- I demonstrate how I tuned my accordion so that you can play Arabic tunings in non-equal temperament. There are lots of videos out there of great players but not much on how to actually tune your accordion this way. Hopefully this will be informative.
You are very talented sir! Would love to get to this point with my Diatonic Hohner
Lucky man. What a nice world to live in! Congrats...
Cool stuff
Very cool video. i used to detune cordions a while ago. Used Crazy Glue a tiny drip and a grain of sand or 2. and then file them till you get your correct tone.
Yeah I used to file but with this method you can take off the metal if you want to revert to your original tuning, with no change to the actual reed.
@@ericstern8386 some luthier in Egypt and arab world use WAX (beeswax) for 1/4 tone tuning, easy to adjust, and remove when desired.
Update, Im halfway done converting an old hohner imperial to modern 440hz...just need to buy some solder for the quarter tones. I have another 12 bass hohner I'll be doing a different maqam. I'm also dry tuning it...works for most Fayruiz and especially early 90s Syrian music with that old Yamaha psr-82 "accordion" patch.
I so exited to find this video... I am researching the options of Arabic tuning
and playing on a regular accordion, and happy to hear it is possible... can I contact you in email? Thanks a lot..

Very nice video. I have a question, what register is the most frequently used in arabic music (clarinet, basoon, master). Thanks in advance.
Well, musette, or basoon plus clarinet or ANY low/high combo.
What are some arabic songs you can play on a regular tuned accordion? I scored a sixties mint 120 bass Scandalli Silvania from ebay 2 months ago but haven't had the courage to add quarter tones yet
Lots: Aziza. Raks Leyla. Nassam Aleyna. Lamma Badda. Just keep listening so that after awhile your ear will be able to tell if there are quarter tones.
@@ericstern8386 الفنان جورج وسوف ههه. George wassouf lol. My Arabic is getting better so I'll see if I can find posts online pertaining to different methods of tuning.
if I would send you an accordion could you tune it for me in 'Rast/bayati?
im thinking about getting a 30s hohner piano accordion with no switches with two medium reeds per note and making it so on the push of the bellows its a quarter flat. i know it wouldnt be true maqam but it would be the same as playing an oriental keyboard, which i plan on getting soon. so i take it for the 1st medium reeds id tune it to perfect pitch plus -25 cents on the push reeds while taking in the fact id need to compensate for what the concert pitch is. on the mussete reeds id follow the formula of seperating the keyboard into 4 sections of varying cent increases for the tremolo, while at same time lower the pitch for the quarter tones. also as for adding solder, what side of the reed is solder added?
btw this accordion will be solely for arabic music.
Not sure I completely understand the entire question, but solder on the outside reed, to push for a quarter-tone. For e half flat I tune the e down, not the d# up, but you could tune the d# up if you wanted to go that route. Same for the b. For the a 1/2 flat I tune the g# up. In terms of cents for tuning e down I tune it down 30 cents if I want a more rast feel, 40, for beyati. Some people tune it down 50 cents.
I actually just purchased an old hohner marchesa 41/120 key off ebay for cheap. The accordion needs tuning but from what I read it won't be too hard since it has LM dry tuning. Thanks for the video
If you were in my case where you had a LM configured 41 key accordion with a low, medium and master switches, which notes would you tune lower/higher than western counterpart? Would every key on the push of the bellows be tuned differently or just a select few used that are the maqams I can fit on the layout? I ask because yes bellows technique is very important on let's say a button accordion but triplets with quartertones sound a little intimidating.
@@lukealexander3639 Well at :55 I explain that I think! DON'T retune every note. I just retuned three. You'll find that this gets you far. As for triplets you won't be able to play them with the bellows going in and out on the 1/4 tone but you can use your fingers to play them.
excellent, Mr. Eric, what are the notes you use to make 1/4 tone? as you mentioned E, B, and A#, are there any other notes so you can play all the (makamat) in arabic music? thank you for your attention, and your video is really very good.
Well this is the basic model, which I can tell you as someone who gigs a lot, you can actually get away with most of the (Arabic) repertoire. However, it is true that you can expand and use more notes, but it starts to be limiting in other ways. In the end there's no real replacement for an oud, say, but those three notes get you pretty far.
Actually if you have more reed banks you can expand more easily without the constant direction change limiting you. Just not on a smaller model like this one.
@@ericstern8386 sorry for the delay to respond. thank you very much for your kind reply. Your tremolo register seems to be off tune.
Nope. That's the musette tuning.
