Hey.. I'm 68 too.😊 I've been playing drums for a long time but this year I decided to learn the bass guitar 🎸 I just purchased my own instrument the other day. This lesson sounds great..working on getting it down.
WhooHoo! My musical Uncle bought me my 1st Bass on my 56th Bday. This year! Always been a rock star in air bass. lol. Lovin it so far! Play on me hardys!
Bro, I am a guitarist of 25+years and still picked up some usable info from this. Especially about note duration to the snare. I think watching other instructional vids for instruments you play around, even if you don't play, can be very beneficial for the interplay in a band. Nice video! 🤘🏻
I WATCHED THIS VIDEO ABOUT 12 MONTHS AGO WHEN I WAS FIRST RE-LEARNING THE BASS, THOUGHT IT WAS GOOD...............NOW I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE A COMMENT TO SAY I REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I HAVE LEARNT SINCE THEN AND NOW I AM REALLY HAPPY WITH MY PROGRESS, WITH A THANKS TO YOU
Thank you Andy, I mean Mr. Irvine, because today I got the blues gotta smooth it out though, practice makes funky and I smell it, thank you for this lesson I learned something today 😉. When you play bass every time you touch them strings you got to MAKE IT FUNKY!
Thank you, been learning the bass for less then a year, I have a Squire P Bass and just picked up a Ibanez P J Active Bass. This was truly an easy lesson and I hope to see more. Again Thank you.
Thanks a lot and congratulations for your clearness, soft and gentle demonstration. I ve enjoyed and lerned some slow blues techniques for playing the bass guitar.
Hi, pretty much a basic intro to blues for those less experienced players. Well explained and easy to understand compared to others on UA-cam. Will check out your channel, cheers.
The tip about ending the note just prior to the snare drum hit, was excellent ! (now I just need to find somebody with a snare drum !!) BTW, that trick about "pedaling" off the 1-note during the chromatic climb at the turnaround, was also really slick ! Aaaand, another edit: That little fill just after 3:25 was really tasty !! I keep returning to this video, it's chock full of great advice and insight (I've been playing bass a whole month now, but having played guitar for a few decades, I kinda hit the ground running. Nevertheless, I'm still like a deer in the headlights, half the time, LOL!)
I'm watching your left hand ... such a light touch and yet great tone, no buzzing, no dead notes. Is the light touch an illusion? Are you pressing as softly as it appears? Great lesson. Thanks.
The thing with the Bass Guitar is. You let the amp do all the work. That way when you play it. Your touch on the neck is soft. You don't have to bang it. If your looking at the hard metal. You would want to use the Scramble tone setting on the amp. For Example, The rumble sound, Ampeg has it on and off button, Fender makes the rumble amp, also they make the rumble cat bass guitar. It's the way you have your amp set to play. Then you can touch the plucking, and the neck soft. You should not have to pluck the strings hard. You see Andy with a soft touch. Makes playing the bass, without blisters on your fingers. Dude, you will enjoy playing much more. It takes all the work out of it.
Personally, I've not seen many Streamer's with a maple neck and inlays. That one looks Dyn-O-mite!! Sounds even better.. Andy's right too, let the snare drum "breathe," especially when recording.
Caution! Be very careful, once you actually ‘get it’ you may never leave. Many can play the blues but very few can feel it… Great explanation of the unexplainable!…
Still trying to get it, haha. I cna play from memory but just can't get the feel to make my own way. Blues bass is so easy to learn but hard to master.
Beautifully played and the explanation/analysis matches the playing. On the strength of this video, I've looked at TrueFire's offering and actually paid money (!!!) for a couple of courses. I think the original of this music is Goin' Home by Junior Wells on the album Better Off With the Blues - bass player Johnny Gayden.
Your cooel Andy. The way you teach slow, so people can learn. You have the camera and screen cut in different views. Looks professional, bro. Tell you them what notes. These guys teach on youtube tell the people number 4 fret. to second string 6th fret. They don't even say what note, bunch of asses. Hey, What you think of Trujillo going with Metallica? I love the way they have his playing gear listed on the Metallica website. I can't imagine what you have! Peace, Bro
Great job focusing on the less-is-more approach. And really nice tone. Perhaps you could release some of the root notes earlier - before the backbeat on the snare - to open things up. Finally, I realize you want this line to remain as uncluttered as possible, but maybe an occasional quick slide from 2-3 or b3-3 (when transitioning from root note to the third on beat 6) especially for the tonic chord. All in all very well done!
Sure that's all doable, nothing is written in stone here, all just suggestions from my perspective and in this one lesson video of hundreds I've done. Please, I encourage you to make lesson videos and share them with us all, so myself and others can learn from your experience and playing preferences.
and if you are going to teach, dont play with pro fingers, play with "this toy is for 6 and under" fingers. i can play bass for sure and looking for technique but the way you show it, i cant tell if you are reaching out to pros, inters but def not first timers
Hey Andy, I like your lessons but I have to comment on something you said. "All popular American music comes from the blues"? Uhh. .that's ridiculous. I love blues music, but the idea that field hollers that turned into that old timey country blues eventually spawned all popular American music is absurd. What did Americans play before the blues? So all we had was classical until the blues was invented, and then from that we were able to make popular music so we finally had something other than Beethoven and Strauss to play? Rock n roll was definitely influenced by the blues to varying extents, but there were other strong influences like country, folk, boogie woogie, etc. It's all just American roots music. Blues is just a part of it. The early 50's rock was twangy as hell. Rockabilly is country rock. White country pickers were the first shredders. . Of course all music evolves from what came before it and from what was around it when it was created. Blues is not an island unto itself. Southern black people didn't bring fully formed blues music from Africa. You have to consider the Euro-American music they heard in the South while developing it.
Been learning to play the bass since February of this year, been learning how to play this one for three weeks. Finally got it, i’am 68.

Nice. It was hard to follow because I don't read music but I can read tabs.
In any other video did you splain your right hand thumb technique?
I'm watching your left hand ... such a light touch and yet great tone, no buzzing, no dead notes. Is the light touch an illusion? Are you pressing as softly as it appears?
Great lesson. Thanks.
mongofan1 i think it's because his fingers are strong so he doesn't have to put much effort in, therefore looking "soft", effortless.

Very nice
Complicated!
Is it that hard to say what key you're playing in? Really?
Is it that hard to work out from the visuals that it's in G?
*Got you, it's in A.Hah!
6:09 is that hard to not listen when he tells ya the key? Really?
You are evil cheese
