And then while they try to to create the snakes that will make them money they will oversaturate the market and create lots of ball pythons no one really want. I don't think that's right to the snake, after all it's a living animal and imo if you're going to be a breeder you have to take responsibility of all the animals you breed, like if no one wants them and keep them in good conditions. So I really wish some people thought and planned more before they start breeding and about what's best for the animals.

It is the same over here in the UK. Our IHS shows generally consist of corns snakes, ball pythons, crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, leopard geckos and bearded dragons. Its very rare to see anything else. I don't go to them anymore for this reason.

Couldn’t agree more about the ball pythons. There’s currently 45,291 available on MorphMarket, which is completely insane. Frankly, it’s straight up irresponsible. People like to talk about when they get a ball python, but then go silent when they get rid of it or it dies. I’d love to know the ratio of BP’s sold to BP’s that are rehomed or that have died young. I’m willing to bet the figures would be disturbing.

    • @teijaflink2226
      @teijaflink2226 5 місяців тому

And anyway they live for a very long time, so many don't consider that or that a ball python is not a dog or a cat and they get bored. People really need to stop just breeding and breeding ball pythons only because they want cool morphs.Total insanity, it's a live animal, not some cool looking thing.

All the people saying it is a cycle that happens every so many years are kinda correct but the last time it looked dismal, it was no where near the volume it is now and other things triggered the previous down-cycle. This leans heavy on extreme market saturation with a sprinkling of slow economy.

What they should do is diversify with other species IMO....some discussed these options with me last weekend but I am not one to sell anybody a dream. I am just here as a resource and can provide those opportunities. I had countless discussions with non-BP breeders and vendors about diversifying the species they are working with and selling so some people are making moves.

Needs to be said and more importantly needs to be heard..
    The BP arc has broken....
Pie bald was good enough for myself back in the 80s....
Many peeps came up huge financially with the BP and this assisted the growth of the herp community .....
    However .....

LMAO RE too many ball pythons at the show! Agreed! On the other hand, the only snake I have currently is a normal (best in my opinion, not a big morph fan) ball python I rescued when a friend found him at Gibbs Park in Huntington Beach. He has a special place in my heart because he wasn't doing well when he was found- a yearling who was very thin and scared. Now, 6 years later, 4 feet long, fat & happy, he never turns down a meal. I used to be that kid in the 60s and 70s that everyone in the neighborhood called when there was a snake that needed help.

I haven't be to any shows for a long time but I'm told that they are mostly Royal Pythons and Leopard Geckoes. If you take a look at morphmarket, of the 76,000 reptiles, inverts, and amphibians listed, 45,000 of those listings are ball pythons with about 100 listings selling multiple BPs. if you use morphmarket as a "state of the industry" in terms of numbers, 60% of animals availbe are BPs and thats absurd. So its no wonder that the shows being held today are hypersaturated with ball pythons.

Especially since I'm there just to look around and not in the market for a new animal. The last show I attended a few years ago, I showed up in the afternoon when thing are a bit more quiet. I had a look at Craigslist a couple years ago for snakes in my area just out of curiosity to see what's around, and there were a TON of listings for people trying to get rid of their pet ball pythons along with their cage setups. I'd imagine a lot of people used stimulus money or just extra money they had after 2020 to start breeding. Seen the same around me. Balls, cresteds, and axolotls everywhere. I wouldn't mind so much if like you said, there was someplace for them to find a decent home, and there was more diversity. Market will correct, but I think a lot of small breeders will probably exit the hobby. C'est la vie.

      @DMExotics  5 місяців тому +1

Yes, but there are also some very big name breeders coming in hot with 10-14 tables of ball pythons so there is a lot at play. UA-camrs and "influencers" also played along. I suppose you go to what is likely the biggest show now and you see the biggest and most obvious representation of the hobby. My next expo in June I will be stuck at my booth and Apple can go do the filming so I probably won't have an opinion lol.

I haven't seen more than one or two breeders like that, but I wouldn't at the shows I go to. Mostly small hobby breeders and some that are on the show circuit. I've always been surprised with the number of people breeding anything that requires large rats and up food. I would have thought the higher food costs would deter more breeders, but then again, I don't think most vendors have really sat down and ever done the math.

The market (and prices) for cresties apparently crashed in the last 6 months, and maybe balls are going through that now. In Florida, the shows have been 60% or more balls and cresties for a decade, and there has to be a degree of saturation as demand shrinks and supply skyrockets (while health declines).
I've been thrilled to see some variety recently, particularly in the CBB availability of "routine" species (tokays, fire skinks, etc) and in colubrids. I think access to content like yours, and even bored MorphMarket browsing, has exposed people to what's really out there and awakened the joy the hobby kind of lost there for a while.

The market will correct itself after more than half of those 46k snakes are unfortunately and hate even thinking about it probably just shoved into freezers. We would need hundreds of shelters to properly care for all the unwanted snakes. Me and my wife run a reptile rescue and have few friends that do the same and we all have the same problem to many ball pythons, bearded dragons, and leopard geckos. All the rescues and shelters we stay in contact with were all basically maxed out and we I’m sure it’s like that across the country as well. Unfortunately most breeders are just pumping out babies thinking about dollar bills and not about welfare of the animals all these unwanted snakes and lizards are going to have no where to go. i totaly agree on the ballphytons. same with cornsnakes and bearded dragons. people did not think about how many people are actualy want to keep them and that those animals live about 20 years. you see all those breeders on youtube producing so many animals and every second "normal" keeper is breeding some aswell, going for those one of a kind animal and producing 20 other animals in the same clutch. and some seams to do this with retics and other big animals too. there is basically no point to breed those species. even animal shelters over here in germany have multible cornsnakes, ballphytons, boas and beardys in all the diferent morphes that used to sell for a lot of money. i have seen lavender cornsnake babys for 5€ at shows and whole collections of ball phytons droped of in the forest or dumpsters to freez to death. even if the morphs brougt some attention and money into the hobby, it will backfire now. one can only hope that this will regulate without to much suffering. also it made the hobby a bit boring i think because its missing the variety that nature has to offer.
thanks for bringing up this topic and for the video.

@@DMExotics you are totaly right and i think it realy needs to be addressed. breeding is a neccessery part of a animals live and for keeping them, but this needs to stop. if you have something rare its cool to breed and have it in the hobby and its a way to prevent wild caught etc. but keep a good eye on the marked. ballphytons are nice and cute snakes and great pets but not everyone needs a rack with 50 of them.
      please keep addressing those issues.

@@teckendrums A rack with 50 of them? I think a rack with 500 of them is probably way more common than people think. So do you know why I address this and nobody else does? Because I have no sponsors. A UA-camr with "freedom breeder", "redline shipping", "morph market", etc etc is not going to address ANY issues for fear up upsetting their sponsors so they just fake their way through social media and continue "influencing"...but they sold out a long time ago. I am like the independent Tom MacDonald of reptiles 😂🤣😂

I mean what can we do about it, the people are obsessed, it's insane just chasing a color while the snakes get weaker, I lose my mind when I see new breeders.

I like to see new keepers enter the hobby, and most do it with a pet ball python, but for those that head into breeding and following the advice of UA-camrs and influencers are skipping basic economics.

@@DMExotics New keepers, fantastic, high volume new breeders is what kills me. I'm extra grouchy right now though so idk.
Hey if you have any tips to pay off 18k in debt other than getting a better job which I'm working on let me know lol, medical and auto stuff, home stuff and over indulging eating out all the time messed me up. 48 and single no kids, I gotta get this shit in order.
Im so disappointed I stayed with this company so long and didn't pay attention to the industry, now my best bet is to head to a different part of the industry which I have no care for but my passions and hobbies won't pay the bills in this economy, unless I luck out big time or go to school for many years, I gotta get moving now, it's hard sometimes to watch my guys like you following dreams sometimes, because so many say follow your dreams for work, but damn, what percentage of ppl pull it off........I know your retired though.
Anyways, any tips or wise words welcome..
Im fighting low testosterone and such so Im working on that with doctors, so the already low mood and fatigue puts real hurt on my mental state right now, trying to fight it and stay positive.
Tryin to think of extra ways to pay this debt down until I can maybe make this job change. Other than the typical stuff on youtube, I've done reselling stuff, then that got saturated, just overwhelmed, sad thing is I don't buy much stuff, I'm good at budgeting and drive an old jeep such but my going to dinner and lunch out is what kills me, but when you live alone and your an overthinker like me dealing with feeling down, it's a real pick me up to be around people out for dinner and such. There is nothing to do in my town unless the weather is good, I live in Bakersfield so I know you know lmao, you've driven through here.
      Anyways, any tips appreciated.
Take care Dan, glad you still pop out videos. You always have awesome animals.

Balls are overrated in my opinion. Just to many people breeding them and the over abundance is ridiculous. If I was going to get another snake or recommend someone a snake, it’s def not a ball.

This is the thing nobody understands. If you get a really cool morph its still a ball python and therefore a waste of everyone's time. Go play outside.

"Too many" ball pythons? Don't worry about it! Let the market forces dictate what happens! Isn't that what capitalism is all about?

    • @DMExotics

Oh I don't worry about it....trust me, it makes my table stand out more and more thanks to all of that. The only thing that bothers me is where they go. They were mostly looked at as valuable items before and now they are starting to look like invaluable items. You can see where that is leading.
