In 1957 I was in high school and used to go to the Lighthouse on Sun. afternoons. They had a section, to left of the band, for under 21's, where you sit all afternoon and order soft drinks. Stan Levy was one of the most powerful drummers I've ever heard. I wonder what happened to all the paintings on the walls? Very Daliesque with funny titles. In 1985 I got to play there. It was a great feeling to be on that stage where all my heroes had played.

I miss my old friend Howard Rumsey, he opened the door introducing me to a lot of the guys. Stan Levey was kind to me as long as I didn't bug him too much haha. We were both Aries, right handed playing left handed ride. What times!!

When I was a kid my Mom would take us to the beach on Sunday. When we walked past the Lighthouse the music would just suck me thru the door.

What great footage of the amazing drummer Stan Levey. Check out his left hand trigger thumb when he’s playing the ride cymbal.

I don't think Stan would mind me saying that I felt that he was very brave to do any kind of video because he had just had 7000 rads of radiation on his jaw, he's very funny, he said 8000 you turn into a toad and he didn't speak like he had before and he had to chew gum, It burned his saliva glands out. He was very strong among other things.

Angela, he must have been a powerful guy, that time years ago you snapped our pic when I put my arm around him and he pulled me over, I said hey you look good and are pretty solid man. He said Pete I still do my roadwork. Haha. He was awesome.

At age 60 (and living here on the East coast) I still attempt to get people to appreciate the Lighthouse albums. I never thought at this point in time i'd see any kind of feature like this, especially with Howard himself speaking (along with any of the members of that fantastic band of musicians). Oh to have been there and experience this club! If I ever make it to the area you can bet the first place i'll go is to the place where this club was, just to soak in the area, take some photos where this great jazz club was and give me even more a memory of the place where all this great music was (and even some of the albums recorded).
Thanks so much for this feature and for seeking out these folks who were on the scene back in it's heyday.

I'm too young to have been able to go to the lighthouse but in the 1970s every Sunday in the fall and spring they would have jazz at the pilgramige theatre (now the John anson ford theatre) in the afternoons I was able to see many of the guys who had played at the lighthouse in the 50s. Many of them played in the tonight show band and played the studios... but I remember Bob Cooper, the Candoli Brothers Frank Rossilino (he committed suicide) supersax, Louis Bellson the list goes on. It was free... some woman had left money in her will to pay the musicians scale and the venue made enough money off of concessions to pay for the rest....

Stan Levey and I made this video (This I Dig of You) for Charlie Shoemake (the vibe player) of the Bill Holman Orchestra - ua-cam.com/video/kFI_kn712aY/v-deo.html
It's very rough, we just "winged it". I didn't post it and the quality is a bit on the soft side but it's a good example of a studio recording session. The music was later featured on Charlie's "Strollin" CD. Also check out this one (Dizzy Atmosphere) ua-cam.com/video/_kj6aYjKb4o/v-deo.html
