- In this video, I use my vintage Jari Sickle Bar Mower to cut tall wet grass. This is a 1958 sickle bar mower that runs great and easily mows the wet grass.
I used my grandparents Jari when I was growing up in the 80's and early 90's but sadly my grandmother, thinking it was un-repairable, gave it away in 1995. Man do I miss that machine!
They were certainly a good machine.
That thing can still give a work out. Nice mower. 👍

I have the same model, use it about 2x a week to clip my pasture behind my cattle. Only takes about 20 mins to knock down the grass. Sometimes gets bogged down in longer bluegrass but stemmy stuff it cuts wonderfully.
Great old machine
Haven’t saw one of those in years, use to have one on the farm. Cut with it when I was a kid. Think it may have been a slightly newer model.
I used one of these years ago mowing in between christmas trees. My thing i did not like was it went to fast. And it cut to one side better than the other. still a neat machine
The ground speed is a litle high, but I still get quite a bit of work out of the old machine.

Where can we get one of these?! My grandfather had one about 30 years ago, I loved it, went with his house eventually, I've been looking ever since...
They were made until about 5 years ago, so a used one is what you will have to find.
I bought an old one about 16 years ago to cut down the high weeds and grass when we moved here. It does go too fast for that, but it ran great. $100 takes it.
The ground speed is a bit high for heavy cutting, and there isnt an easy way to cut the speed, but for most of my cutting, it is fine and does a good job.@@donaldshimkus539

Well Mr. Hawk Eye, my old Bucyrus Erie 22B has been converted from a shovel to a log loader. It runs and works, but I have never done a video on it. Maybe someday. You are one of the very few that have noticed it in the background.

That thing is great. Almost as old as I but I haven't had any "restoration!"
This old mower has had only some minor repairs to get it operational, and it really does a nice job. I did another video of it called (Jari Meandering) where it cut brush and tall grass. Take a look, and thanks for watching.
I just bought one for 75 dollars only thing missing is the belt, any idea on how long the belt is?
There are several models they made, and there were changes in the mechanisms over time, so their are a number of different belts they used. Mine was missing the belt when I got it, so I took a tape measure and went around the outside of all the pulleys to get the length, and measured the width of the pulleys to figure out what pitch belt is needed.
That machine was invented by my grandfather. JARI stands for Jacob A. Ronning

I picked one up at auction last week for $15. All it needs is a gas cap and it will be good to go.
I've a forest plantation with thick bramble between the lines , I wonder would one cut half inch bramble.
The model I have would not do the job, but other companies have made bigger and more powerful models that could do the job.

The teeth are quite worn, but still cuts pretty good. I haven't found any replacement teeth suppliers, so I use it as is.
I am borrowing this machine from my friend,but the belt is missing, what size belt does this machine use?
The belt on my machine doesnt have any markings anymore. The Jari,s changed a bit over time, and the belts are different. Take a piece of string and some tape . Take the string and run it around the outside of the pulleys, taping it in place to keep it at the perimeter, and measure the total length. This will get you a rough idea.

What do you have to replace the eccentric roller
I saw somewhere that some company still makes Jaris under a different name. If worse comes to worse, I would machine out a replacement on my lathe. A competent machine shop should be able to make you one if needed.

Do you happen to know the belt size it takes?
I don't have the belt size available, as the numbers on the belt are worn off because the back of the belt is used as well as the bottom of the belt to drive the mechanism. You will have to take a piece of string and go around the outside of the pulleys to get the length, and the pitch is 1/2 inch.
I do have a big gravely that plows has a mowing deck an a saw blade to cut trees. Looks like a giant tiller that throws dirt to the side. Its too much ta handle anymore. If aint got one bet u used 1.
The Gravely model L is is most likely what you have with the rotary plow, saw and sickle bar mower. I have a couple of them that I need to repair. should have one ready for next spring

I just discovered your channel and subscribed My you tube channel is all about vintage (mostly) trains. As to vintage equipment, I use a Ford 8N. I have a Fairbanks Morse Z, 1 & 1/2 hp, pan-head hit and miss engine. There is a very good you tube channel called shop dog sam you might like.

Works good just have to keep the dogs away from those things
