240p Slow-motion on the Fujifilm X-S20, is it really that bad?

  • The Fujifilm X-S20 has been criticised for its 1080p 240 frames per second video footage, join me as I review in detail just what this little camera can do.
(Sorry about poor audio, I was tired when I edited this and set my mic input to powered, bad idea with the rode wireless go as its a powered mic!)

Thanks for the samples. I think the jerky stabilization when panning is normal. I shoot speedway and found a fluid head on the tripod with stabilization off works much better. Looks like good quality 240 fps is just very expensive to have.

I do have a fluid head and will give it a try, but sometimes you just have to hand hold! I find my Lumix cameras pan better, but the IBIS is better in those too, they are class leading with olympus!

Very informative video on the X-S20 240 fps slow motion. I am a hobbyist, helps me with my disability. The AF is good considering everything. You covered everything, so impressed with your work. I am doing slow motion of wildlife as well as continuous stills. My S5 is MF only at 180 fps. Putting your video through AI is a great idea. My goal is to go take stills of birds and animals, and be able to switch to 240 fps with same camera. Auto Focus is important to me. Appreciate you so much for taking time to do such an extensive review. Now seriously considering Fuji X-S20 with the 300mm telephoto lens. Thank you so much. Have a peaceful Holiday season.

The fuji has superb stabilisation with telephoto lenses, and is great. All of the shots I did for this video were hand held. Note that the higher frame rate at 240p helps stabilise the camera too, because of the huge number of frames that slow any movement down ten fold

Great in-depth video with useful examples, i found the discussion of the autofocus system particularly helpful. I agree that the video autofocus options in Fuji cameras are a little basic, but considering that the GFX 100 II finally adds generic video autofocus tracking it seems to be acknowledged.
If I understand it correctly, one problem is that in the high speed recording modes not all of the pixels of the sensor are used, but instead there is a lot of subsampling or line skipping involved to reduce the amount of data per second. This of course results in more moiré/aliasing and noise and worse dynamic range. You can see the aliasing artifacts in the high frequency feather details in the shown video clips. Full Frame cameras have to reduce data even more, so Micro Four Thirds cameras might have an advantage here in theory (but I've never used one).
There are not many cameras that even offer 240 fps video, so I consider it to be a very nice "bonus feature". The image quality may not be perfect, but I think most people will be impressed with the results. I've done some slow-motion clips of butterflies and bumblebees using the X-E4 and even with a cheap (used) XC 50-230 you can get amazing results that are more than good enough for social media. I probably takes a little more patience than with the X-S20 and its AI subject tracking and a better lens.

Ah, the GFX II is going to be an interesting camera. The X-S20 seems to have pretty good image quality and with a 1.29 crop in 240p I do not think its line skipped. If you watch the sample videos I included, especially from 5 minutes 25 seconds in, you'll see the quality is really good. In fact many say the 240p on the X-S20 is better than that of the X-H2s, which strangely has a 1.38x crop. I guess a smaller sensor area gathers less light, and its possible to reduce rolling shutter they have line skipped to get that to a minimum. In doing this, they have reduced quality, so ironically the little X-S20 has pretty good, for the money, 240p.

To add to this the crop on the X-S20 is only 1.29 in 240p and its not line skipped as it is on the X-H2S, so the little X-S20 is a marvel when it comes to 10x slowdown, a hidden gem!

Hi Natalie, When you mentioned 4K 120 fps, it got my brain thinking. Maybe I can use Topaz for Video and slow it down to 240 fps. Maybe I can look at Sony a6700 and/or Canon R8. Within price range of the X-S20. I have decision to make. Thank you so much for a really good video.

Its worth a trial of Topaz and watch @cameraconspiracies, who has done some fab reviews on this very software. The only issue with AI is its not perfect and if you intend to capture the exact wing movements, AI cant do that, it fudges the extra frames to approximate a 240p look.
The Sony A6700 has 4k120 and 1080p240, so is a viable option. The S5ii can manage 1080p120 with autofocus, but use cropped mode as only this is phase detect AF. There are some insane discounts on the S5ii and S5iiX at the moment and you can effectively pick up the camera for a similar price to the Fuji or Sony. However you lack the 240p, but you could keep the lens you have for L mount.
      Tough choices thogh
