I had a feeling it was about that, but when it actually all came to fruition near the end my heart sunk because I know this feeling but I can't stop listening to this song. Perhaps it'll help me heal.
Went yesterday to the show in Madrid and cried during the whole song. I am still thinking of that magic moment and will remember It for the rest of my life. Thanks Vola for doing what you do
I've said it in comments on other tracks, but it just can't be said enough. This album is the ultimate blend of all the things that have set this band apart from others. Absolutely amazing.
I can't help but tell people it's like Tears for Fears but with djent soundscaping. Probably doesn't do them justice, but damn if 'everybody wants to rule the world' wouldn't sound good covered by Vola.
the soundscaping and design really is profound. I'd love to hear them cover a bunch of famous songs (ie Beatles and beyond) but with the sound of this album.
@@J-Allen19 I feel like i'm doing them a disservice if I listen just as background music. So much depth that you can get lost in just leaning back listening
@@vadacris4095 most of the listens were yesterday when the cd arrived, now i got the vinyl I can play the album through my turntable along with my cd player, computer, phone and tv!
@@koldbite2158 nice! Yea I stayed up late to play it after midnight! Was thinking I need to pick up the Vinyl for my nephew who is big into records now! Good call!
To me this song is about a mother having a premature baby that wouldn't survive, even after being hooked up to an incubating machine. That's why she couldn't hold the infant, but had to sit back, helpless, while her son eventually perished. The "polyester bear" would have been in the infant receiving room on "the 3rd floor" of the hospital, meant to welcome newborns to the world. Absolutely devastating, hauntingly beautiful, masterfully crafted song.
So I too had this question and was perfectly ready to accept this as canon. Until I reached out to the band. From Nicolai himself, who was kind enough to indulge my annoying fangirling for a little while this weekend and gave me this response; "Hi Aidan. Thank you for the kind words:) Asger likes to make up stories when he writes lyrics so Damian is a fictional character. If my memory serves me well, Future Bird is about a couple who have lost their child and the name of that child is Damian, but again its fictional and is open to be interpreted in many ways:) All the best, Nicolai, VOLA."
I'm hearing so many similarities with or influences from so many different bands when I listen to Vola it's crazy. Katatonia, Meshuggah, Leprous, OSI, Steven Wilson, even Dan Swanö at points and many more. And ofc a lot of djent which is not my cup of tea outside Vola. What an incredible mix of sceneries and emotions!
As i understand it Damian is just a random name of a fictional person, and Future Bird is about a mother or a couple losing their infant child. So i think its about being helpless and not able do anything about it, therefor wanting control. But i dont know for a fact and could be wrong.
I think it’s my favorite so far. I’m just crazy love it. Question - what the song time signature and bpm? I’m trying to transfer this song into acoustic guitar and it’s sort of tricky :)
Hey bud. So I'm in the process of tabbing out the song (though I am still pretty new to tabbing so don't take this as fact). Seconding Antoine, the bulk of the song works in 7/8, I have it at around 160bpm. Diatonic notes are E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D, which suggest D major or B minor, but I'm not sure on the major/minor split on the chords, and the song could be written in a Mode. As for time signatures, The intro and choruses are 2 lots of (7 bars of 7/8, 1 bar of 9/8) The verses are both 4 lots of (7 bars of 7/8, 1 bar of 9/8) The bridge interlude at 2:43, it is 4 lots of (3 bars of 7/8, 1 bar of 11/8) Then 4 lots of the same for the bridge verse at 3:06 Then 4 lots of the same for the ending at 3:32 The way that helped me count is 1 2 3 - 1 2 3 4 (for the 7/8) and 1 2 3 - 1 2 3 4 - 1 2 (for the (9/8) Going by this, I've found the beat emphasis is on 1 , 4, and 6 when it is in 7/8. Hope this helps!
This song won't leave me for a long time, if ever. Absolutely devastating.
Can't stop listening to it too.. just beautiful

Took the words right out of my mouth
I see you all the time in the comments when I listen to bands like VOLA, tesseract, the contortionist, etc. you’ve got good taste friend 👍
You know you found an underappreciated prog song, when the first comment turns out to be from a fellow cockroachposter and ihloite. Cheers!
This one is special, very haunting. #1 in the album for me.
Much love to whoever has been in this situation.

this and Erra's new album are top 2 for me so far. New born of osiris looks good too. Great year for music.
The piano and off beats are giving me chills...
Where other Prog bands go head forward, these fine guys go heart forward....brilliant song, fantastic album!
Best song on the album hands down. so good
Ah direct hit to the feels. So beautiful.
yeah man , the lyrics !!!!!!!!!!
All the track is a masterpiece..
Lowkey the best chorus of the album
Best song on the album imo. That outro guitar riff is incredible
This song still gives me shivers, absolute masterpiece from a massively under rated band. Absolutely love these guys.
God that outro, can't even describe how it makes me feel
Can we talk about how incredible this mix is?
Production and mix is flawless. Atmospheric as fuck yet sacrifices absolutely no punch.
Went yesterday to the show in Madrid and cried during the whole song. I am still thinking of that magic moment and will remember It for the rest of my life. Thanks Vola for doing what you do
This song hits all the right spots for me. Beautiful.
How can a song in 7/4 sound so smooth...no quick turnarounds and the drum accents are spaced perfectly, making it hard to notice at first.
3 bars of 7 then a bar of 8...then at the end its a bar of 7 and bar of 9 cycling...yet sounds smooth as fuck, prog done right
@@alexharper3666because of the 7 and 9 I just think of it as 4 measures of 4.
Its all how Adam accents those bass notes. Just brings it all together.

Album of the year for me!
I absolutely love this album and i am shocked that this isnt the top song
Its so hard to describe what this song makes me feel. grief, uncertainty, despair. But its beautiful
2:43 this part is so beautiful
This is, to put it quite simply, one of the most incredible things I've heard in a very long time.
Thanks Adam!

Would love a playthrough from Adam on this 😍

I’m loving the Katatonia influence. Amazing.
Katatonia was exactly what I was thinking Haha
Steven Wilson influence, too...
Exactly! If it was a blind audition, I would say it is Steven Wilson. However, this does not make the song worse...
Yes, yes this is Katatonia's lost song and it's astonishing.
Well... Steven Wilson influenced Opeth, and Opeth Katatonia... so yeah, they're all correct
BEAUTIFUL SONG. I LOVE SONGS THAT SOUND LIKE A MOVIE AND THIS SOUNDS LIKE THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE.
Criminally under rated cut from this album. My go to!
This song is like the dark side of Tesseract's lyrics in Tourniquet. Both songs are very moving, but this one is much harder to dwell on for too long.
Seeing these guys tonight!
Gunna be an out of body experience for sure.
Amazing band. Surely one of the most innovative of the today’s prog scene.

They sounded great live in Chicago last Friday
Harmonies at 3:40 are amazing
I don't know if I'll ever understand their lyrics, but god damn their songs are amazing.
I don't often understand their lyrics either, but this one definitely seems to be about losing a child or something similarly heartbreaking.
First time looking at the lyrics of this masterpiece...haven't expected something so sad😥

Is this about the loss of a child? Like an unborn child? I'm no good at deciphering lyric meaning.
Possibly. I have always thought that Alien Shivers was something like that.
