    The side bags are supos to move a litle to avoid wobbling in higher speed. Ktm has disegned it that way.

    I have one of these bikes. The 'excessive' power issue is very simple ... no-one needs what it can deliver but everyone wants it.

    HI Craig, Great review. I recently went through a complete change in that I traded out my Harley FLHTCUI ( Ultra Classic ) to move forward to an adventure bike. It was not an easy decision. I purchased just to be sure a Suzuki Bandit - Why too see if I could even make the switch to something other then a Harley - Well long story short. The Bandit proved to me that the fun factor was back in my riding days. Gone were the hot and heavy giving birth riding positions. I did as you have done - rode and tested out everything. I ended up ordering the KTM 1290 Super Adventure.
    I have since put on 8000 km on the bike in such a short time. I absolutely love it. It is fantastic on fuel, not heavy at all. Remember we both are use to 900 lbs. The motorcycle does have the potential yes to be a missile but knowing that power is there is perfect for passing a few cars stuck behind a logging truck if you know what I mean.
    I ride everywhere with this new bike and love everything about it. Its quiet, you can get off the bike after a day of riding and not feel like you have been at a Springsteen concert :). The cruise is a perfect way to control the power, I use it all the time, but if like i said earlier I want to pass - just roll the throttle and problem solved. To date 5 of my friends since my buddy and I purchased our 1290's have traded out - Harley Road King, Victory 8 Ball, Another Ultra, Ducati - you get the picture all have moved over now to adventure bikes.
    The cost of ownership will blow you away. I farkled out my bike with all kinds of orange bling - crazy it was like 200 bucks :) I could not buy a t-shirt and a hat for that at the HD store. My oil change intervals are every 15000 km - the harley was every 5k at 250 bucks! My point is you will be shocked at just how much fun you will have with one of these. The Victory, Harley's etc all are great bikes - truly they are , but when you hit 55 plus and want lighter , cooler, easier to maneuver or simply want to do that gravel road or fire road instead being stuck on asphalt all the time - these new adventure bikes are just a blast. The KTM 1290 Super Adventure put the fun factor of 10 + back into riding for me.
    Cheers, Purdyman

      +Turn Key Web Solutions.com Thanks for input, it is great to hear about your experience. I think we all should reinvent ourselves every once in a while and I think a new adventure bike is just the way to do it. I will keep my Victory for two up riding, however. So far all of these bikes are blowing me away with just how much better they are at just about everything. Power, braking, shifting, riding modes, etc... I am renhally looking forward to new experiences.

    Once again Craig you provide some straightforward info that gives us what we want to know about a new bike. Keep up the good work ! My only constructive criticism is try to reserve your hand motions to emphasize only an important point. Can't wait for your impressions of the BMW 1200 GS.

    Good review. I go all the way with you. This is the most value for money bike you can buy. You will pay far more for a new BMW GSA with roughly the same amount of electronic systems, and on the KTM you will have 40 bhp more overall. Allthough the GSA is an excellent bike as well in its own right.
    I have to admit, I adore the power. Without traction control it will powerwheely all the way through third gear, without being frightning, although it feels like that crazy engine makes you hang on for dear life. Of course this is not necessary, but then again the existence of most of the sports bike is not necessary then within the context of excessive power though.
    Bearing in mind that KTM is very sports- and power orientated it comes to no surprise that their bikes are mental on the powerside.
    The only small disadvantage I can think of are the very fine vibrations throught the handelbar, making especially my right hand numb from time to time.
    What allroad bike will suit you is a personal matter and choice, but luckily I can choose for whatever bike I will ride.
    In fact I have allready chosen, I do own a KTM 1290 Super Adventure now and I'm mad with it!

      I currently own a 2009 990 R and a 2008 ZX14 and looking to merge those into one bike. I know I won't be able to hit the dirt with the Superadventure in the way the 990R is capable but I want the torque of my ZX14 and the comfort of my 990 (@6'9" 275lb im forced to restrict my options) and this bike seems to have both. I'm a bit concerned about reliability issues (I had some with my 990) but 2-3 years warranty will remedy that.
      P.S. I test rode the standard 1190 ADV and it was such a blast but was thrown off by the roughness of the motor and the lack of torque down low (being used to a ZX14 isn't very helpful) whereas the 1290 is supposedly buttery smooth and pulls like a train from down low due to its heavier flywheel.

    Craig ran across your channel recently and really enjoy it! So happens I bought a 1290 SA about 20 months ago. I've got a Harley dresser so the SA gets less ride time. I bought it for the same reason you got your Yamaha. Hopefully to take me places I wouldn't normally be able to go on a 900 lb. beast. Your assessment of the SA is pretty spot on. Sure it's damn quick if you beat on it but what I like is the grunt everywhere. Pretty hard to pick the wrong gear. Other than throwing on a Garmin 665 with XM and a set of Rox risers it's all stock. The saddlebag door latches and locks can be annoying at times but they do the job. The bags do move a bit but as for their security, it's not an issue just the mounting system used. I've only put about 6700 miles on it so far but it's been a good bike. Will it take me up the Dalton highway one day? It sure would be nice but it seem this year my knees feel older than the rest of me. Anyway enjoy your upcoming trip as I'm sure the ST will serve you well.

      Thank you sir! I am really enjoying my Tenere, it is serving me well, but the 1280 SA is one hell of a bike. The new models look very tempting. Have fun and ride safe!

    Great review of the KTM1290 Super Adventure. I really enjoyed it, thanks. It makes perfect sense to settle on a bike that's capable of 'real riding', everyday use' and falls short of Holy $#!t grins if you want them from time to time. Hang on, that's rubbish, no it doesn't! Buy a bike that fits you ergonomically, is fit for as many purposes as you might put it to, that's within your budget but most importantly makes you smile the widest when you ride it. How many extra ponies it has that you might or might not use is completely irrelevant to a good decision.

    Do you need a bike w/ more than 50hp? I mean they did fine w/ that in the old days, right?
    Do you really need a bike?
    Pretty absurd to inquire about "need" regarding bikes, especially w/ a huge Victory tourer behind you.
    Only ask one question: was it fun?

    With all due respect it's not about power but about torque when you go touring. I believe the KTM has hit an ace with this bike (as long as the electronic gizmos prove to be reliable).

    Power. There's and old adage: "It's better to have and not need then to need and not have". Obviously you won't be using it everyday. If you do some two up riding with panniers, mountain riding and especially two up mountain riding with/without panniers you'll be appreciating the 160hps. Enjoy the ride.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому +1

      You are right, having all that power is great, but it does come with a cost (about $5000 in the case of the 1290). The question for me is, will a bike that makes 112 horses (Yamaha Super Tenere) do the same job as a bike with 160 HP? The higher powered bike may be faster in a drag race or 0-60 times, but in real world applications, they both can carry the gear I need, both can cruise on the highway at 80 mph and pass a semi-truck with ease.
      We all buy bikes for different reasons. For me it is more about where the bike can take me that it is about how fast I go while getting there. For example; on our Alaska trip, we will have a Ducati Multi-Strada, a Triumph Tiger 800 and a Yamaha Super Tenere. When all is said and done, we will all get there at the same time, and each of the bikes are all going to be covered with dirt and grime.
      There are so many great bikes out there and you really cannot make a bad choice.
      Thanks, I appreciate the comments. Ride Safe!

    The KTM bags are kind of loose because they're designed to break away easily when it gets dropped. They come off when you hit the ground so the bag mounts don't get broken while off-roading........ Or so the KTM rep told me. Looking forward to the rest!

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  9 років тому

      +Andy Andreson After posting my review I did see the 9 ADV bike test by Motorcycle.com and noted that they dropped the bike and the bags broke away without damage. That's cool, but they do still bounce around a lot. Thanks for watching!

    • @curtissmith8789
      @curtissmith8789 6 років тому

      I hear the breakaway aspect. I was told it's about aerodynamics, they were made to glide and give in the wind. Reported to give better high-speed stability, I believe Triumph did this first but don't quote me on that.

    Great reviews. Perhaps you may also ride the Triumph Tiger 800 xcx when you do the Explorer. I would like your thoughts on both. I understand the Tiger is comfortable and very capable both on road and off. Also the fuel range may be a consideration.

    great review, as the others. the tenere one was very informative, I didn't realize it was so heavy( also I think that engine was rated at 125 hp not 95) but the KTM this is a weapon on and off road, it would be intoxicating to ride, as you point out though all that power, for what? a few thrills. I would rather have a super tractable ridable bike over a missle. maybe the KTM is both. I am with you, after trading in my liter sportsbike for others of less outright power I find the ride is overall more enjoyable in my everyday use, not to mention more comfortable. keep up the good work. and try to ride the new Honda Africa Twin, if anything for your review, even the vstrom1000.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  9 років тому

      I double checked the HP numbers on the Tenere, I dont remember where I got the 95 number, but in my search I found 108-112 with just over 90 measured on the dyno. Maybe my original quote was on the dyno and I mis-read it. If it is more, even better. Either way the KTM has gobs more...I have seen it dyno'd at more than 130. But as you said it is not all about HP numbers. Thanks! I would love to ride the Africa Twin and the V-Strom. ..

    i amwith you on the seat height/weight having come off (literally) a Vic tourer. Looking at this exact model as a replacement tourer with some offroad capability. the bags are supposed to wobble evidently. the power is just a nice to have, same as a K1600gtl over the Vic

      Well buy it. It has to do with high-speed stability. Triumph has the same type of setup. Stability yaw rate that sort of thing.

    Just discovered your site while researching Klim jackets. I like your presentation style.Have you considered the Triumph 800 Xrx? It has cruise control, heated grips and a lower seat. While much less advanced, you could put some of the savings into upgrades if need be.I recently bought a Yamaha FJ-09 and love it, but it doesn't have cruise control.Cheers

      +FanOWater Yes I have considered the 800. I had decided to stay in the 1200cc range for better long distance comfort. But I will check out the 800 when I look at the explorer. Thanks!

    Nice review. But I have never heard of anyone EVER complaining about too much power. Just don't turn the throttle! Then the few times a year you need it for passing you have it. Not wishing you had it.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому

      +Chris Fischer Thanks Chris! I hope you understand that I am not complaining about having too much power. As I have said in other responses, it is just gets down to a cost benefit analysis for me. How much does that extra power cost and what is it going to get me. The difference in price between the SA and Tenere is about $5000, so I was simple asking, what do I get for that money and is it worth it TO ME? From what I have read, the 1290 will do a quarter mile about a second faster than a Tenere and it will go from 0-60 about a half a second sooner, but does that really mean anything in the real world? If I have to pass a truck, they are both fully capable of doing that easily. I have already done this on the Tenere several times and power/torque is not an issue. Based on the type of riding I plan on doing with my bike, I just could not justify the extra money. With that said the SA is still an amazing bike and I could not fault anyone for choosing it!

    I've been looking at this segment myself and have been drawn to the Vstrom and Versys. You never included them on a list. May I ask why? Is it the lack of cruise control? Thanks for sharing your process with us all.

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  8 років тому

      +CaptPuget Yes, cruise control is a must for me. I plan on riding this bike on some long rides that will include a lot of highway miles. In addition the Versys models are street based bikes--although, very good ones. I was looking for something that is able to do some off-road miles as well. Thanks for watching!

    WOW... Did he say too much power?

    • @LivingOffTheSlab
      @LivingOffTheSlab  6 років тому

      That is not exactly what I said...I said, that extra power costs money, $5000 in this case vs. the Yamaha S10. Given how the bikes is going to be used, as a commuter and a loaded touring bike, is the extra power worth the money? Both bikes will do over 120 and the 0-60 time is within a half second of each other. Given how the bikes will be ridden in the real world, are the extra horses worth the money? For me, the answer is no. Your choice may be different.

      +rockintigger I understand your point, people can and do tour on anything. Personally, I do not want to be hurting at the end of a long day in the saddle, I am not as spry as I used to be, and see nothing romantic about pain...lol. For this reason I choose a larger bike with a few creature comforts. And to be honest, we spend the money because we work hard for it and have it to spend. I would never belittle anyone who can not afford one of these bikes, nor anyone who chooses to buy one. As long as they are riding and enjoying there life, that is cool with me.
