Why (only) some Sharks are Warm-Blooded

  • Sharks have the reputation of being cold-blooded killers that will attack and try to eat just about anything. But in reality, they are actually a lot pickier than many people realize - Attacks on humans are very very rare. But even the "cold-blooded" portion isn't even true - at least not when it comes to Great Whites. Because they are in fact part of a small group of sharks that can elevate their body temperatures above the water temperature - effectively becoming warm-blooded. Here's how they do it.

Part 2 will be released in 1-2 months. For now, I wanna do other topics.
Also: This is one of the first videos where I didn't cover a story (so to speak) but more of a scientific concept, which required a more minimalistic animationstyle. I just hope it wasn't too dry.

it should be noted that their are some noteworthy advantages to ectothermy as well. The primary one is that, due to not spending energy to maintain body temperature, they can afford to burn fewer calories as their resting rate than a similarly sized mammal.

I wish UA-cam would develop some algorithm that would either put all repetitive comments in one or just have a set number or % of the comment allowed to be of the thing being said over and over.
Then one wouldn't have to scroll through the %85 if the redundant ones in this video. It makes it difficult to find the comments actually related to the subject of the video. Which is really cool and intriguinging. Worth commenting on and discussion. While Roblox can be talked about on Roblox videos. Yes, every Roblox player noticed the noise. Now, how bout them sharks? Them hot heated sharks.

Works very similar to how heat retention was shown in the video.
here are a few points you can google if you want to find out more:
      "nephrons countercurrent"
      "Countercurrent multiplication"
      "juxtamedullary nephrons"

  • @rbrambaldi

It is really cool to see the that the countercurrent principle seems to be a evolutionary solution to so many challenges these species have. I know that humans have a countercurrent multiplier in the kidneys, to help with filtration. Wonder if there is a more efficient system than this one...

Note there are some other mesothermic animals (mesotherms being the term for animals that fall in between endotherms and ectotherms) Leatherback Sea Turtles are Mesotherms for instance as well and while it is far harder to tell for extinct species archosaurs show signs of a mesothermic to endothermic past though that is still an active area of study.
Additionally it isn't a one way street to endothermy as there are evolutionary pressures that have lead to the loss of temperature regulation. Modern crocodilians show many vestigial signs of having arisen from ancestors with regulated internal temperatures such as a vestigial 4th heart chamber. And several groups of modern mammals have lost endothermy such as naked mole rats and 3 toed sloths.
