- We are big proponents of headbutts. They can be a huge asset physically and mentally in a fight.
But if you're drilling them wrong, you're going to wreck yourself. Make sure you aren't making these commonly seen mistakes.

I agree in principal with what the coach is saying here and is applicable for most self defense situation. However (I know), if you watch Lethwei fights, you'll see head butts from clinch quite often. What we do is pull the opponent in next to our head and either hit them from the side (the "corner" above my eye or the side of my head) or, if I have a good grip, I'll press the same spot of my head into the side of his head, which is very uncomfortable, causing my opponent to pull back and then, wham, I drive that corner into the side of his head. A high potential for knock out either way. Anyway, the coach here is right just thought I'd add my 5 cents.
I agree with what you’re saying, and we talked about using the “corner” depending on context. Also, we talked about applying pressure from a clinched grip as a means to create pain and even in some cases (Bulgarian headlock) to help facilitate a takedown.
I appreciate your input.
Solid video and explanation. Hope to train soon!
Hell yeah❤
This clinch headbutt shown here is not meant to be used stationary. Thats why it didnt work!
It is meant to pull an opponent who is stumbling back from multiple straight line attacks into your headbutt.
You can see examples of that in the Rapid Assault Tactics system (R.A.T.) by Paul Vunak
Any thoughts on the Shirt/Jacket grab for the head butt like we see in Combat Sambo? The head doesn't come down in the same way.
Agreed, it isn’t the same. It also doesn’t stabilize the head.
Great video thank you Ryan!
Of course! People do teach it wrong. Can't belive I didn't realize.
I think there might be more people showing it the wrong than the right way so you’re doing a real PSA here.
MOST videos I see are of someone exposing the hardest part of the head before head butting.
Great lessons learned over this weekend 🙏🏾
Is the other guy Woody Harrelson's son ? 😄
He’s a Bellator fighter; Dan Moret.
