Like most rapes. What evidence would you want -- the bloody underpants? People - men or women - don't disclose such shameful, horrid trauma easily. The damage left behind on one's life is enough evidence that something horrible has happened and if you look at the man, you'll see the damage.

And just because someone might have sexual tendencies toward s&m does not infer an assault predicated the inclination. There is no proof whatsoever that Lawrence was raped in Daara. We only have his word on it and Lawrence lied quite a bit. His own book is full of dubious claims. Michael Asher even managed to prove such. And if Lawrence shied away from this homosexuality for fear of societal reaction as you suggest then why dedicate Seven Pillars to S.A? And his fondness for Dahoum was quite public. We have to ask ourselves why we might deny Lawrence that particular mode of his sexuality anyway? If he did like masochism of some sort then what of it? Why must a violent incident be an excuse for such behavior? Doesn't it say more about us than him?
He was not perfect, but I believe what he did would have been impossible for anyone else.

Lawrence was born in Tremadoc, Caernarvon in north Wales.
He had Anglo-Irish aristocratic and Protestant lineage from his father.
The IRA's war began in 1919: the Arab Revolt ended in October 1918.
