Feigning incompetence is a great aid to pretext. In fact, I suspect almost all of my managers are impostors as they've been feigning incompetence for years.

Really cool idea to draw parallels between social engineering in a real-life setting and social deception in video games.
There are a lot of games which use social deception and social deduction as a core mechanic. Board games (or other in-person games) especially help with developing social deception skills because you are forced to control your body language and nonverbal communication if you want to successfully deceive your friends, in addition to quickly inventing alibis and establishing trust.
One aspect of these games that differentiates them from real-life situations is that in these games, everybody is aware that somebody is trying to fool them and they are trying to actively seek out the liar/impostor/traitor/etc. I would argue that this causes players in these games to delve deeper into alibis and pretexts, analyzing statements and actions to a much greater degree than an office worker or security guard might in a real-world scenario.

A'll of this reminds me of the behaviour we see in The Big Brother houses around the world. People are doing these things to each other and some don't know they're doing it. They get manipulated by the games they are forced to play in order to stay in the game, and win! Thanks for this video, cheers

Would love to see a whole game where you employ these tactics!

I had a lot of fun with Amongus before it went mainstream enough to mostly be played by morons and children (also morons, but not their fault, lol). The best games were when you could get a game going with a big friend group, because you all know each other a little better. I played around with gaslighting to the point of creeping myself out.
By far, the whackiest play I ever made... So, I let the other imposter do most of the kills till he got caught, and voted off. I even voted him off myself because I saw him get caught, and there was no saving him with how many witnesses there were, so I went along with the crowd in arguing him out. To his credit, he was a good sport and didnt do me in, he knew why I was doing it.
In fact, I dont think I made a single actual kill that game, I just... Started f@cking with people's heads after that guy was voted out.
Down to 4 people, I talked two of them into voting a third off over "suspicious behavior"... Now, I didnt know this at the time, but at that point, I could have just killed one of the two remaining people and won instantly. For some reason, I thought I'd have to kill them both, which seemed risky.
So instead... I hung out with my friend. Just followed her around for a while. I basically decided I didnt want to kill her in particular. But she gets suspicious and hits the button and basically says "Why are you just following me and not doing tasks".
Heres the thing... I'd been following her for like 4 or 5 minutes, but despite having numerous opprotunities, never killed her. So I just told her I was doing what I usually do when the numbers get that low, just stick around someome as safety in numbers, and watch while they do tasks (which is true, I do that even when I wasnt imposter). I told her I had all these opprotunities to kill her but didnt, so I couldnt be the imposter. Meanwhile, the other guy kept screwing off, probably was the imposter, and just couldnt pick one of us off because we were sticking together.
She was so suspicious though, because I talked them into voting the other crewmember off previously, and she actually paid attention to the task progress bar, which kept moving even when neither of us were doing tasks (meaning the other guy really must be a crewmember).
... Bro, I feel bad about this. I was trying to be nice by not killing her, but straight up, I think I did something 10 times worse, because in order to not kill her and still win, I gaslit the sh@t out of her for like 5-10 minutes that it MUST be the other guy, because I had so many opprotunities to kill her and get away with it (straight up, I stuck to her for so long just to build HER up as the alibi). And the completely innocent other dude, I felt so bad for, because you could hear him get more and more desparate as my friend slowly turned away from me, and against him, despite having plenty of evidence I was the imposter (the progress bar is literally undeniable proof. I just kept changing the subject anytime that came up. I think the only time I addressed it, I dismissed it as "You know, the game is still buggy as hell"... I think I slowly convinced her that the evidence against me was literally just a bug).
Finally, we voted, and she voted him off... Then I won instantly, with zero kills, just votes, and the entire discord server laughed their @$$es off. She was actually kinda upset that I managed to talk her into that.
... I'll be honest, it gave me a ton of insight into the minds of the manipulative people I've dealt with in awful relationships. I could never wrap my head around their psyche before then, which was why I kept letting it happen to me... This game kinda exposed that people like that are above all else, self serving, dont really have a moral compass, and are willing to drop the truth the moment it serves them. Finally understanding what goals people like that have for others around them, and the nefarious ways they accomplish it, made me a lot more vigilant and able to spot that kind of behavior from further out. I stopped letting abusive people into my life so much after that... But what's terrifying to me is that, as much as I dont want to, I know if push came to shove, I could lie and gaslight my @$$ off to get access to things or get out of sticky situations. I dont like knowing Im even capable of that. It was like the low stakes of a video game exposed to me what I could really do if I wanted to.
