dont forget his willingness to sign autographs meet the kids take pictures, give away jerseys , buy familys dinner (saw this happen twice after a game at maple leaf gardens) . and a perennial playoff performer
I'm a Sabres fan and Toronto is our biggest rival.... and even I enjoyed watching Wendel play. He was tough, talented, and always played hard. Even as a rival, you have to respect that.
leaf fans really identified with clark because of his blue-collar work ethic and tough-as-nails physicality. he tried his best even when he was hurt. imo him and steve thomas were arguably the most popular leafs back in that time.
Amazing how much this city has changed since the 80/90s. Virtually unrecognizable. Both in and outside of hockey, none of those values that Clark stood for, are things that are admired in the city of Toronto today.
@@jayvardy understandable viewpoint, and i am not disagreeing with you. the great city of toronto has certainly changed in many ways since the 80's/90's.
that being said, can you explain what values (and why)(in and outside of hockey) are the ones that the city, and leaf fans admire today?
@@jayvardy It's actually so fitting that Toronto, a city that looks at its housing prices as a sign that it's on par with places like London, New York and Singapore, has this hockey team hamstrung by 4 giant contracts that aren't really paying off (Much like the McMansion in Mississauga)
@@catmelvin997 💯
Being 12 yrs old and living in northern ON when Clark was drafted, he became my hero - a superhero actually. I idolized him. Now that I am in my 40's, I laugh as Wendel is only 7 years older than me. But he will always be my hero.
As a Wings fan, just like with Chelios, even after hating the guy for years, it was great when he came to our team. Just wish we could've got that cup for him.
I've never actually looked at his stats and such. I didn't know that he missed so many games! Sucks he never got a Cup.
Love this man. They dont make hockey players like Wendel anymore. What a beauty.
Game 6 1993 Western conference finals, leafs one win away from going to Stanley cup finals. Leafs are down 2 going into the 3rd. Clark scores 2 third period goals to complete the Hat trick and take the game to overtime. We all know the rest but the captain my favorite player was clutch.
Wendel is god. And yeah, I’m still sore that Toronto/Montreal final never happened. Hands down, the Leafs best playoffs run of my generation.
@@matthewdaley746 the 2002 team that lost to Carolina was probably the best Leaf team since 1967. They got goalied by Irbe.
@@matthewdaley746 totally different season man. Thee run they were on they could've beat them
@@matthewdaley746 we could go back forth on this all day but the fact of the matter is noone will ever know who would've won that series
@@jayvardy I'm glad we lost then and not to Detroit in the finals. 02 Wings might be the greatest team ever.
Lol like 30 years ago 🤣
One of Don Cherry's favorites' along with Gilmour and Neely
You forgot Cherry's all time favorite. Bobby Orr
@@daved1535 indeed!
I didn’t realize that he only ever managed to play 1 full season in his whole career. I’m also surprised to see that he only had four 30 goal seasons given that his snap shot was lethal to say the least.
One of the toughest players in history. Went toe to toe with Probie. Love the guy.
Banged him out too! lol
Thanks for this. Clark was always fun to watch. He had a great wrist shot and boy, could he hit!
From Kelvington Saskatchewan!! My home town 😀😀
Don Cherry said no one messed with Gilmore because Clark put the fear of God in them. Leafs Legend.
The career review I've been waiting for! The man I'm named after. No joke. I was born into disappointment 😞
You could have been named Mats... lol
@@rockybalboa1847 right, my friend is named Matt after Mats lol.
@@wick3dx17x ... if you have any friends named .. Lucien or Dmitri ... their parents have a huge problem... lol
Your comment was pretty disappointing to be fair
@@ugiswrong that's what you parents have said about you. Go figure
Captain Crunch. The toughest, pound for pound.
Bro should be in the hall of fame
Sens fan but Clark was amazing despite my hatred of the Leafs. Nothing but respect for him. Anyone remember the Clark vs. Probert bouts? Holy! The size difference was obvious but Clark was tough!
At that time, if toronto was losing five, nothing was seventeen was looking for somebody For the big hit or the fight just to change the momentum of the game
I always despised the Leafs, but I always had great respect for Clark , pound for pound, one of the toughest guys to lace them up. One of my favorite memories, is the fight he had with Marty McSorley , they exchanged some serious blows. Clark shortened his career by the way he played, he played every game like it was last one, he never took a shift off.
Wendel was my idol as a kid. Fantastic guy and fearless. ✅. Great career vid analysis ✅
Thank you for doing this! So much I had forgotten over the years..you are rewarded with a sub and a comment!
I remember meeting him at an autograph signing at Part Source in Saskatoon when I was a young buck. My mom had to talk for me because I was so shy
My favorite Leaf player I meet him as a kid and everything I get Clark jersey and sign jersey to in my man cave me and my uncle meet him and i as a kid thanks for do this on Wendel Clark
It's funny how Wendel and Probert, the ultimate rivals, were teammates dressing for 6 games together in 1999-2000. I had forgotten about that until I looked it up now.
Robert Probert
Quebec/Colorado won too. Clark lead to Lemieux and Lefebvre was a big part of that first Cup team. So I think it ended well for them too.
Wings getting him in 99 had me psyched. Wings were going all in for the three-peat. I wish the Wings could have gone a little further.
Clark was a heck of a player, he could do it all and he played with heart. Imagine a player like him in the league these days, closest I can think of ovi, but ovi doesn't hit nearly as hard or as much as captain crunch did.
As a Red Wing fan I hated him when he played for the hated Maple Leafs in the Norris division but I always respected WC. Tough and could score. Some epic battles vs my Wings. I also forgot how many teams he played for. Sad injuries limited him so much.
You should do an episode on the Harrold Ballard ownership era of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was one of the most controversial owners in the NHL.Clarkie had some great bouts with Marty McSorely over the years. He wore his heart on his sleeve and that was why he was so beloved in Leaf circles.
He already has done an episode about Harold Ballard. While you’re at it you should check out Urinatingtree’s video on the Leafs titled “The Toronto Maple Leafs: A Half-Century of Failure”. It’s a good one but a long one so get the popcorn ready.
@@matthewdaley746 You bet. Lots of good one-liners and parts where you’ll laugh like a hyena.
@@kevinthegoalie1366 thanks for the information, the Ballard years were times terrible but with hilarious moments with his comments.I can’t imagine Ballard getting along with Gary Bettman.
@@cahg3871 I don't think those two would be fond of each other. He didn't even get along with his own staff. When he fired and then unfired Roger Nielsen, he asked poor Roger to put a paper bag over his head while coaching the next game. He also forced two of his general managers (Jim Gregory and Punch Imlach) out of their jobs without informing them in person.
@@kevinthegoalie1366 yep,Ballard was a difficult SOB.That time he told Nielsen to wear a bag over his head moment was on tv and the radio for days.Ballard loved the spotlight,he would make some of the most outrageous sound bites going. When he passed,it was a mixture of sadness and relief, depending on who you asked.
He literally left his heart on the ice in Toronto.
I was wondering if you could do a video documenting the careers of every player who was drafted with the very last pick in their draft year. I know Jacob Middleton and Patric Hornqvist had very successful careers in the NHL but I wonder if anyone else had some good stats in the AHL
Jonathan Ericsson
Brian Elliott was drafted second to last
My favorite leaf player ever!! One of the toughest to play..
There was no intimidating Wendell Clark. Boom, damn straight.
Leafs Legend, what a beauty.
WENDEL WAS AND IS MY FAVORITE PLAYER OF ALL TIME, SIGNED AUTOGRAPHS OUTSIDE CHICAGO STADIUM FOR ME, AWESOME PLAYER EVEN MORE A CLASS A GUY, SHOULD BE IN HALL OF FAME!!! #17
I understand Clark is a folk hero in Toronto for some I was born in 85’ started really watching hockey in 90-91 and I remember people loving him but I honestly never got it because he barely played compared to what he should have. His play style killed his career
Everyone of my friends dads labeled Wendel as the best Leafs player ever growing up. I never remember seeing him play while he was still in the league as i was 3 when he retired.
I still watch Number seventeen the best hits the best fights on youtube
Hard not to see the parallels between the Leafs and Clark in 1994 and the Canucks and Miller right now.
My favourite player of all-time!!
One of the worst trades ever made was sending Clark, Sylvain Lefebvre, Landon Wilson, and the 22nd overall pick in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft to the Nordiques.
In return, they got Sundin, Garth Butcher, Todd Wariner, and the 10th overall pick in the draft.
Prior to the trade the Leafs had made it to the third round twice in a row.
After the trade they didn't win another round for 5 years.
Garth Butcher gave the Leafs a year then retired while S. Lafavre went on to win a Cup and has continually been involved in Hockey.
They were tough to play against.
A few tweeks and they would have been contenders.
A big trade was not needed.
Wendel Clark Detroit and Chicago legend
Their playstyles might have been different but that table reminds me of Cam Neely aswell. Same era, lots of goals and lots of injuries...
Wendel Clark came to play every time he laced them up, that man did not fuck about. One word, Fierce.
God, I remember how many people LOST THEIR GODDAMN MINDS when Wendel Clark was traded for Sundin. There was all this griping about how "Euros don't go into the corners, they don't throw hits, and they don't show up in the playoffs." I still hear that shit from the old timers, and many of them are convinced that Sundin is the reason why the Leafs of the late '90s never won a Stanley Cup. It's ridiculous.
Mr. Cherry did dunk on Euro's a lot on Coaches Corner.
@@steveg1054 oh yeah, but he was a symptom of a much larger problem. The broader culture enabled him to become such a powerful figure.
Loathe the Leafs but Wendell Clark and Darcy Tucker too I had mad respects for!
I've always liked Darcy Tucker, I am glad he played for the Avs near the end of his career, he was just fun to watch, I grew up in a family of Leaf fans and I understood why they liked him as well.
@@SessionSakic He was fun to watch!
Tucker is pure evil.
Got his autograph when I was a kid. Legend 🙌
Tremendous player.
Wendel is the best!
For some reason I thought he played a few years with the Avalanche franchise. Also didn’t know he went to Toronto 3 times.
Clark feels like he played a lot longer than his 33 year old retirement age suggests
That's why he was one of the best captains toronto ever had
Really miss Wendel. My favorite Leaf.
Also a first cousin of Barry Melrose, which to his credit, Barry never hesitates to mention. That explains the fighting DNA.
I blame fletcher for the trade
Wendel wearing the Fish Sticks jersey lol
They don't make them like Wendel anymore. I never saw a guy who can go toe to toe with any player in the league and score like he did. As a Minnesota North Stars fan, the North Stars and Leafs had some battles and I remember Wendel being tough to handle
Can u do career video of Doug Gilmour.
He was my idol growing up as a teen in 90s.
80s Leafs were defined by Wendel. 90s Leafs were defined by Gilmour. Met him IRL and he's not a big guy at all. Super nice and pretty humble guy.
Mike keane career video could be pretty interesting!
That trade didn't turn out well for the Islanders either... Thanks Milbury...
Its weird that Clark played just 37 games with Quebec... cause I remember him with Toronto and Quebec and that's about it...
Keep your head up here comes 17...Clark I'm sure they got pounded
WOAH!... Captain Crunch!... Hero!
I was a kid in 1995 and saw Mats Sundin score an OT goal 6-seconds in against the Blues in STL. I remember looking up in the rafters during the face off and the next thing you know, it was over.
My uncle who took me to the game concluded on the ride home that Mats would be a star and the Maple Leafs made a great deal.
I cried I became a Montreal canadian
Never realized how Wendel Clark looks like Phil Kessel.
Wendell clark made hockey exciting At that time.
Mr. Wendel…. Campbell’s chunky soup 🎶
Danius Zubrus next!
Wendel STILL is God.
Cpt. Crunch baby 💪💪
Some say his hairline still recedes to this day
Wonder how much his play benefited by playing for Coach Brophy.
Missed you, you’ve been away for a while
thanks kerry fraser
No auto generated CC? I’m at the hospital so I didn’t want to turn the volume up. Maybe the video needs to upload more or something.
It takes time for UA-cam to add them. If he publishes a video a bit after he uploads it, the video may not have auto CC
Ah yes, Sundin for Clark. Don Cherry was very unhappy about it...for many years.
Clark for PM
Ate at rhis guys restaurant today
I dont remember him tampa chicago or detroit weird
Great video just wish you drew on a mustache 😔
My fav leaf ever #17
Best Leaf of all time... loved Clark... hate the leafs.
Toronto, short of gone for free agency at that time, instead of the trade, the trade you yanked the Heart right out of the city of toronto
One of the last hockey players to look like a man
Ah yes, Blackhawks legend Wendel Clark
Naw. New York Islanders legend :p
Just like Montreal legend Doug Gilmour
Bro was on all nhl teams💀
Where are todays signings?
Maybe a Matt Cooke carrier video?
Imagine the negative comments coming from that video
Wendel is God
Okay
Yeah, that trade you broke up the team with one player, I'm sorry.
It was never the same.
No you don't Criticize Clark is gonna break your face
Really amazing to be part of the losing side in every trade he was involved in in his career...
He essentially missed 10+ games a year when he had 200+ pims lol 1st liners play 20 mins a night × 10 = 200
🍴 or 🥄 🤣
I had forgotten the Leafs essentially traded Luongo for Clark, Schneider & Smith. How different is the next decade of hockey without that trade? I suspect the Vancouver Canucks look a lot worse without it.
Wendy!
My mom's name is Wendy and Wendel Clark is her favourite Leafs Player 😅
The thumbnail is Austin Matthews one year from now.
I forgot how overrated he was.
