This is part of the reason that Belters have the utilitarian ethical philosophy that they do because they recognize an old Heinlein saying that "stupidity is the only universal capital crime and that the sentence is meted out immediately and without mercy."
This was mind-blowing reading it in the novel and mind-blowing watching it on the show (even though I knew it was gonna happen!). I love this show. (I don't remember if the show has said it, but Miller's first name is Josephus).
I remember legit getting vertigo from watching this episode when Miller was looking out/down after landing on Ceres and when the Navoo sored "overhead"
Joe Miller, but *actually* Josephus Miller...people have a ton of Roman names in the expanse (his old female partner's first name is *Octavia* , Fred is actually Frederick *Lucius* Johnson...) , but not always obvious at first sight - it's generally very Roman with the UN-ruled Earth the late Empire, bloated and an echo of it's former glory, the MCR the early Republic, young, aggressive, assured in the righteousness of it's cause and so on... Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
I like to think Fred is just amused by Holden's reaction to Miller and his plan, because he's just recently been in Holden's place himself, as an 'in universe' justfication for the smirk.
The temporary thrusters they move The Nauvoo with are tugs. Just like we need tug boats to move large ocen vessels when docking because they can't easily make the incremental movements needed you would have the same problem for a large space vessel.
Josephus Miller. Your “I wonder if” and “wouldn’t it be crazy if” are fantastic. I came up with some pretty wild wonderings between episodes, seasons, and eventually book released.

"The stars are better off without us" Miller and his lines ❤ I've always said that though. Well... My version was always more like "humanity should probably be eradicated before we make it too far out into the stars. Potato/Potato (same pronunciation) 🤷🏾♂️
Well, there's some mistakes with both, 1. the stars don't care and 2. "Should" is an egotistical myth which is one of the many reasons why we human suck.
Greetings from a fellow Ontario resident! You best buckle up for next week's episode and get the juice ready, too. A true stand-out episode from a series that produced some of the best entertainment this nerd has ever seen. Also, his full name is Josephus Aloisus Miller.
Holden wasn't so much worried about information about the protomolecule getting out so much as he was about the protomolecule itself getting out. They found one person in the airlock covered in protomolecule. That was supposedly a relief ship, sending medics to help people, even if it was journalists trying to find out what happened, how likely do you think it is it that the ship sent just one person in there? Even if they did, I doubt they'd leave before finding out what happened to the only person the sent? If there was more than one, and at least one of them was doing even remotely ok, they'd have carried him back. No, if there was one person in the airlock covered in protomolecule, that means there was an entire team covered in protomolecule and they had to leave one of them behind. That ship had to be destroyed. The only thing I dislike about Earth is that it's infested with humans, so maybe a place where humans can't live might be better.
it's even worse than not knowing how which way Eros would steer if they tried again with the Nauvoo. Did you notice how Miller didn't realise the huge asteroid he was sitting on moved at all? He didn't feel anything. And Miller's first name is Josephus, often abreviated a Joe.
3:00 "It's the right thing to do." Works EVERY TIME on Holden." 17:57 Unfortunately, killing civilians to insure quarantine was the right thing to do...
24:00 They are Belters, they don't waste stuff. You can be sure the Nauvoo did have exactly the amount of fuel that it needed. So they can not just turn it around and bring it back. It will run out of fuel soon after missing Eros and stay on its trajectory with the speed it had at the end.
I think the idea is they just used the tugs to give the Nauvoo a push so that it would head straight at and knock Eros toward the Sun. So it would only have fuel to course correct.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps Nah, that wouldn't make sense. This is not space-billiard. ;) The Nauvoo is pretty small compared to Eros by size, and even more so by mass. I can't do the math, but it's doubtable that it would even be possible to alter Eros' orbit with a ship like that. So the only way to give it enough impact that it could work, if ever, is giving it the highest possible velocity. So they would let it burn like hell for the whole trip. The tugs were there to get her at a safe distance from Tycho before starting the engines. Otherwise they would have melted the station. We even see them starting the Nauvoo's huge engines after the tugs left.
@@madux42 Well, it's space-billiard either way. And if the mass is not big enough, wouldn't they instead just get a bunch of regular ships to pick up more speed quicker and ram Eros at the same time?
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps They used the Nauvoo because it was the biggest ship ever built, with a very powerful engine. Also I'm not sure if they had a bunch of spare ships and/or would be willing to crash them. Anyway, it seems obvious they had to give the Nauvoo as much power as possible by speeding it up as much as they could. That's defenitely not done with only an initial push from the tugs.
@@madux42 @madux _"They used the Nauvoo because it was the biggest ship ever built, with a very powerful engine."_ That's not really an answer to my question since that argues for the "throw a big enough thing at Eros and it will head into the Sun". _"Also I'm not sure if they had a bunch of spare ships and/or would be willing to crash them."_ It's not a question of _spare_ ships since the Nauvoo is not a spare ship either and it seems Johnson would have enough pull to simply call in and buy enough ships. _"Anyway, it seems obvious they had to give the Nauvoo as much power as possible by speeding it up as much as they could. That's defenitely not done with only an initial push from the tugs."_ That's a circular argument though. If the plan is for the Nauvoo to acccelerate a lot and, well, the tugs are not enough and you just replace the If with Obviously... well, yeah. You're probably right that the tugs were just used because Tycho has them and it's somehow easier/quicker to use them than to just have the Nauvoo position itself for take-off.
There’s a lot of weird on the junk in orbit, because that junk could be recycled into useful materials and the expensive part, getting it into orbit, is done.
So here's the fun thing about the Mormon/Nauvoo situation: The Mormons already paid for the ship. That's why it's already built. It's one of the most expensive undertakings in human history. The Tycho corporation was not going to build it for them on credit. And the Mormons are going to pissed for sure. EXTREMELY pissed. But there's essentially nothing they can do about it. It was technically the OPA that commandeered the ship, which is basically the closest thing that the Belt has to a government. But the OPA does have its own system of laws and courts, and they don't recognize the legitimacy of Earther courts out in their territory. So, the Mormons could try to sue the OPA for their ship back, but the OPA would just laugh and ignore them. And the Mormons have no power to enforce such a ruling. So they're basically just out a few trillion dollars or however much it cost to build the Nauvoo. Also, EROS MOVED!!! A body that has been orbiting our sun for billions of years just suddenly changed course!!! Yeah, it's a HOLY-FUCKING-SHIT moment!!! And yeah, I agree with you guys that this show has a strong cosmic horror element. The authors of the original books cite "Alien" as one of their biggest inspirations for this story. And it shows. Can't wait for the next episode!!! P.S. Miller's first name is Josephus

You're going to have your imagination lit on fire, your entertainment values gain new limits, as this series is one of the best I've ever watched in my entire 54 years on planet Earth. You might want to watch and react two or three a week from here on out, because the suspense and drama will eat your prefrontal cortex for breakfast. :)
Blessed with two episodes in the same week? you're spoiling us silly
This is part of the reason that Belters have the utilitarian ethical philosophy that they do because they recognize an old Heinlein saying that "stupidity is the only universal capital crime and that the sentence is meted out immediately and without mercy."
They also understand the Cold Equations.
This was mind-blowing reading it in the novel and mind-blowing watching it on the show (even though I knew it was gonna happen!).
I love this show.
(I don't remember if the show has said it, but Miller's first name is Josephus).
The launch of the Nauvoo and Eros's WTF moment are some of my favorite sequences in the entire series. It was so well done.
Best regards
Raoul G. Kunz
His full name is Josephus "Joe" Aloisus Miller. But everyone just calls him Miller.
So good. What a great reaction to a truly great episode. Cannot wait for the next one, one of the best episodes of TV ever put to screen.
this is the episode that solidified the fact that IT WAS A PLAYTHROUGH OF A TTRPG! ... nothing ever goes to plan when rolling dice!
Star Wars was a long time ago... so you can open doors with blasters back then. But that doesn't work in the future...
"The past is like a foreign country. They do things differently there."
yes - two expanse episodes in the same week!
Josephus Miller.
Your “I wonder if” and “wouldn’t it be crazy if” are fantastic. I came up with some pretty wild wonderings between episodes, seasons, and eventually book released.
Fun fact, Millers revolver is a Chiappa Rhino, the same model as Harley’s Love/Hate revolver.
This show cemented in my very soul that I will NEVER go up the gravity well and in to the void. F That
That guy on the Mirasmus would totally be the kind of guy who'll spend 6 months backpacking across Africa to "find himself."
The next episode is one of my favorite things ever
Great reaction guys!
Like someone has already said in the comments, you have no idea where this is going! Buckle up cause this ride is fixing get crazy!
Looking forward to the next one!
I hope we don't have to wait a whole week for it though...... that's just cruel
"The stars are better off without us"
Miller and his lines ❤
I've always said that though.
„I think there’s one little piece of the puzzle that we’re missing.“
😅😂❤❤
Greetings from a fellow Ontario resident! You best buckle up for next week's episode and get the juice ready, too. A true stand-out episode from a series that produced some of the best entertainment this nerd has ever seen. Also, his full name is Josephus Aloisus Miller.
The cliffhangers just keep comin', after this.
And it gets even more terrifying, Real Soon Now (tm).
It's Josephus Aloisus "Joe" Miller.
20:16 well said lol the last piece happened to be the planet moving on its own😂😂😂😂it tripped me out so much when I first saw it
Holden wasn't so much worried about information about the protomolecule getting out so much as he was about the protomolecule itself getting out.
Good lord, how is Nerdy going to survive the next episode?
it's even worse than not knowing how which way Eros would steer if they tried again with the Nauvoo. Did you notice how Miller didn't realise the huge asteroid he was sitting on moved at all? He didn't feel anything.
And Miller's first name is Josephus, often abreviated a Joe.
3:00 "It's the right thing to do." Works EVERY TIME on Holden."
17:57 Unfortunately, killing civilians to insure quarantine was the right thing to do...
Girl. Your hair is always so luxurious.
In this episode we learn more about Jules Mao and Errinwright and just a touch about Millers motivation it just gets better from here.
"You think it will head right for Earth?"
"No!"
that aged well...
This series is a great ride, keep going with it as it gets better and better.
This is not space-billiard. ;)
The Nauvoo is pretty small compared to Eros by size, and even more so by mass.
@@madux42 @madux _"They used the Nauvoo because it was the biggest ship ever built, with a very powerful engine."_
That's not really an answer to my question since that argues for the "throw a big enough thing at Eros and it will head into the Sun".
_"Also I'm not sure if they had a bunch of spare ships and/or would be willing to crash them."_
It's not a question of _spare_ ships since the Nauvoo is not a spare ship either and it seems Johnson would have enough pull to simply call in and buy enough ships.
_"Anyway, it seems obvious they had to give the Nauvoo as much power as possible by speeding it up as much as they could. That's defenitely not done with only an initial push from the tugs."_
That's a circular argument though.
They were trying to use the Nauvoo to knock Eros out of a stable orbit to crash into the Sun eventually. If Eros can move on its own...
Eros: "Dodge, duck, dip, dive and... dodge"
There’s a lot of weird on the junk in orbit, because that junk could be recycled into useful materials and the expensive part, getting it into orbit, is done.
his full canon name is Josephus Aloisus Miller. shorted Joe Miller.
OH DANG you guys did two Expanse vids in a week; that earns you a sub from me! So glad you're loving the show.
Detective Josephus "Joe" Miller.
I love this show soooo much
Miller's first name is Josh!
This is show is soo good. You can never say that enough
Two per week!!!! Please please!
Shit is about to get real.
I always hoped that the Belters hooked up the Mormons with a sweet logistics contract after season 3 to pay them back.
Just remember the most important thing about space: No one can hear you scream!
Miller's first name is Josephus but he goes by joe
The thrusters are tug drones. So flipping cool.
Imagine the Insurance Claim on the Nauvoo.... Grand Theft Starship policy anyone?
Miller is now the Nuke Punisher.....
Next episode is a banger, looking forward to seeing you guys enjoy!
Next episode is my favourite of the series. Season 3 it's my favourite season but 2ep5 is brilliant!
I don't know if the Nauvoo has enough fuel to turn around other than huge arcs that take years to maneuver.
Josephus Miller... aka Joe Miller
Love your excitement ❤,welcome to the expanse!
