Nice catch! I am happy to know that 4609 has not been scrapped yet and hopefully it will do some more yard work. I'd honestly much prefer CN to do that with it rather than scrap it
@@n2nitro444 looks like it's coming back your way. Judging by the set out, someone realized their mistake after you guys gave them a call and sent the unit back your way.
Yeahh, I remember hearing rumors about you guys getting it, and then CN sent it out from storage into service at the yard there to I guess run it into the ground more? Gotta love good ol' CNR sometimes...
Looks like it got sent back to Prince George on that last train. Judging by the set out, someone realized they made a mistake and corrected it when the engine's new owner gave them a call asking them what's up.
As best I can tell, it also ended up out of Prince George back about six months ago. My father saw it at the head end (Lead locomotive, according to him) of an intermodal heading into Vancouver. But by the time I could get back into Vancouver to see it, it had already departed. I assumed it ended up back to Prince George to shunt the yard, but evidently it's had some more final adventures. I HOPE that rumour you'd heard about it getting donated is correct. I think one got donated, one of CNs own units, but I'd like to see this lone survivor saved too.
Alberta Railway Museum has a preserved cowl unit, CN BCOL 4618, a GE C40-8M. From their website, “The most recent addition to the Alberta Railway Museum, CN BCOL 4618 was built by General Electric in the early 90s. It was among a class of locomotives with Canadian features as standard. The first is the full width reinforced cab. Dubbed the “Canadian Comfort Cab”, it also increased crew safety. The C40-8Ms are also the last locomotives with the full width “Draper Taper” style body, named for CN’s assistant chief of motive power at the time, William L. Draper. 4618 served with BC Rail until it was bought by CN in 2003. It was then repainted and served CN until 2023.”
I only ever got to see one BC Rail cowl unit. It was in 2016 from something like a quarter mile away. Even though my shot was atrocious, I’m still glad I got to see one. Great catch!!
I’m returning from a Florida trip and I’m racing this thing back up to catch it, my stress levels are increasing with this video, it’s luckily it’s not getting scrapped, it’s rotting in storage instead, so we can get pictures of it before CN rots it, wish my luck, praying CN gets delayed and holds this up. I was too late to catch cowls so this would make my year if I saw it
Holy shit i saw it too when i was at my field trip Holy Moly @The Winnipeg Railfan i saw the J & E 672 and it was trailing by Cn Dash 9 and he was sitting at Transcona Yard
I thought they got rid of these 3 years ago… Surprised CN Still Used Them In mainline Service A couple years Ago They lasted a good While Ngl… Overall glad to know these Still exist Overall will it be scrapped or saved by a museum?
That GWWD alco needs its Holden M3H horn retuned badly! It sounds on only one chime! M3H horns are my all-time favorite train horn. They were fairly common when I was young, but they are very rare now. It should be preserved! Of course, the 4609 should be preserved!
That's neat. I have no connection to that engine or BC but agree it should be save if it's the last. Maybe the museum is frantically calling CN asking what's up? in a polite way perhaps.
I have seen more cowl units than that elusive GWWD, those guys must dispatch using a calender, seen it move onece in 10 yrs. I have been trainwatching.
Weekday mornings like monday, thursdays around 10am are a good bet to catch them at least doing their short water treatment plant run, then they return anywhere from 1-3pm depending on CN traffic. This one was an oddball run, they must've left at like 7-8am as they were already done by 11am
The company still owns trackage. The BC Rail Port sub between Langley and Robert’s Bank. There was a conflict of interest during the sale of BC Rail. So if you’re ever in British Columbia, you will hear the BC rail Port Sub being called on the radio. They have a few RTC‘s. MOW guys and one truck and that is the extent of their employees and equipment.
Do you think 4609 has made it into the states yet? I’m live in a small town in central Wisconsin near CN’s Superior subdivision and I would like to catch this beauty.
There's still one preserved at the edmonton railway museum but I'm not to sure of its operational,it's a ex bcol c-40cm and I think the road number is 4618

It’s supposed to go to Prince George I’m pretty sure on display. Istg if they don’t donate it I’ll be pissed.
As the guy at the museum in Prince George. Yeah we were supposed to get it but they pulled a CN so it doesn't get saved.

We shall see what happens. My uncle who works at the LRC had no idea what the deal was. Truly think it was a mistake/ short on power.
@@Opinionatedguy1989oh okay, that is good to hear.
So it is getting saved?
PRESERVATION. It must be Preserved.

That's crazy 🤣

bc rail is the goat
@ Fr!! The best!
Hopefully they Preserve this Engine since it still wears the Original Livery like with her fellow Cowl 4618 which is in CN Colors.
4609 just retired? Dang, I’m glad that C40-8M lived throughout almost year of 2024!

BC Rail 4609 passed through Brandon about 2 weeks ago
with a empty grain train going to Mayfield Sask.
My buddy in town saw that unit, It was the 4642 apparently that was out there for a few days
Man that SD38 was giving all it got
Amazing Video👍

Simply awesome that you caught 4609! Such a rare locomotive to catch. ❤👍🏻😎
Nice work and good catch that is the rarest thing you will see before it goes away into the scrap yard
Ngl I am praying that they save that unit! BC rail is the best!

Since Canadian National is considering preserving 4609, Now can we get IC 2466 in preservation CN

@@TheWinnipegRailfan will remember next time I head into the city. thanks.
Right on 🔥
It’s sad because I used to see bc rail dash 8s in Ontario like everyday back in 2019. Now, most of them are gone.
Hopefully, this joins the C40-8's and IC SD70s that are currently based out of Markham/Kirk Yard. But I will be happy if this is preserved
2 years ago by the royal mint , i seen 2 dash 8s and a blue devil but its prime mover was taken out
Yup, BCOL 4611 was one, and IC 2463 was the one with no hood, they were scrapped late last year
Watching this in social studies, I had to watch since its BCRail, I also missed it because it came through Rivers at 5am 😭
Skill issue
@CentralManitobaRailfan ok.
imagine they put 403 and 4609 together...
Man i qualified as a engineer on 5949 back in 2015!
That sd38 sounded epik
So cool, i always wanted to see a cowl unit but of course cn won't send one down to Quebec
4609 and 2427 duo when
Hey Winnipeg could you make a petition to save 4609 from being scrapped so it could be sent to the Railway Museum of BC?
Not everyday you see a Dash 8.
I am a certified BC rail foamer
"Mitä helvettiä? Voi luoja, ei mitenkään, joo joo..."
So I found out BC Rail Still Operates to this day, but operated by CN under lease.

Later in the video it shows the unit was dropped
@ I know, but like has it been decided that it’s staying there or is it being moved down south to Homewood or somewhere else?
I would sign it

Algoma Central was a good one, until Wisconsin Central gutted it.
