Projecting textures or images onto spherical objects is easy inside SOLIDWORKS. Any image that was derived from the spherical appearance, such as a Mercator projection map of the globe, will automatically map and stretch to fit to give an accurate appearance. If that appearance is a displacement map, where colors represent height values, it can also be used as a 3D Texture. In this case the displacement map of the earth is applied to a standard spherical face and with the options “Fit Height/Width to selection” enabled it automatically covers the entire face perfectly.

I am using the image from NASA but no matter how I try there is always gaps in the projection :(
If the image has any kind of border around it that might prevent it from reaching all the way around. This is the image I used: mlccadsystems-my.sharepoint.com/:i:/g/personal/marcus_brown_mlc-cad_com/EcM9clzNkHhHvK7ot_AD84gBg2XwUbYXIXl3UptzeHrXrA?e=QeM8R5
