What a great and exhaustive video! I am not sure about using such an amplifier as the main thing in your system today, but they sure do look very good, especially the sa-600 IMO. I was wondering how exactly you do your measurements. Whatever equipment you use seems to allow for a wide range of measurements. I looked up the quant asylum branding and found their website where they sell a bunch of equipment. I am not that knowledgeable on amplifier repair but I do know quite a bit about turntables and the like and wouldn't mind branching out a bit to amplifiers. I was wondering if you would be willing to give me some tips on the equipment you use to get your measurements via software.

Thanks for the comments and am glad you liked the video. I believe the owner is using it hooked up to a pair of vintage JBL speakers, with one of his many systems- not his main one, though, but he was using it with the Paragon for a bit. The piece of gear you want is the QA403 analyzer. They have a great users forum and there are many tutorials to guide you through different tests. If you are going to do amplifiers, you will need to purchase or make your own dummy loads. As with any piece of gear, there is a learning curve.

@@vintageaudioreview Thank you for the fast reply. I actually bought a sa-660 on ebay last night that is supposedly working but has an issue with the power switch. I was thinking of, after repairing the power switch issue, fully servicing it and getting it back up to spec since it seems to be a fairly easy amplifier to work on besides the proprietary part names and what have you. I will be sure to look into getting that audio analyser and am excited to start learning more.

@@trevor245 Congrats on your purchase and hope you get it going the way you want it. I would hold on replacing all the electrolytics until you can run it on the analyzer and see how bad the hum is....unless that is something that you really enjoy doing...

I’ve used one of these for around 6 years now as my primary hifi amplifier, after having it refurbished by a fantastic tech with experience in vintage JBL gear. My amp actually has no hum whatsoever, at any volume level. I’d be curious what on mine is different to have accomplished that. Interestingly, these are exceptionally sought after in Japan these days. Several Jazz Kissa bars have and feature them, such as Volontaire, which has two.

Thanks for sharing your experience and glad you have no hum. This one is pretty much original as far as caps, hence the hum which does not really detract from how my friend is using it.

@@vintageaudioreview makes sense! A lot of my caps were replaced. My unit had a power issue that was very difficult to access due to the weird construction of the device. Honestly I’m curious how many of these were made- I’ve never seen a number on the back over 9999.

@@dorfus They looked to be a pain to work on- at least if you had to replace certain things. But they are vintage cool!
