Plus so many “uninteresting” people online are genuinely more interesting offline, you just get the selection bias of only being shown the people who share interests with you online which in the real world is a much smaller group of people compared to the masses
I think it has to do with the fact that when you accept your inherent uncoolness, you totally lose the kinds of comparisons that would make a wannabe cool-guy feel insecure and then do a bunch of lame attention-seeking stuff trying to hit on whatever they have imagined people will most like. The 'be yourself' thing is generally true. The more comfortable you are, the more sincere you are able to be in your experiences and reactions, the more people will generally want to see and hear from you. The coolest people of all time are the most effortlessly themselves of anyone around them, and that's what makes them cool. You can count on them to bring out new and interesting stuff like nobody else. It's an individual thing, can't be duplicated. You can't write a step-by-step on how to be cool, point to examples of different notable people's styles and tastes and use those as a leg up. People know it isn't the same and I think sometimes it even makes them less trusting of you. And honestly yeh... if you think you're cool, chances are you aren't as cool as you think. That's really for more reasons than fit in 10 youtube comments lmao Cool people can be super passionate, present, invested... but they tend not to put it on the table all at once. Probably because they don't feel a need to. They don't need people to know every potentially interesting thing about them, but instead let it hang there like a vibe like "Hey, if this is interesting, you can probably get more of this out of me." "Coolness" to me is just a feeling that you have when you're around or watching certain people at certain times. Everything else is just another layer of mental narrative. You can't really pin it down to one thing, our minds just want everything to be like that cause we are natural pattern-seekers. At most, I think it's a culmination of how you see yourself, and how that translates in how you actually come off. People can sometimes sense comfort and authenticity, just as they can tell when the skin your wearing doesn't quite fit. It's like a cycle, because people look at that one cool person and then want to be like them. They look at the specific behaviors, style, mannerisms, movements, taste, what have you... ...just hoping that somewhere in those things is the thing that actually makes that individual cool... ...try to imitate the cool person as much as they possibly can, and totally miss the forest for the trees. I think partially, it comes down to a lack of curiosity and self-confidence. Someone who is self-confident and curious will generally come off as cool, no matter what specific things they're into. It's cool because it's THEIR thing and they made it that without anyone telling them to do it. They are doing it cause they just like it, or came up with something they thought had some value, and thus aren't so much thinking about how cool it is to other people because they believe in it. They only show you because they think it's cool, not because they think you think it's cool, or that other people think it is cool. The lames do it because a cool person is doing it. Nobody likes a tryhard. I mean, I think it's cool to have role models nstuff. But I also think that you should expect to one day not need them... or more that if you grow as your own person, a day will come when they can't meet your needs. Honestly, its for your own relationships and well being more than anything else. Often people who seem cool are not worth taking after and actually have terrible character beneath the veneer. There's a reason they say to never meet your heroes. I prefer "nothing sacred, nothing lost." I use all of these terms to get points across, but I don't see cool and uncool people. I just see a bunch of messy, deeply flawed individuals. I think a lot of what people believe about coolness is just an illusion, again... not a state of being, or a real place that a person can occupy. It's individualized and idiosyncratic, and nobody gets to be cool all of the time. If you don't believe me, you just haven't seen them when they weren't cool, or even when they think they aren't being watched. I think for a lot of people, 'cool' is less a state of being and more a common sense of self to fold into and make friends. You will find these people all over music scenes - they're the ones who go hardest on the identity aspect of consuming music. Some of them are genuinely the coolest people, but you'll know them by how unique their expression of those otherwise shared tastes immediately is. Is it something that is personally meaningful to them, for their own reasons... like, in a way where they organically became this person by just following passion and curiosity? Or are they just here to absorb the things that a subculture deems 'most safe' from a coolness perspective? Superficially they can look similar, but they're VERY different sets of internals. Most of them that I have personally met, have bored me to tears. When it comes to the interests they portray, I just find they have nothing to talk about outside of whatever is hot in the subculture, as though they have no thoughts or views of their own. You almost never catch them bringing up anything their subculture isn't already rolling with. They just feel very 1-dimensional. I'm sure there's an interesting person in there somewhere, but that person is presently too preoccupied with impressions and other people's expectations of themselves. The question is, when you're alone, is this stuff still cool to you? Will you care this much about it when it stops being trendy to be into? I like to think that's just a growth phase for a lot of people, but it's an especially annoying one. Because as they build that cool identity, they become more and more insistent on the acknowledgement from other people... which is the first sign that you're probably not very cool. Everybody likes a little acknowledgement, but I think it starts to morph into something else when significant parts of your outward identity contain the things that get you the most acknowledgement. That signals to me a person who isn't very comfortable with themself. And you know what? I think there are a lot of so-called 'cool' celebrities and artists that fall into this category.
