I'm American and never even noticed the red cups in movies until foreigners pointed it out to me. It was just a cup we use. We bought them because they tend to be the better option compared to the other cups. They were sturdy and had indentations to measure alcohol for mixed drinks and shots.
It also keeps drunk guests from breaking your glasses. 😂
Used a red solo cup at parties, cookouts etc for as long as I can remember, way before the movies. Sturdy and the ridges are good for measuring for mixed drinks an best of all you can write your name on your cup!

The red Solo cup, paper plates and plastic utincels was made popular here in the US not because of movies but because they were a cheap and made cleanup after parties, BBQ's, picknicks, and Pot Lucks much easier. Before the Solo cup we use to use paper and waxed paper cups that just did not last as long as some of our celibrations can last from a few hours to a full day.
Toby Keith writing a song about them didn't hurt either.

I am 54 years old and can remember using them in the late 80s and early 90s for going to the beach and during the summer my mom would give you one with your name taped to it and you had to use that one cup all week long and if you broke it, lost it, of could no longer use it for some reason then you had to wash dishes all week.

Why bring glass to a picnic or have to wash twenty or more glasses after a party when you can toss a plastic cup into the bin... I am not even whether most families or college students have twenty glasses.... Maybe 8 or 12, few have twenty or more...

Clarification: Honoring our military is the least we can do for those who put their lives & mental health on the line for their country. It is not being "obsessed" to be aware of the large # of veterans who come home injured or with PTSD. I am lucky to have had a father who served in ww2 and came home. But he also had PTSD. & Americans know our veterans often sacrificed when they served. Love your channel. Very interesting!

@@jonathansanchez6136 Fake - came from Kelly whom Trump fired for incompetence. Democrats normally despise the military because few of them have the guts to serve. We always fare better under a Republican administration, at least my VA is usually better staffed. Currently it's 3-4 months to get an appointment and getting worse. It's always a relief to us soldiers when we dump the Dem.

I know. We always buy several gallons at a time, because we don't want to go back out to the store again a few hours later.

My mom and dad always complained because they'd buy a gallon and then when they needed it for dinner it was gone, lol. Milk was my go to drink as a kid.
We buy milk 2 gallons at a time.
I quit drinking milk a few years ago. I easily went thru a gallon a day. I would be at the checkout with 4 gallons, and the lady might comment, "Oh, you have a lot of milk
drinkers in your family"? I'd say no. Just me.Giving up milk was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I gave up milk, Mountian Dew and beer, and lost 75 lbs.
I only drink water and beer now. NO sodas. no caffine. Just water and beer.
The milk industry convinced our parents if they didn't pour milk down our throats with a funnel we would get osteoporosis and our bones would become brittle

You do realize that you're going to need lots of calcium as you age due to bone density issues, not to mention a host of other issues? Theres nothing wrong with drinking milk. I lost 80LBS a few years ago and i still drink milk.
Red solo cups are sold everywhere here and at a fair price. There availability at a moments notice and that they can be thrown out after is why we use them for parties.
In Chicago I was taxed four times for a bottle of wine: 1. state tax 2. local tax 3. cook county tax 4. state liquor tax. The $17 dollar price tag ended up being about 21-22 after the taxes at the checkout
Red solo cups have been the ultimate party cup for way longer than they’ve put them in movies. It’s all about convenience. Don’t have to do dishes. Also, the lines on the cups are actually measurements. Makes it easy to make mixed drinks.
And contribute to the world's environmental problems. Like all such disposables they should be banned.

@@From-North-Jersey 🤣🤣🤣 I'm 70 years old and grew up in postwar Britain where nothing was taken for granted and disposables didn't exist! Beer bottles and pop (soda to you) were returned to the shop and exchanged for a small deposit of a few pennies. Milk was delivered to the door in glass bottles which were washed and returned after use. Our only takeaway food was fish and chips wrapped in newspaper and very often our fresh fruit and veg were wrapped in newspaper as well. Our clothes were darned, mended, handed down. Our household rubbish was burnt on an open fire. And guess what? We have more rats and pests, including foxes, in towns and cities now than back then because of all the plastic and polystyrene waste produced by the too numerous fast food outlets. Don't preach to me.

I’m 26 and from Michigan and never once thought we used red solo cups because of the movies. It’s just normal to use them here for holiday parties or partying (drinking) cause they’re easy to clean up and if you drop them, they don’t shatter like glass. You can also write your name on them with sharpie if you need to. Would recommend
Typically they are used when doing things like tailgating where alcohol is not allowed. If you are not overtly advertising that you’re drinking from a beer bottle with a label on it, one might think it could just be apple juice and the police will leave you alone. So, there is a reason, it is not just a movie thing.

Walgreens is listed as a pharmacy. However, I worked in one of their larger stores (they have four sizes). We sold not only pharmaceuticals, but groceries, household paper products, household cleansers, pet supplies, toiletries, phone accessories, video and music tapes and discs, household items such as towels and washcloths, automotive supplies, small kitchen items such as can openers, blenders, toasters and such and even clothes and shoes. We also had a full photo shop, complete with items such as totebags and blankets with your photos on them. We referred to our store as a mini-Walmart. I was without a car for two years and was able to buy everything I needed except fresh meat and fruits.
Also, many of us in America use both Metric and Imperial.
We were taught both and use both pretty regularly.

@@lisadiane40 Yes we do. Nearly every speedometer in the US shows both km and miles, and some of the most popular school age sports are football and track events. Football fields are literally a field measured in imperial, surrounded by a track measured in metric. There are very few Americans who don't know the relationship between a meter and a yard. As far as volume is concerned, we all walk around with cups and bottles measured in both liters and ounces. I honestly think the fact that most Americans _know_ imperial and _understand_ metric, while the rest of the world is largely clueless as to American measurements is just another example of how flexible and adaptable the American mindset is.

I graduated in 2005 and I took POE/CAD for Sophomore, Junior and one semester of Senior year. Just because you didn't, doesn't mean many of us didn't.
Yes it is a big milk, it is a gallon of milk. For a household of a number of people though who use milk as a beverage, for their Cereal, and for cooking like when making a box of Mac and Cheese it doesn't take a long time to go through it.
When I was a kid (in the dinosaur days lol), my mother had 2 one gallon glass jugs that she would fill twice a week, right at the farm. There were four of us kids.
I’ve had the “calling ourselves Americans” discussion with friends from other parts of the Americas. The weak argument is we are all Americans. The reality is no one from any other parts of the Americas refer to themselves as Americans, only in this argument they do. We only do it because it’s in the name of our country and it’s easy to say. It’s not because we are arrogant or ignorant.

Some states don't have sales tax, but they have higher property taxes, so the government gets their money one way or another! My family loves watching your family!
States without sales tax have a higher price on goods built in that adds up to sales tax amounts. After tax here in VA, a cheeseburger from McD's is $1.05. In Delaware, its base price was $1.05 for the same thing.
Or very high state tax like Oregon.

most of our stuff is shipped in, wed like more home produced, but we are at mercy of environmentalists and federals blocking development.
oil revenues fund our state, and the people rightly reject taxes via vote every time the politicians try to foist them upon us because they cant control their own spending...

Love the parents and adore the kids. Both so well behaved and polite.
The red plastic Solo cups for parties are great. It allows the host to have a lot of people over and not worry about whether they have a enough glasses for everyone. it also makes cleanup easy since you simply throw them away rather than spending a lot of time doing dishes. If you are hosting an event where people may want to set their drink down, people can use a marker to write their names on the cups so you won't pick up someone else's drink by mistake.
We use them, paper plates and plastic silverware for all parties, when family is here for more than a day and during girl scout cookie season. There aren't enough hours in the day during those times to keep up on dishes.

I love the imperial system and wouldn’t trade it for anything. It makes measuring easy when you can just use body parts to estimate length. Some of the units are specific to certain applications, like the hand is only used to measure horses and the yard is mainly used in measuring fabric and talking about the distance to a target when shooting.
While on a vacation in mexico, i had a long drunk chat with a few canadians about the differences between america and canada. I dont remember too too much of it but from what i do remember, they were very surprised by the calmness of my family and i and also that our country is generally seen (from canada at least) as a melting pot of culture and people. It really gave me a new appreciation for the openness to new people here in america (even tho people attempt to portray america as uninviting and arrogant lmao)

If on the farenheight thermometer, water freezes at 32 and boils at 212 and on the centigrade thermometer, water freezes at 0 and boils at 100 , what happens when all those units of temperature measuremnt that are on the farenheight scale disappear when you use the centigrade scale with fewer increments? This is is what happens: You're not measuring on the centigrade scale when you lose all those increments! Do the math. Farenheight is more accurate of temperature changes because it uses more increments. The only reason most of the world uses centigrade is because it's easier for scientists to use in research and the governments of those countries imposed what science chose for the lives of everyday people...even though it's nit as accurate regarding the measurement of temperature changes that the human body feels.
Those aren't measurements, those are comparisons.
@@hortagent5687 You're describing precision, not accuracy. And precision is not baked into a unit system, it's something to do with measurement devices. For example, use a thermometer with 0.1 C marks and 1.0 F marks, and the celsius measurement will have more increments and be more precise.

Actually during the 80s, the Red Plastic Solo cups became popular because people wanted to get away from Styrofoam cups and they just became very cheap. So instead of risking getting your things broken at a party, you just bought a sleeve of Solo cups, a box of plastic utensils, and paper plates. They do come in other colors like Blue and Yellow, but Red is just the color most people choose so it’s the one color most available. But I remember them being a staple for years before I ever saw them on TV or in the movies.
As for the Metric System, we are taught it in school, or at least I was, but we just understand and feel more comfortable with the Imperial system. However, most mechanics have tools in both SAE & Metric, & most medical measurements are in metrics (cc, ml, kg, etc.). The Imperial system was widely spread by the Romans. A Mile for instance was introduced as the Mille Passus (1000 paces) with a pace being 5 feet so the Roman Mile was 5000 feet. The British changed it to 5280 ft (not sure why). A foot seems like an obvious measure, an inch is about the length of the last digit on ones fingers. The Romans divided the Foot into 12 inches. A yard is 3 feet or approximately the distance from the nose to the tip of the middle finger on an outstretched arm, and roughly 2 cubits (which no ones uses anymore). A gallon of water weighs 10 pounds. US gallons are made up of 4 quarts vs the Royal Gallon of 5 quarts. A Quart is 2 pints, a pint is 2 cups, roughly a tea cup, not coffee mug. (Actually my great grandma used a Tea cup to measure out her flour and sugar.)
Remember, for most of history, measurements were approximations, not exact. For most of us, we still think in approximations so being able to “eye” things comes in handy when measuring things out vs having to be precise. Most recipes in fact you can get by with approximations in measurements. That being said, we did attempt to convert to metrics in the 1970s but so many just were opposed to it and preferred our traditional way that we gave up trying to convert over.
I spent over 25yrs in the auto industry. Mechanics don't have both because they just love spending outlandish money on unnecessary tools. It's because parts on vehicles come from all over the the world, therefore, it is a necessity as both are required just to work on a single vehicle. They don't like it!
Which Cubit are you referring to? Because the people that designed the replica of Noah's Ark used the wrong Cubit so they built an ark that was only 435 ft long. In actuality it was the royal Egyptian Cubit that was used based upon the education that would have been received at the time and that actually makes Noah's Ark over 500 ft long. And what do you know when they found the ark it was precisely that long.
When my mom passed down a family recipe to me she showed me the original, measured in hand-fulls and pinches, and then we used one that her father's sisters had made using cups and teaspoons! These approximate measures still apply when your recipe calls for 'heaping' cups of flour! :)
Also, the moonshine that my grandparents made would blow straight through a styrofoam cup.
@@johnbratcher8398 Yeah, at first it was a massive headache(the SAE vs Metric switch), but it's been years since I've seen a new, late model vehicle with SAE fasteners or measurements, even on American vehicles. So much so, that when you do find the odd SAE bolt during a job, you actually double check, just to make sure.
Most vintage/antique car will still be predominantly SAE, but now that most are considered "Classic", owners that can afford really nice examples will usually have a specialty shop perform any maintenance/repair they might need.
I’m from the USA and there are other countries who refer to us as America. In fact, I remember a few times telling people I was from the US and they didn’t understand what I meant until I said America. Also we are called Americans because America is part of our name. Secondly, most people I know differentiate between a drugstore and a pharmacy. Mom and pop pharmacies don’t sell groceries. It’s the drugstore chains that do this and in those cases the pharmacy is a department of the drugstore that operates semi independently. The drugstore hours of operation aren’t the same as the pharmacy hours of operation. You can’t pay for pharmacy purchases in the drugstore but you can pay for drugstore purchases in the pharmacy. And when there is a pharmacy inside of a grocery store sometimes the pharmacy isn’t part of the same business as the grocery store just leasing the space.
When I tell people I'm American, there isn't a single one that is confused about where I live. 😁
Totally backwards that people outside the USA don’t refer to the country as America. Just the opposite, except in countries outside the USA in North and South America, particularly in Latin America, and somewhat in Canada, where the USA is more commonly referred to as United States or the U.S. ‘American’ is known to mean U.S. citizen, everywhere, though in North and South America, with the thought I’m mind that geographically it could apply to anyone living on those continents, but has come to be synonymous with US citizens, thus the Organization of American states which includes people and countries from both continents.
Besides, Canadian, Mexican, Guatamalan, all make sense. United States-ian? Naw.
🇨🇦Lived in US, but raised in Canada. I remember as a young teenager in Canada we had visitors from California. They had a 4 year old daughter. The 4 year old looked at my 6 year old sister and said rather arrogantly “You’re not an AMERICAN girl”. I chimed in quickly, “Yes she is, she’s a North American girl”. Anyway that saved the day, but if the little girl had said United States-ian …..’’American’ is about the only word that cuts it, and is understood by people everywhere to mean a U.S. citizen, but at that time using it as a continental term helped two little girls get along.
@@shirleyk7647 I have visited to/lived some in Latin America and their education system teaches that “America” is one continent versus we and some other countries consider North and South to be separate continents. They teach North, South, andCentral are regions of one continent. I mostly speak Spanish when I go there and the Spanish word for a citizen of the United States of America is estadounidense. So basically they choose to use the first part of our name, and we use the latter. But when I was in countries in Europe and Africa, most people referred to my country as America and to me as American. I’m skeptical the woman who made this video has actually been very many places. Also you don’t have to even be from this part of the world to be American because the USA has territories so for example people born in Guam are Americans by citizenship.
We measure food in ounces, pounds, cups (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full), fluid ounces.
So when I was growing up, and still to this day, most people I know who freely recite the pledge of allegiance do it out of gratitude to live in a country as rich and free as ours, not out of just blind loyalty or obligation.

I’m American and I agree, as long as it’s adults doing it. It wasn’t portrayed to me as optional when I did it in elementary school. It has the vibe, atleast to me, of some cult-like child indoctrination when done that way
@mattalley4330 I get why you'd say that, but if these things aren't taught until adulthood then the concept is never instilled. As adults we don't just randomly decide to take part in selfless patriotic things, the knowledge and habit of reminding ourselves to be grateful to live in a country with freedoms unlike any other starts when were young and we're learning the rest of the values that we carry through life. Just like kindness, consideration, cleverness, problem-solving and accountability, patriotism and gratitude are things to be taught while our brains are still eager to learn.
@@amberraedawntollenaar3513 that's the thing though, children aren't taught what a pledge is or what allegiance is before they actually pledge their allegiance. They should at least do that first. Also, there are plenty of other countries that have the same freedoms as the U.S., more even. Choice of who to see for Healthcare, free speech, commerce, and so on. You can always be thankful to not have been born in the middle east or in areas where food is scarce, or in Russia, China, North Korea and what not. So there's plenty to be thankful for. But freedom that is exclusive to the U.S. isn't one just because we aren't the most free. That's just something people say.

The appearance of red solo cups in so many American movie party scenes is a reflection of the American party lifestyle. We don't use them because they were in the movies, movies use them because they know we use them all the time.
I think he means they became popular in other countries because they see them in our movies, not that they became popular here due to movies. Since the red cups are used for every party or cookout, it's natural they'd make it into movies about every day american life.
I'm 52 and they tried TERRIBLY hard to convert us to metric when I was in elementary (primary) school. It was a nightmare. But, it was always funny watching friends drive down from Canada and wonder why everyone was driving so fast and honking at them on the roads. LOL. The outer ring on our speedometers is in MPH while theres is in KPH.
Speaking as a Brit, metric can go and screw itself. Lol
yeah, for a while there distances were in both miles and km on all interstate signs I saw. Didn't 'take' to the consternation of the rest of the world, which makes it less likely we'll change because 'Murica!
But the speed limit is the speed limit. Theirs is in Kilometers and ours in miles.
I was taught the metric system in school and told how superior it was. Since then I have lived life, mostly as a machinist with also a large amount of construction work. In a machine shop the measurements are in 1/1000ths of an inch or 10th of 1/1000 so it's all base 10 and very effective. When doing construction we use fractions where something 37 and 3/16ths inches when you need the middle you measure to 18 and 19/32. I also use the metric system when needed and it's not really a problem.
What's funny about the measurement system is that in the U.S. we use imperial consistently. In some European countries they'll switch back and forth. Especially to give a good indication of how large or far something is they'll use miles.
Yeah the medical costs here in the states are absolutely ridiculous. Some of my buddies just outright refuse to go to the doctors because they don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars just to be told they have the flu or something then be prescribed medication that’s costs hundreds as well

Well due to how much we spend on Healthcare, the US is also responsible for a majority of medical breakthroughs in the last 50yrs. We make all the discoveries for the rest of the world, then we can't afford to use it ourselves.

When I was in elementary school in the 80s, they sort of half heartedly taught us the metric system in preparation for the ever-imminent "big switch" (which obviously never happened lol)

Remember the baseball outfield fences would have both the Imperial and the Metric numbers posted...Pfffffftttt...Experts say Metric is more exact and cost effective too...
While the metric system of course makes significantly more logical sense on every level, it just doesn't matter if you don't grow up with it and have an intuition for how much the measurement means. I know how far a mile/yard/foot is intuitively, and although I know all the metric values I still need to convert them to imperial in my head to get a feel for how far/heavy/dense/hot something is, etc.
I was in 3rd grade when my state stopped making it a requirement to learn cursive. Metric is still used in science and other stem subjects, but many still dont understand it oddly

How old are you? They just stopped teaching cursive in my state a few years ago. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one lol. For us, learning cursing was a right of passage. It was like being let in on the adult secret language.
The “below minimum wage” subject they bring up is completely accurate. When I was a server, I made $2.13 per hour as base pay which we are told is strictly meant to pay taxes. My tips were my only source of income which we are also required to claim on our taxes.
I made $.50 per hr minimum wage at my very first job in 1969.
Although, of course, the employer has to guarantee that you get at least minimum wage after tips are included.

@yomommamack9069 THIS ISN'T 1969. This law needs to be eliminated or modified to today's minimum wage and make tips optional as they should be. If they were guaranteed minimum wage, the current law wouldn't be necessary.

I'm an American, too, and I agree. We use the Imperial system, but we do learn about the Metric system in high school and in college. I just rather use and stick with the imperial system because it makes more sense to me and it's easier to understand.
I just hate having to buy two sets of tools, I'd rather we just pick one and be done with it. Honestly, it doesn't matter to me what one we choose.

The pledge of allegiance is recited every morning in school and it's probably the reason that we are so proud of are country. When I see an American get a Gold metal at the Olympics and the flag and national anthem is played ,I really get emotional with pride! We do learn the metric system in school and I was told that we will be converting some day, but I don't think we will. I'm 54 and they still say the same thing to kids today. We do use cups and fractions there of as well as , teaspoons, and table spoons for measuring liquids. I'm sure Atlanta knows about this from the recipes.

We (US) are actually taught both imperial and metric systems. Which is used depends. The military and scientific communities by in large use metric and sometimes a blend. Private industry primarily uses imperial.
The red cup issue. I was recently sick and had to drink a lot of fluids. So much easier to toss the red cups than to use all my glasses and fill the dishwasher. It's just such a convenience. Not just for parties!
America is not the only country to have a national anthem. We're just the only country to get a lot of slack for it: Here are the countries who have a daily pledge: The Philippines, South Korea, Malaysia, India, Singapore, Turkey, and Jamaica. In fact Jamaica has one of the most beautiful pledges around:

I lived in India for 6 Years, Before every Movie in the Movie Theaters the Pledge is Played, and sometimes it would be played during the scheduled intermission as well.
When I grew up in NZ the National Anthem (God Save the Queen) was played at the beginning of every movie and event. Don’t know if that still happens, I have been gone a long time 🙂

The US military uses a lot of metric measurements. When I did the land nav course for the Army the benefits of having easy to calculate conversions was very apparent. And once you learned the system you could give map coordinates to within about 200 meters just by "calibrated eyeball"

In school, we are taught both Customary US measurements and metric. We also use liters when buying bottles of soft drinks and other items.
I had to use an ambulance once a few years ago my bill was about $700+. Also in my city in order to have a car you need to purchase a sticker every year to put on your windshield, its $100. It's only purpose is for taxes or doesn't give you any privileges, also there's one for our license plates. It only shows that you have done the registration for the year, as if your unique license plate number couldn't be input into a computer to tell if you've registered or not

Healthcare in the U.S. is crazy. HOWEVER, there are so many and varied reasons causing. Firstly, our population is huuuuuge compared to most others. (Most) Secondly, our freedoms actually cost so much. So many lawsuits to so many individuals and different companies. So very vary many people use the hospitals as there primary care physician. And you cant imagine the amount of people who either receive free emergency services or never pay. No one is ever refused health care at public hospitals. And if severe enough, private hospitals have to by law stabilize the patient before transferring to a public hospital. Hospitals and doctors pay an outrageous amount of money for their own insurance (malpractice for one) protecting them from going bankrupt and out of business. The U.S. is so incredibly regulated. It takes tons of money just to get a new prescription on the market. And adding to their costs, if we as citizens abuse that medication, we sue THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES for our ignorance, AND WIN! Most career type jobs provide insurance, some at a nominal cost, some pay completely. But if you want a menial minimum wage job to be your career move, don't expect much. Government red tape and regulations is insane. But the thing I want to address is the ambulance service. I'm 66 and have had MANY rides in an ambulance. As of yet I have not found one that doesn't accept insurance. I THINK in more major big cities this might be a thing, I really don't know. We call 911 and they send the ambulance service. I believe it's what you do with your life. Make wise decisions, get educated and learn a trade or other higher paying job and save your money for retirement. Of everyone I've known in my life, beyond mere acquaintances, I don't know anyone who has gone bankrupt from health care. Though it sometimes is difficult.

@@DavidDeelLoco, Most of the ambulance services have to work with YOUR insurance, or you get charged separately. This is typical in several states. Also, public hospitals DO refuse to treat people. They're not supposed to, as life is supposed to be more precious than money, but they still do. Or, if they do actually run you through the system, they don't "waste resources" on your treatment, so you might not wind up better off after leaving. There are also some doctors, especially if they are not partners with YOUR insurance company, who will bill you extra or not treat you. Then there is the double standard when it comes to gender and body autonomy. Don't get me started there. Summary: we have a loooong way to go with healthcare. I really hate to have to state that this is the case, but it is.

Travel insurance is one thing you're going to want to look into for your big trip here. Just in case someone gets sick or injured you'll want to be prepared. We do have great doctors and hospitals here but they can get expensive.
I don't know if the schools here teach the metric system any longer. I had to learn it in 4th or 5th grade because they had plans to change it back then.
My favorite drug store has a full pharmacy in the back and a wide variety of nonpharmaceutical items in the rest of the store, including limited food items.
I remember way back when I was in school, in the land before time, we had foreign students attending our college, and they were shocked that red Solo cups were real.
Actually, for the record, i did not drink until my 21st. Hilariously enough i was in a fraternity and what the movies dont show is they are often all about that BEING BROTHERS. We went to a party and some guy started ragging on me for not drinking and i think EVERY ONE of my brothers got up and in his face saying it was my choice. One of them was so pissed he nearly got in a fight with the guy. (To be fair JUST LIKE REAL SIBLINGS after they sat back down one of them turned to me and said, "'sides this way you're designated driver.")
Just to clear something up, it is legal for Americans to drink before 21. In some states they can drink at the age of 17, or if they are in the military. It is illegal to sale alcohol to someone under 21, or drink in public. If you are at home, it is legal in most states. In many there are other exceptions like you can drink at church as well. If you are in the military it is legal regardless of age.
We still use cups as well as ounces and pounds, especially in cooking. It’s funny too because each and every state has “cottage law” for making and selling foods from home and every single one has different rules. Georgia won’t let you make salsa and “can it” whereas Alabama next door does! We all have our own set of eccentricities to remember😅

Everyone I know who is in the service industry would rather make tips, then get a higher hourly wage. In fact, my sister was promoted to management when she was younger and after 6 months requested to go back to being a server since she made more with tips. I have a friend that makes more in 3 nights bartending then she does 5 days at her day job.
I know servers who make six figures. High end resort servers make a killing

We also use "cups" in the US when cooking/baking. A lot of recipes will say something along the lines of "add one half cup of" etc. But yes, we do use ounces and pounds for measuring weight/amount of something, such as meat. As a former long distance runner, I also know meters as that's what tracks are measured in. Kilometers are where I start getting slightly confused and having to do the math for a moment first, outside of knowing 5k is just a tad over 3.1 miles, the distance for cross country races.
A cup is 8 oz. We are still measuring in ounces.

As far as medical here's an example: My son, now 24, was born permanently disabled with multiple disabilities one of which is epilepsy. Takes multiple medications to keep from having bad seizures. Insurance is expensive, doesn't cover everything and have to fight to qualify. There are government helps but you have to "qualify" for them by being super low income or unable to work. It's crazy hard to keep him cared for.
As someone who surveyed and studied sacred geometry I can tell you that the imperial measuring system is crucial to understanding the creation and harmonics built into our geography and physiology as an all inclusive and pervasive archetype patterned upon every layer of existence. As above, so below.
American here, I use both systems. Personally, I use metric more (science nerd with hobbies), but my job and everyone I know uses imperial or "standard." lol - I'm usually the one converting units when necessary, or suggesting a 19-mm socket when 3/4 in is just a touch too big and is stripping something. I know most conversions by heart.
I’m 62 and I remember when I was in school we were told we would be moving to the metric system. I think we even were taught about it. It used to be that you’d see road signs that had both measurements. At some point those went away. As far as medical, I’d say most of my credit card debt is medical related. I think a lot of people either skip or stop healthcare because they are afraid of the cost and charges and payment can be confusing. Often you don’t get billed for months and you might get bills from several entities.
In the US, good health insurance is as essential as food, water and oxygen. You can't live without it.
Actually, the US healthcare system has been using metric measurements for many years. Everything is measured in the metric system from clinical healthcare treatment notations to medical supplies. I am retired now, but in my 43 years in healthcare, I don't remember anything being measured using the imperial system dealing with healthcare since I started in the 1970.
I'm in my 70s, and at some point remember teaching the metric system. The medical "system" in the US is among really the worst in the world, because there are so many people without it. When you go on Medicare, things all change for the better, but Medicare itself was stripped and I carry supplemental insurance.
Insurance Industry and medical suppliers are are all capitalists. I paid 6k a year for health insurance. when I needed an injection in my spine, the insurance company rejected the doctor's treatment and cancelled my injectiom. I had told the dr. I would pay out of pocket if there was any issue. They allowed the cancellation and dropped me as a patient because I was now considered a difficult patient. I spoke to the ins. co. and told them they were in breach of contract, then shut down communication immediately and shut down access to my records. Except, they kept sending me bills ... I still have no relief from spinal stenosis. i went to pay out of pocket with drs. and specialists, they required I do physical therapy, did that...still no injections into spine... went to neurologists ... tried a few meds ... ended up worse than i started. 12+K out of pocket ... circle jerk. My daughter broke her hip, got on medicaid immediately... Botched 3 surgeries!!! charged medicaid for all 3 - 60k+ per, and my daughter is still fucked up, needs another surgery. Couldn't change drs., no other competend dr. would follow the incompetent one. Years in a wheelchair ... makes you want to go and do bad things to some of these f*cking assholes.
My uncle had to take an ambulance ride from a racetrack just outside of town. About 15 miles (not far). $1500.
An overnight stay in the ER with a cat scan has costed my family (with a good insurance plan) $1000. It’s madness. Oh, and yeah, I’ve filed for bankruptcy due to medical bills.

Baking/ cooking we use cups.
Red solo cups we like because they are sturdy and people won’t break the glasses. We don’t use styrofoam because it gives cancer. Also the lines in the red solo cups measure your drink for you the low like is for shots, the middle is for wine, the top is for mixed drinks

Ask the Canadians why my sick grandmother chose to use her American pay-for health insurance rather than be treated in the country she was born in for free... Went to Canada to begin cancer treatment and immediately returned to pay for it in America

I used to be a residency coordinator. Interestingly many Canadians doctors chose to come to America to be trained too. I know that is a different thing than what you are saying but they told me it was normal for Canadians to come to America to be trained.
My friend's dad did that too. Came to America to pay for his treatment. He didn't want to wait the 9-12 months for treatment in Ontario letting the cancer grow.
Also, much of the data used in American healthcare costs are electived procedures. In many places with universal healthcare the govt can not only deny you a medical service, but they can actually ban you from getting treatment and paying for it.
Here in the US we actually use a mix of imperial and metric, just depends on what the item is. Like soft drinks come 10oz, 12oz cans, 20oz bottles, 1L, 2L and 3L bottles. So yeah, it's can be rather confusing here.
Another interesting thing about sales tax is that it can be different in certain areas of the same city.
For example, I live in Chicago, and my office is downtown. If I go out to lunch, or even grab a snack at a drug store, there’s an additional “tourism tax,” since there’s such a large tourist population downtown. That means I can buy the exact same meal 1 mile away, and it’ll be cheaper. It’s truly wild.

Our insurance systems is similar, but there is no regulation. The Main difference is that businesses typically pay half of your insurance. However, companies are not required to pay anything at all.
Also, most people take jobs with companies that offer health insurance as part of the compensation package.
I lived in New York in the 60s during the Viet Nam war. The soldier’s complaints were that they could go to war but not drink at 18. So they changed the law to 18. Drunk driving accidents soared, lots of kids got killed driving drunk. Eventually, they changed it back to 21.
The 18 vs 21 law is a first world problem. Personally, if it's lowed I don't really care. If it stays the same, well, same thing. I don't really care.

A state could still have their drinking age at 18, but they would lose federal highway funds.
"Happily" when I turned 18 in New Jersey, the drinking age was actually at 18 so I could drink then. Later, after I was passed 21, most states had changed to 21. So, I never dealt with that issue. However, I certainly understand the reasoning behind it.
I'm certainly not a workaholic. I do my 40 hours per week (just M-F, no weekends), and pass on overtime when it's offered. And I'm not one to worry about work outside of work. Once my shift ends, I'm done dealing with it until next shift.
Yes but other countries don't think working 40hour work weeks plus overtime with no paid holidays is normal. In the eyes of people in other countries, what you just described is being a workaholic. (From how I understand it. I've never been outside the US so I'm not speaking first hand)
I can't remember the last time I worked only 40 hours until a week. Being able to work is an honor, not an obligation. It's another example of how people justify being lazy.
I worked as a delivery driver for a gourmet pizzeria, and I lived off of tips. I earned more money on tips than most other blue-collar workers did in salary. So much so, that I only had to work 25 to 30 hours a week and made more money than most of my friends who worked 40 hrs a week. It was sweet.
In USA there's many stores that have pharmacies in the store, as well as electronic sections that sell cell phones and other handy devices such as computers, TVs, Video Game department, music CDs, Automotive Dept, Camping & Outdoor gear, Fabric & Sewing Dept, Toy Section, Groceries, Furniture Section, Kitchen Section, Hardware Dept... stores like Walmart, BiMart, Costco, Fred Meyers, and too many others to list here. Oh forgot to mention about the Gardening Section in stores, even the Gun & Rifle Dept. Even sell Safes. But even the smaller chain grocers some also have pharmacy and also Bank such as Wells Fargo. I shop at BiMart more than Walmart. Also household sections that carry paints, hand tools, different types of sealants, you name they have it. Many various Pharmacy Stores names vary depending where you at in USA; Walgreens, Sav-On, Rite Aid, CVS Pharmacy, Safeway, Albertsons... just about every small town has an Drug Store that sells more than just medicine stuff.
I’ve heard horror stories about public health too. A lady I knew waited 2 years for back surgery this was in Spain. An English lady waited 6 months after finding a lump in her breast before seeing anyone. Maybe some of us go broke but I wonder how many die because they can’t get in

That doesn't excuse the exorbitant price of medical care here. I once went to the ER b/c I was throwing up blood. They stuck me in a hallway (not even a private ER cubby), gave me a shot of morphine, x-rayed my stomach, and they had the nerve to charge over $15000.
I have an aunt and Uncle that live in Canada. They come to the US for healthcare, and pay in cash! They told me that they could wait up to six months to see a Dr.!

@@desertdawn540 It depends on where you are and how serious your condition is. I have friends whose infant daughter was suffering hundreds of seizures a day. It took seeing many specialists before a diagnosis was pinned down because her condition isn’t that common. My friends are not bankrupt from her medical care. Could they use some really cool wheelchair accessories like a sled? Sure, but their daughter gets the specialized care and therapies she needs as a now pre-teen and the whole family lives a good life because of socialized health care. They are not rich by any means, so without a socialized system to care for their daughter, she might not be here today.
Red cups don't break, and they are marked for different drinks. PLUS you can throw them away or recycle them too!

They might rip it off your neck or wrist. NYC is usually very nice people but like every big city there are pickpockets. I’m watching you on your UA-cam live stream, not live, that’s why it can’t stop adding stuff, but I’m going to quit now as it is 4:10am.
My family used the red solo cups from the 70's and we still use them now for cook outs, parties, holidays, etc . Now you can get solo cups in different colors also.
I was working 50 to 60 hours a week as a nurse well into my 60's until it wrecked my health and I was forced into retirement.
I worked 40 hours a week, minimum wage, in a billing department for a manufacturing company for about 10 years. The last 3 1/2 years of working there, I was made to work 60 hours a week. Nobody in the office was allowed any overtime except for me and 2 other ladies. I already had a chronic illness and my health was deteriorating. The final 6 months I worked there I was forbidden from working more than 40 hours a week by my doctor. The factory went on strike so the owner and controller decided that it would be a good idea for me to work in the factory with a push broom sweeping up lamp black. Lamp black is a black pigment made from soot to manufacture, in my case, rubber flooring and step treads for busses. It just so happened to be in the hottest part of summer. It was about 90 degrees farenheit outside and about 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the factory. They also felt that it would be a great idea to pair me with the company owner's personal secretary. After working 1 day I told the controller I simply couldn't do it and why. Here's the thing, his wife and my mom were best friends from high school. My brother and I played with their sons almost every evening in the summer. He knew my mom had a serious physical condition and I had inherited it from her. So, he couldn't get rid of me that way. An employee can't, by Federal Law, be fired due to illness. The next day I was back in the office. A couple of days later I was put on a mandatory vacation. While I was off, I was sent a certified letter through the mail stating that I was put on indefinite leave. I had added an extra 0 in a price and mailed it. Apparantly, the customer called and was fuming! I highly doubt that they were so angry that they had no other option than to fire me. They found a way while I was on "vacation". They included a copy of "my error?" I just so happened to see the controller while at the grocery store about a year later. Since I was working on the same site as the strike, State Law will not allow a nonunion employee Unemployment Benefits, I didn't get anything. He said he thought I would get benefits. I filed bankruptcy. My health never did recover and I'm now receiving Widows Benefits in my mid fifties.
I left my nice paying job as a GM when my eldest was going into high school. I didn't remember her ever being in middle school. I was very well compensated for my time, but I nevet saw my children. I make a lot less now, but I actually got to see my kids grow up. I was lucky if I worked less than 80hrs.
There are definitely over worked fields. It's very sad.
Hey there guys, American here, in terms of when you guys were talking about recipes we do use cups and teaspoons and tablespoons and stuff. Ounces is really only used here as fluid ounces for drinks and stuff, and pounds we just use to measure the weight of objects. I know I've never used ounces or pounds in a recipe but I suppose I don't speak for all of us. Anyways I really love these videos and y'alls reactions to our American ways, keep it up!
I’m late but wanted to tell you the deal with solo “red”cups. Those are our standard throw away cups. So it makes cleaning up after parties or get together s if you use cups that just go in the trash. Those are just the most durable and cheap option.
The Red Cup's primary brand is Solo. So we mostly call them Solo cups. Hollywood movie depictions of them come from reality and not the reverse. Also, the houseparty style you see in movies isn't super off from how a house party you might actually attend might look. Sure, the people aren't going to all look like movie stars, and the social interaction isn't slick and stylised, because it's not scripted. I have personally been to a number of them in my school days that were actually wilder than many of the ones in movies. But yes the huge houseparty with beer pong is a real thing and not a Hollywood creation.
I've been to many house parties in my younger days,a few had been cut short by the cops,one time I was at party the cops broke up and made a bunch of drunk teens leave.we all left in our cars drunk and no one got pulled over
Despite not getting paid an average wage, wait staff in the US make BANK off tips. They actually make more than they would if paid minimum wage. SO don't feel sorry for them, they're doing just fine.
As a metal fabricator I use Metric and "Standard" on a daily basis at work and convert one to the other on a regular basis as well. I have several tape measures I keep on and use because of this and it SO hard to find a good quality metric tape measure. Its easier to order them off the internet then to try to find one on a store.
In America we do cups as well it just depends on what we're measuring and there are some instances where we do use some metric. like for example people that use vaporizers instead of smoking cigarettes they use milliliters to determine how much nicotine is in their Eliquid and how much Eliquid is in their bottle just as a example.
You may already have comments on this, but what you refer to as ACC sounds similar to workers compensation in the US. If you get injured on the job you will have your medical expenses covered. But any medical expenses incurred outside of work are not covered and is what you saw in the video… illness, disease, accident not working,etc. PS. Love the channel and I’ll say, when I visited your country in 2013, I fell in love. It’s been my dream to go back but there’s always so much more of the world to see, and as you know, we don’t get that much vacation. Lol. Keep up the fun videos!
The red plastic cups, aka Red Solo Cups, are popular because they make clean up after any social gathering quick and easy. Plus, they're refillable. We're also taught both the Imperial system(the one we use) and the metric system in school.
As someone who has visited over 100 countries, I can personally attest that most people in other countries call the USA "America". In fact, I found they do it more often than Americans, who usually say "U.S.".
I regularly use both metric and imperial measurement systems since I work with both computers and vehicles. Our American made vehicle parts and fasteners are in the metric system

That’s interesting. Sounds more like how a locally owned pharmacy operates.
I grew up in the 50s with family members who had ongoing medical needs. Pharmacies were not conglomerates, just small buildings where a pharmacist sold prescription medications, asprins, and band-aids.
@@MKCarol-ms7lg I was born in 1954. Pharmacies during our childhood were as you described. It was weird to me when you got your prescription from Rite Aid/Walgreens/CVS/etc., you could also pick up a gallon of milk, a magazine, a bottle of alcohol, whatever.
Yes, tipping in the US is a very messed up practice. Servers are often paid only $2.50/hr or maybe $2.80/hr. They are expected to make up the difference for minimum wage for their state with tips. Some states require a minimum wage of only $7.25/hr because that's the Federal/National minimum requirement. If a server is unable to make up the difference with tips, the employer has to pay them enough, that pay period to make up the difference. This also means that since tips are reported, they are also taxed. It's really screw up.
About tipping servers...
Our servers make between $2 and $4 per hour before tips. Most wages here start at around $15 per hour. But a good server can make a killing from tips.
However, many restaurants share tips among the staff. So tips added to a credit card payment will be counted at the end of the shift or night, then distributed around everyone who worked that shift. Cash goes in your pocket. No one shares their cash tips.
My daughter is a bar tender, and makes about $1,000 every week just in tips. Otherwise, her wages are about $60 per day, if she doesn't get tips. Bar tenders make $15 per hour.
