      In English, hunger is both a noun and a transient verb. You can say "I am hungry", but also "I hunger" or "I have a hunger for...".
      In Dutch, "honger" is a noun. The adjective is "hongerig". So in Dutch you can say "Ik heb honger" or "Ik ben hongerig." and they both translate to "I am hungry" in English.

    Its contextual usage.
    In Dutch we still have “ ik ben hongerig” which literally translates to “I am hungry” but it’s used in a different setting. Like wanting to have a little snack. Or just a cute way to say you’re hungry.
    Whilst “Ik heb honger” (translates to I have hunger/ I have famine) is used before a meal. And the most common used.
    Interestingly enough;
    French: j(e) ‘ai faim -> I have hunger
    Italian: Ho fame -> (i) have hunger
    Spanish: Tenge hambre -> (I) have hunger
    Don’t worry everything is comprised into simple universal rules that apply to most languages. It’s just the execution that’s different from simpeler languages like American

    "Honger" is actually a noun, so you can have it. In the sentence "I am hungry" ("hungry" is an adjective - like: the hungry bear) would translate to "Ik ben hongerig".
    It is not just typical for the Dutch language, though: In English, you can for example HAVE the munchies - you can't see them either, same principle: the munchies would be a noun.

    Fun fact: it's derived from 'Ik heb het gevoel van honger.' (I feel hungry). Only we Dutch are so lazy in speech, we shortened it in the ages.
    Also 'I'm hungry'... Hungry is not a person, so it's the same gag backfiring.

    You can say I am hungry in some form: "ik ben hongerig". But it's a more rare expression than "ik heb honger".

    Spanish does this, too. "Tengo hambre" literally means "(I) have hunger." Another example of treating intangible things differently from English is in weather. In Spanish, you can say "Hace calor/frío," which literally means "(It) is making heat/cold." Language is funnty 😅.

    Let’s make it more complicated: in Dutch you have honger and trek. Both word mean the same thing But when someone is hungry(honger), the body signals that it needs food, for example by contracting the stomach. And cravings (trek) are about a feeling of pleasure caused by, for example, the water in your mouth.
